We are up at 5 am packed and ready to go by 6:30.The ship has packed a breaqkfast for us and a young looking guide arrives promptly at the appointed hour. She does not speak much english but takes us on a tour of the Three gorges Dam anyway. This pam project is the largest construction project in the world and they are still building another power generating station to house another 14 generators as well as a ship elevator to lift container ships up to the river elevations. The things is huge and while hazy/foggy you could feel the power of the water flowing out of the sluice gates. We are deposited at the bus station in Yi Chang for the 5 hours bus ride to Wuhan. We slept a bit on the half empty bus but ... read more

Breakfast at 8 and the day begins.Actually we have already been on the balcony for a while. The Brit across from us is thrilled with the discovery of toast and we have a good laugh about his culinary find in this land of such delights.Ann settles in for what is later described as her bets manicure ever and i chat on deck with a couple from denmark. The river slips by and ships come and go.We enter the first gorge at about 10 and thoough it is a short one only 8 kms in length it is spectacular with towering peaks and sheer cliffs dropping down to the great river.Lots of pictures are taken and we all agree this is great. The next gorge is much longer, about 45 kms and we are comfortable settled on the foredeck watching ... read more

Morning came and the city sounds fill our cabin the air is heavy with humidity and we wander to breakfast after a very pleasant night sleep. The ship is filling up and is scheduled to sail at 9 but breakfast is served for those of us who boarded the night before. After breakfast Ann goes to the sun deck for Tai Chi instructed by Dr Liu who also soothes passengers with accupuncture (not a wise choice on a moving ship I think) as well as foot massages. The turnout is small but enthusiastic as the city and river come to life all around us. The river is alive and as busy a working river as one would every see i think with every description of vessel moving up and down.Whistles are the universal communication between vessels but we witness ... read more

Well bloggers we have surfaced.Actually we have been on the surface of the Yangzi river since I last wrote. Actually that isn't really right as the yang tzee was the colonial name and not in favour here any more the proper name is now the Chang Jiang, bot I am ahead of myself again. When I last wrote we had been waiting in the hotel in Xi'an.The plane took off at about 7:30 and a short pleasant flight deposited us in the city of Chongqing.Another friendly smiling face attached to a Speak sign greeted us at the airport.A very articulate young woman was there to greet us and along with the driver was certainly serving above and beyond as they had both waited out our flight delay in the airport waiting for our three hour delayed flight.Pangs ... read more

Well cyber hitch hickers we are safe and sound and back on the air at least for the moment.I am sitting in a hotel at the Xi'an airport. Our 4:30 flight has been delayed till 7:30 so they have given us a room and hence internet access. Interesting feature in the room the usual toiletries are here including comb and slippers but this one featres mens briefs and socks as well. Not sure of the cultural significance to that but can imagine a number of things from very acccomodating for travellers diahorrea to some afternoon delight with a concubine.Anyway I am not sick and married so won't need a change. Not likely to fit anyway. We left BOb'and Nadias yesterday and as we drove to the train station marvelled at the red sun shini9ng through the polution in Beijing. The ... read more

I forgot to tell you about last night's supper. We walked down the road to get some hot pot.,not far from workers stadium, and also not far from the embassy.Hot pot is really fondue in another land. The waitress had great patience and spoke to us in mandarin with pointing and understanding looks. She really didn't care that we could not understand and she was unphased that she could not understand us.She hung in and pointed and waved at pictures on the menu. The end result was an excellent meal with plates of thinly sliced beef and some vegetables, mushrooms, squid, vermicelli noodles, some wagon wheel like sliced vegetable (Lotus root) and sauces of unknown origin. The pots of broth are placed before each diner and the sterno lit to produce a satisfying bubbling cooking broth to slip the various delights into.Large beers ... read more

Well it is get away day here in beautiful Beijing. We have had breakfast and are going to head out to tackle some temples. The train is at 6 tonight so we won't be going too far into the city.I think another subway trip is in the cards for us.It will be interesting to see if the weekend/sunday makes a difference here in this world. The plan is to eat before we get on the train, not sure what to expect on the railway and we would rather face the unexpected with our bellies full. There is always the trade off however, with the obvious and only a matter of time need to use the facliities. I have not mentioned the bathrooms here but believe me dear readers there is much to talk about.I will spare you details and can ... read more

Saturday is here Bob and Nadia and Carlo are all free of responsibility and able to join us on the great adventure,The enbassy vehicle and driver have been conscripted/hired for out excursion to the Great Wall.Ann makes a quick cycle to the tailor to get her new jacket. It is lovely and everyone is pleased. After breakfast we load into the van and head off to the Wall. The drive is about an hour and a half.We have chosen to go to a place the guide books say is less of a tourist scene. Our driver is a little unclear near the end about the route but after a couple of passing opinions and the views of a group of navigators sitting around infront of a bar/restaurant we see signs for the Great wall and are back on track. The ... read more

Well hello again cyber adventurers,It seems the Blog site has been down but we are back on the air and have much to relate. When we last spoke we had just finished our travel arrangements. The tickets arrived today sometime while we were out.We are on the 18:27 train out of Beijing tomorrow for Xi'an.I am getting ahead of myself though.Yesterday after we left the travel agent we headed back to Bob and Nadia's but not before we stopped at a restaurant for lunch.I went back to the Peking duck and Ann had a combination plate of sorts called a meeting platter.Nice restaurant with business folk eating. Chinese is a strange language and sitting next to people talking you would swear at times that a knife fight is about to break out with the harsh gutteral sounds and ... read more

After a few days of walking around I've noticed a few unusual things about the gardens and I've come to the conclusion that annuals must be very inexpensive in China. Most everywhere you look, there are potted plants - intersections, along the main highways and boulevards. In Tiannamon Square there are huge installations involving thousands of plants - huge pots of crimson bougainvilla, pointsiettas, yellow crysanthemums and asperagus ferns. Inspite of the pollution, dust and sand (we're close to the Gobi desert) there are bursts of colour along the main inter-city highways. First they erect a wire structure with holes in it, then they add pots to every hole - voila, a wall of colour - gorgeous. next gardening report to come as we make ourselves south. A... read more
