Oh, Ryan. Way to go on the tentacle face. But a few tentacles to the face is surely a reasonable price to pay for all the other, more positive adventures! (PS I loooooove Malaysian food; please eat some roti kanai for me!)
You made it though and beautiful pictures! You still made it though! Way to go! On a side note, I really believe I would hike more in Oregon if mountains included guides and porters... I always hike in other countries. I can\'t really imagine the looks you would get from other hikers if you had a porter here though. How unfortunate!
Ha! I was thinking that too! There are so many great hikes near Vancouver but out of reach for most tourists. On the other hand, it is much quieter for us :)
A friend calls this "Type 2 fun" - not fun at the time, but afterwards, you're glad you did it. (You are glad you did it, right?) Keep posting about your (mis)adventures!
Love it! Very true bit I've been around long enough that I can endure the bad times (usually) because I know I will look back fondly once it's over and the pain subsides.
Temples/Mosques Sounds like a good trip so far! While I thought Bali was nice, my favorite part of Indonesia was definitely Sulawesi! It's extremely easy to get WAY off the beaten path there and everyone was really friendly. Also, I understand what you mean about setting the bar high for temples. My first mosque visit was the Blue Mosque in Istanbul which has basically made every other subsequent mosque look...alright/fine/nice/ok...but not really Blue Mosque quality. I was about to say that someday I will get back to the middle east to find some more impressive ones, but while writing this, I just looked at a '40 best mosques around the world' website and there are actually several really amazing ones in SE Asia, just fyi :)
Brevity, schmevity Go long, Ryan. If you've got the time and the connectivity, write on. With a year to go, you'll hone your posts naturally without needing to add the stress of writerly thought to your travels. Besides, posts only feel long when people can't write. You're not one of those.
It’s a rare kind of courage to do what others only dream. The ones staying in the safety of their jobs and homes while adventure beckons are the ones who risk, not you. Wishing you a blessed trip, may this journey make you even better and wiser than you are now.
Helpful blogs! I think yours is the first I've found that goes from Cambodia up into Laos, which is what I'm planning later this year. Plus, you provide some helpful, honest details, so thank you for that! :)
Bangkok Ryan, you write so well, I feel as though I am right there with you among the throngs of sweaty tourists and the deep fried insects! I am so happy that you are writing this blog and that you are allowing us all to travel the world with you. It is very much appreciated! Safe travels. Cannot wait to hear of your next adventure!
