Day 8 We spent the morning driving round the stunning mountains where we are staying before heading to the fanzone to watch the England match …….. a big mistake on 2 counts , 1) there were more staff than ‘fans’ and b) we found out 20 mins before the game the started that they were showing the USA v Alg match, not ours!!!!! (even though the only fans there were English). We ended up following a police man who took us to a hotel/ bar that was showing the game and just made it before kick-off. And phew were got through the group ……… to play the Germans. I may put one of those free bets on us losing on penalties, then at least if it happens I will win some money. ... read more

Day 7 End of the Kruger for now - although it was hard to stop looking for things out of the corner of my eye as I drove back towards Polokwane to pick Peter up from the airport - he had been chatting to Mick McCarthy about the French & England camp’s respective problems on the way up apparently!!!! Saw Bafana Bafana put up a brave fight (which in reality was what most of the SA fans wanted/ hoped for) in a lively bar near the B&B. Then off to the Arg v Gre game. We both agreed we wanted Argentina to win- which was good as we ended up in the middle of a load of their fans - The game wasn’t much better than the Mex v Fra game (but we were in row ... read more

Day 6 More driving/ spotting etc and whilst enjoyable nothing too much to write (or I suppose blog) home about until making my way back to camp - as ever, I was running a bit late but saw a car stopped so I slowed, I looked out but couldn’t see anything and was just about to leave when a head popped up next to the road - it turns out that this was a hyena kennel ( I don’t know if that’s the right word but you know what I mean). And slowly more of the family appeared until this very young pup came out and started playing about. One of the adults then got curious and wanted a smell of the car. I could have stayed until it got dark but still had 15km to ... read more

Day 5 Up early again and saw loads more animals, including briefly a lion carrying a carcass behind a bush - but the highlight was in the afternoon when I booked myself in for a bush walk; fortunately I was the only one who had booked, so I got my own 3 hour walk in the bush with 2 rangers (with rifles). It was great to be out of the car and looking around and learning about the animals and they tracked some buffalo first on some cliffs, but then went round and ‘met’ them and got close enough to get the adrenalin pumping - before some bird flew up out of the grass and spooked them so they ran off - wooses ... read more

Day 4 Up at the crack of dawn - and it was worth it ……… within 5 mins going down the road, I saw a family of hyena’s presumably going home after a night’s hunting ……… then headed off the beaten track and had a ‘real’ encounter with a big bull elephant who told me in no uncertain terms that I had got too close!!!!! I have also been near a couple of other herds later in the morning and whilst I didn’t get to touch, it was a far more satisfying experience than yesterday. Seen a load of other stuff and am just about to have lunch in what has to be a challenger for the restaurant with the best view, as well as the panorama, there’s families of elephant and hippo. For once I ... read more

Day 3 Today was mainly a travel day - although the 2nd part of it was through the Kruger to my (pleasantly less cold) accommodation - although there cannot be many journeys that you see a couple of elephant, a few giraffe, a zebra and the back end of a lion, and the timing couldn’t have been better as I was listening to the Germany match on the radio and no sooner had I seen my 1st elephant then Germany missed a penalty. - happy days ;-) Settled down to watch the England game in the camp Boma - and wished I hadn’t bothered … but at least it wasn’t freezing!!!!! ... read more

Day 2 Off for an elephant experience and safari - it was based in a luxury golf and spa resort (with own airstrip!!!!) - I wonder what the R&A Rules say about having a Zebra on the fairway!!!!! The ‘Experience’ was getting up close and learning about half a dozen elephants - these would have been culled if not part of this park, but even so I had the nagging doubt that I was part of a circus. However, even my cynicism was blown away when the elephant was able to pick up 1 of 4 of our shoes and give it back to the correct person. Then it was an hours safari through the bush which was excellent - it seemed a lot more ‘real’ seeing giraffe/ zebra from the back of an elephant rather ... read more

Day 1 Anyway - flight was fine and had a nice day with Grace and Theo in J’burg. It was a Bank Holiday and we took the new Gautrain (the 1st high speed train in Africa no less) - that had been only open a couple days, to Sandton - a posh shopping area, where almost everyone was wearing gold and green in anticipation for Bafana Bafana’s match that evening. Then it was time to head North to somewhere called Rooiberg - what turned out to be a one street Afrikaner holiday resort. The owner of the pub that I found that was showing the game, even took me to my picture as they “didn’t get many foreigners in there” !!!!!! watching soccer was clearly a new experience to a lot of them and whilst most ... read more

Had an excellent hors d’oeuvre for my holiday watching the opening ceremony/ game down in Trafalgar Square …. An excellent atmosphere - although of course nothing like the real thing next week. There were even a fair few vuvuzalas - although fortunately I didn’t dream about being attacked by hornets!!!!!!!! Just about got over the hang-over when its time to do it all again for Eng-er-land.... read more
