Hey all, Welcome back after a short break. A lot has happened since my last entry, so here we go. I have been working 8 hours a week at the Instituto Boulanger. This is not enough to support me here still, but has been a good learning experience and provides a bit of money. The good news, is the Anglo is going to hire me. The bad news is we have to wait for my Visa to come, which takes 30 work days. Meaning I won't start work until around October 20th. The Anglo is a non-profit British language school that pays extremely well, and is located 2 blocks from my house. So, until the 20th I will be teaching at Boulanger and hopefully one other school. I will also be looking to give private lessons. ... read more

Hello again, Sorry about the delay on this post, I have been a bit busy. Well after three weeks here I have landed one job at a high school. The job pay is pretty low and the hours are few, but it is a start. The classes are only 4 students each so I hope they can really improve their English with such small class sizes. I have also been in contact with a non-profit English language group called The Anglo. The school pays a good wage and is flexible with hours, aside from that they are also located about 3 blocks from my house. The problem is that both the Mexican gov. and the Anglo have a lot of hoops to jump through to make it work. Let’s say I have gone through half of ... read more

Hey Guys, So after almost two weeks I am starting to get into the swing of things. The internet in my apartment is spochy so I have to go down to the common area to use it. My room is clean but a bit boring with the empty white walls. From my windo I have a view of mountains volcanoes and a skyscrpaer that is part of a mall. The tower itself seems to be empty and more just for show rather than actual purpose. I can now get to the center and back easily and know my way around decently. Life here is not as slow as it was in Chile. It is Mexico, but it is a large city (3 million) and for me it is taking some getting used to. I have leads ... read more

Hi Everyone, The travel blog is back! I just made it to Puebla and am started to get settled in. Thankfully my spanish is coming back very quickly. I made it after one bus to Chicago, a flight to Monterrey then to Mexico DF. In Mexico Fernanda came to get me at the airport and we then took a bus to Puebla where I found my new home. I have what is basically one room with bedroom and bath, and a wall dividing the two. It is very nice though. The city is pretty big and I am a bit intimidated still, hopefully that will change soon. Yesterday I went around and got to know the city ( a bit) and bought a few necessities. I haven't gotten sick yet and have been eating some great ... read more

South America » Chile » Antofagasta Region » Antofagasta December 12th 2008

Hello All, I am on the road right now but have a bit of time and found an internet cafe, so I will give you a quick udpate. We left Concepcion and have been heading north for about a week now. We went direct to santiago by night bus and the following morning hitched a ride to valparaiso. We had a full day in valparaiso and i have to say i liked it, except it was pretty dirty. Cool architecture and city planning though. The next day we took off too La serena. We arrived super late and didnt have time to see much except the japanese garden and plaza de armas. The next stop was supposed to be Copiapo but we got there and the hostals were expensive so we kept moving to Antafogasta. Here ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Chiloé Island December 6th 2008

Hello again! wow it has been a very long time since I have written you guys. I have been pretty swamped here finishing my classes and saying good bye. I am in concepcion again after a 5 day long adventure to the south, Chiloe and Bariloche in argentina. The trip was great and my new tent has been serving me well. Chiloe reminded me alot of Ireland, wet cold, cloudy and green. Argentina was another story, Hot. Bariloche was really touristy which I didnt like too much, but they did have some great chocolate and meat. At this point my traveling group and I have returned to Concepcion to change a couple of things in our packs before we start heading to the north of Chile and Machu Pichu! I have 30 days now to get ... read more

Hello again friends and fam! Everyone here is ecstatic for the Obama victory. I am sure things have been crazy there the past few weeks. I can tell you that from this part of the world there is just as much HOPE as we have in the US, if not more. There is a hope that there will fially be a change in the US international policies in regards to Latin America and the developing world in general. It was very interesting to see this election from out of the country. There is a lot of pottential for this presidency as well as expectations. In other news, our trip to the south was amazing. We took a three day boat ride from Puerto Montt to La Laguna San Rafael where there is a spectacular glacier! The ... read more

Hello again friends and family! Wow, I am not sure when the last time I wrote was but anyways here we go. We spent 3 days San Pedro de Atacama, in the North of Chile after Santiago and Vina del Mar. San Pedro is a major tourist oasis in Chile especially for adventurous Europeans. The town is tiny but is full of tourists. We did alot while we there including hikes in Valle de La Luna, y la muerte. We also got to see the worlds largest open pit copper mine, this was absolutely unreal. It made me a bit sad though to see what "progress" does to the world. The Chuiciqamata mine, is also fighting against an the indigenous groups in the area over water rights. The mine needs tons of water to produce the ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago September 30th 2008

Hola! This blog will be a bit shorter today since I am writing on the go. Today we went to the House of Pablo Neruda, in Isla negra *he had many houses9* The architecture there is something else. Everything is designed to look like a ship. We also went to Vina del Mar, and the beach. I am in Santiago right now awaiting a trip to the North. We are going to Valle de la Luna which is supposed to feel like you are on the moon. Classes in Conce have finally gotten rolling and I am learning a lot of Spanish as well as the politics here which are very interesting. We are also learning a lot in the area studies class. I have met many friends here in Chile and have been trying to ... read more

South America » Chile » Biobío » Chillan September 21st 2008

Hello Again! I have just returned to Conce from my week long adventure. The week started out very simple. We hopped on a bus saturday the 13th for Chillan, to snowboard, hike, and hopefully find some hot springs. We arrived in the City of Chillan a bit lost, but quickly found our bearings. We then began walking to the Escuela Mexico, which houses murals by David Alfaro Siqueiros. Unfortunately for us the murals are being restored which is going to take about a year. After this we went to the Feria de Chillan which is a huge market inlcuding artisans and fresh produce. I bought a scarf and some mittens for the snow in the Andes as well as a bag full of vegies and fruits YUM! We then found out that no buses ran from ... read more
