I promise that your first glimpse of Monument Valley, which is situated on the border of Arizona and Utah will take your breath away. You could see why it became the setting for so many movie films. You could take hundreds of photographs of the area (and I probably did) but never capture what you see and feel when you arrive. It is such a magical place that is so hard to describe but hopefully you will get an idea by some of the photos in this blog. It is one of the world’s most recognised landscapes with beautiful red sandstone mesas, buttes and spire rock structures and outlined against a bright vivid blue sky just gorgeous. We were camping at Gouldings Campground nestled at the foot of towering sandstone cliffs. It was quite expensive for ... read more

On our way to Canyon de Chelly we stopped at a small store to do some shopping. We wanted some breakfast porridge but could not see any so asked the shop assistant who immediately looked blank before a glimmer of recognition and she asked, ‘do you mean Oatmeal’? - that is what they call it over here……. ‘Judith you will be quite impressed as Paul is now eating porridge with fresh fruit (blueberries) most days’,…………never thought that he would be converted, after all these years saying that he hated it…….. The shop assistant did locate the ‘oatmeal’ but it came complete with Maple Sugar and Brown Sugar, but we did select the low fat version and it was jolly nice! We continued on our journey stopping at the Hubbell Trading Post. HUBBELL TRADING POST The Trading ... read more

We arrived at a campground in Holbrook and were met by a very friendly chap who gave us lots of information on what to see and do in the area. As we settled in we were greeted by the two sisters and their husbands from Kansas that we had met in Williams and they came over to say hello. They had been speaking to the campground owner about us and our van and he said, ‘that’s funny an English couple had just arrived in such a van’…….. we are becoming ‘celebrities’ throughout the west…….. Holbrook was to be our base to see both the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert which we had wanted to visit since we were told by our Australian friends, Alan and Bronwyn that it was a beautiful place to visit. It was a short journey for us from Williams to Tusayan which is nestled into the Kaibab Forest just outside the national park's entrance. The town of Tusayan is the gateway from the South into the Grand Canyon but there are also entrances from the West and North. Tusayan is home to the Grand Canyon Airport, from which helicopter and airplane tours depart and we were hoping to book one of these later. The Visitor Centre is also situated here so we stopped on the way to our campsite and we were really glad that we did. We chatted to one of the guides called Jerry who told us that the fire was still raging in Sedona and had still not been contained by all the fire crews that had been drafted in to help - ... read more

We left Las Vegas, Nevada far behind us and stopped at Hoover Dam to view this amazing structure. The Dam is a concrete arch gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado on the border between the USA states of Arizona and Nevada. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated by President Franklin D Roosevelt himself. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives in the making. The dam was named after the 31st President of the United Staes, Herbert Hoover - nothing to do with the vacuum cleaner. We drove along the I-40 and in a short while we were in the State of Arizona, known for its varied landscape, national parks, desert climate and of ... read more

It was indeed a very long journey from Yosemite to Death Valley and we really thought that we would never arrive. We passed through long stretches of urbanised areas but also isolated farmlands and on the side of the road we noticed a sign which said ‘Speed Enforced by Aircraft’ - not sure how they operated this but we stayed with in the relevant limits. We wanted to get as near as possible to the Valley and then camp up so that we could enter early in the morning before it started to get too hot. Most people we had met advised us to do this not just for ourselves but also vehicles heat up quickly in the valley and we did not want any breakdowns. Our camper van hire company had warned us that we ... read more

We left our hotel on Union Square and got a taxi to Beach Road to collect our new ‘home sweet home’ for the next 57 days to travel around some of the Western National Parks. To hire our home we chose to use a company called Escape Campervans as their vans were not too big and therefore would allow us to get off the beaten track and into places unreachable in the larger Motorhomes or Recreational Vehicles (RV’s) as they are known and which are more popular than smaller vehicles. Our two person vehicle was a converted Dodge Van, resprayed and everyone one of the company’s small fleet was unique. They have been hand painted by local artists in an array of colourful designs and fitted out with everything we should need for our long two ... read more

Well it really was a very long flight but we had some wonderful views on the way and the pilot ‘put his foot down’ so we gained an hour, so in total it was just over 15 hours flying time. We actually flew over the North Pole and it was just amazing seeing it from the air - massive ice fields, icebergs and crevices everywhere it was like looking at a giant wedding cake with all the icing cracking. We then had really good views of the Canadian Rockies covered in snow - awesome. Coming into San Francisco we flew over the Golden Gate Bridge and again the views were great we were very fortunate indeed. We were determined to stay awake to try and get into the local time zone so finally put our heads ... read more

Well here we are again just about to start another long journey and feeling really excited about setting off again. We so enjoy departing for new countries and meeting ‘new’ friends along the way. Even after four years of ‘living out of suitcases’ we still love travelling but miss our family and ‘old’ friends but it is always good to catch up with them again when we can. PROBLEM LEAVING SOUTH AFRICA In our last blog we were just about to leave Cape Town, South Africa having enjoyed travelling around nine countries in three months but we unfortunately left the country on a very sour note! We were stopped at Passport Control as we had overstayed our Visa and we were told that we had to pay a fine. We had unintentionally overstayed the 90 day ... read more

Once again this is a very long blog so if you want to read it all please do so in small tranches with maybe a glass of wine or beer to keep you focused...... - it is our 100th blog since we started in September 2010 and will be the last one for a while though............... We left Lesotho and returned to South Africa travelling through the Great Karoo, a vast semi desert which covers most of central South Africa. The area is famous for sheep and ostrich farming industries and we passed many farms as we continued our journey. The Karoo's name is derived from the Khoisan word meaning ‘land of thirst’ and the original owners were the Khoisan as well as the San peoples. The Khoisan relied on sheep and cattle for their livelihood ... read more
