We left Bryce NP and we were going to travel direct to Zion NP but a few miles down the road we stopped at Red Canyon located in the heart of the Dixie National Forest. There are so many different scenic places to stop and this looked like a good one so we booked into a ‘walk in’ campsite and chose a nice spot. The campsite ‘host’ was a chap who lived in his own van with his little dog on site and he was friendly and even insisted on cleaning out our fire pit and barbecue straight away. Red Canyon Red Canyon is located in an extremely picturesque valley with brilliant red soil contrasted beautifully with the dark green pines. As you enter the area through a tunnel carved through the rocks spectacular red sandstone ... read more

It was a long days drive to Bryce National Parkbut some stunning scenery on the way made the journey pleasant. Bryce is the smallest of the Utah’s National Parks but its beauty is definitely not small. We had not booked a campsite and tried to get into North Campground within the National Park itself but just missed the last spot so continued back to Ruby Inn Campground just outside the park. We had to move three times to find a good spot as a lot of the spaces were really cramped with very large RVs taking up so much room. Some of these are even larger than a 60 seat coach and often they tow a smaller car which also needs a space. Many of the campgrounds are geared towards these and they drive straight into ... read more

On the way out of Yellowstone National Park we passed over the Continental Divide and stopped at Lewis and Moose Falls where we saw a large Marmot posing above the falls, basking in the wonderful sunshine. We stopped at Headwaters Flagg Ranch where we were hoping to do a short hike but as soon as we got out of the van we were surrounded by 'giant' mosquitoes and they were big........ Paul even got a nasty bite within a few seconds, so we dived back into the van and continued our journey. I have such a problem with these little pests and get really strong reactions when bitten - so they are best avoided………Paul usually does not get bitten so it was obviously a good thing to move on if they liked him they would definitely ... read more

I continue this blog with part two of our travels around Yellowstone National Park it is such a huge park that I have split it into two blogs. On our way back to our campsite at West Yellowstone which is actually in Montana whilst Yellowstone itself is in Wyoming we again came across a queue of traffic - but this time we managed to pull off the road and head down to the river where we got our fist glimpse of a huge Grizzly Bear. A few people were heading back to their cars as we arrived as they said it was such a long way off across the river that they could not see it - luckily with our new lens and Paul's binoculars we managed to see and get a distant shot. This large ... read more

What a tremendous scenic drive through Buffalo Bill State Park and into the East entrance of Yellowstone National Park and on the way we passed Cody Peak with an elevation of 10566 feet. As we drove along following the Shoshone River the hills all around were covered in lovely spring flowers in golden yellows and cobalt blues with towering mountain and snowy peaks all around us - what a lovely vista. Five massive Big Horn Sheepthat were narrowly perched on the mountain edge suddenly came into our view but the road was so narrow we could not stop and a short while later we had arrived at the Sylvan Pass 8530 above sea level. We had so wanted to find these Big Horn Sheep and were fortunate to spot them as we drove along, but a ... read more

Blog 14 South Dakota & Wyoming - 8 to 12 June 2014 This is going to be a really long blog again as we seem to have done so much in such a short time but wanted to record it all but you need not read it all………. Our first stop in South Dakota was going to be the Mammoth Museum near Hot Springs but with the bad weather the ‘world and his dog’ had also decided it would be a good place to go and there was a large crowd so we decided to continue our journey instead. justify; font-size: 18px; line-height: normal; font-family: Chalkboard; mi... read more

North America » United States » Nebraska » Scottsbluff July 14th 2014

As we crossed the border into Nebraska we stopped at the Visitor Centre and chatted to Randy who worked part time whilst his wife was the local minister. The building was in the middle of nowhere but apparently used to be a chain burger-bar- not sure who ate there though as there did not seem to be any houses around for miles. It was different to most others VC we had been in, the layout was more like a ‘home’, including lounge sofas and lots of ornaments and memorabilia. We had coffee which was free and help yourself to what you want and we chatted to Randy for ages before heading off with a pile of brochures he insisted we would need about Nebraska and the area as well as some useful advice. We were following ... read more

We left Moab via the Colorado River Bridge and took the slightly longer scenic road along route 128 which was a spectacular drive following the Colorado River Gorge. For the first 13 miles we followed the river within a narrow section of the gorge, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding red sandstone cliffs rising majestically all around us. The gorge then widened as the highway proceeded past Castle and the Professor Valleys, which have been the shooting locations for many western films including Wagon Master and Rio Grande, along with numerous television commercials. A little further on and the highway passed a viewpoint for one of the grandest views in the west, the red rock spires of the Fisher Towers set against the snowy covered peaks of the La Sal Mountains. After leaving the valley, the ... read more

We left Mesa Verde and crossed back into Utah from Colorado - we were to cross in and out of many States during our travels. We passed mainly arable farms around the town of Monticello and before long arrived at our first Arch. Wilson Arch is easily visible from Highway 191 so we could not miss it. It is a natural sandstone arch with a span of 91 feet and a height of 46 feet. It was named after Joe Wilson a local pioneer who had a cabin nearby in Dry Valley. This was to be the first of many arches we would see over the next few days - such awesome vistas. A short while later we arrived in Moab which was to be our base to visit both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. We ... read more

We left Monument Valley, Utah early in the morning and detoured up country a little way to see the Mexican Hat - no not a restaurant but an inverted sandstone sombrero standing tall alongside the highway - the sun was in the wrong position but it was still easy to see why it was called the Mexican Hat…. We followed part of the ‘Trail of the Ancients’ the only national scenic byway dedicated to archaeology heading for the Four Corners Monument. This monument is the only place in the USA where four states intersect at one point. Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado - so we have now ‘set foot’ in a couple more States - see photo. The location is very remote but the landscape around is really good - so well worth the visit. ... read more
