Geo: -37.7593, 145.351Had a good lunch with the Donaldson's in Lilydale - "Round Birds Can't Fly" cafe. Highly rated on TripAdvisor but the menu was very limited. Saw a few more local sights then settled back home to continue our binge-watching of Season 1 of NYPD Blue. We'd forgotten how well written it was, and enjoyed Sipowicz's laconic style all over again.... read more

Geo: -37.5658, 145.526On Wednesday we drove up to Kinglake, via the St Leonard lookout near Toolangi. We were told that on a clear day Melbourne, and even Queenscliffe at the far end of Port Phillip Bay, are visible from the summit (with good binos).Kinglake suffered more greatly than even Marysdale in the Black Saturday fires - 120 deaths and 1,200 homes destroyed. On the way home we visited the Di Bortoli vineyard and enjoyed a generous $5 tasting plus a four-cheese plate. I don't mind paying for tasting - that way I don't feel guilty if I don't buy any bottles.... read more

Geo: -37.6515, 145.379We dropped the Frodshams at the airport, after another scrumptious meal at Laksa Kings. Then we drove to our home exchange house at Yarra Glen where we will stay until our return to Brisbane on Friday. On Monday we went for a drive to Healesville and then on to Marysville, the town that was ravaged by the 2009 "Black Saturday" bushfires. We saw lots of fire-blackened and dead trees. Although all the damaged buildings have been removed, Marysville has not recovered from the disaster and "For Sale" signs are everywhere.Visited a number of vineries: Punt Road, Domaine Chandon (flash lunch), Oakridge, Napoleone (brewery and cider house), Meletos, Yering Station, etc. Tasted wines from $22 to $89 and reconfirmed my view that price is no predictor of my wine preference, even from the same vineyard. Geo: -37.8679, 144.975After picking up Stef and Angela from the airport on Wednesday, we took an interesting drive along Port Phillip Bay.We then had mandatory afternoon drinks and a nap. In the evening we had dinner with our Melbourne-based Duntroon classmates. Chris Godden organised the event and we had a great turn up with 19 diners.Thursday was shopping day. Frodj and I went for a walk then vegged out in the hotel. The girls enjoyed browsing and buying in the CBD.... read more
