real life, real trips
You write very well. I love your ironic style, it made me laugh. Very good. Thank you. Graciela, from Argentina.

Hey! Excellent blog. A very enjoyable read. I know what you mean about the hippies in Cusco. They dress in a way that they think is unique yet they are as common as muck. Like you said, they never gave me reason to not like them, they just got under my skin for no apparent reason other than their dress sense!

For once a really good Blog
Just found your blog by accident, and I thought its very good. So many travel blogs are written by people with absolutely no writing ability (mine included unfortunately) but the couple I read of your trip in Peru were really good. Have you ever thought of publishing them?

i like it
You made my laugh. It´s very funny the way you write. Congratulations.

lovely piece
Hey, I truly enjoyed this blog, err your conversation with Rosalinda. You are quite a storyteller, Richard. Keep them coming!

Yipes! Thank goodness I kept my reservations in Pensacola!
"Peru, our bus drivers drink, and no one lives to tell." The ad council has resisted my various suggestions to ease the transition to rural travel in Peru. I also suggested, "When you're dead you won't even remember the bus ride, Peru!" I'm all for that warm fuzzy 'let's better understand the world around us', but this? Dude, this is madness. I'm annoyed when the chocolate-mint is off the pillow at the hotel; if nothing else, I have learned that I will NEVER travel in Peru. That's what google-earth is for. I also like my backyard very much better now. Please keep strong, Lance has nothing on you. Let Armstrong take the bus and we'll see who's tough!

Doesn't sound good
Makes the bus ride from Monterrey to Zacateca sound like a ride in a limo. I obviously knew you made it since you wrote this but it was entertaining. Take care and call when you get back.

Having a good time!
Looks like you're having a good time (except for the sunburn, maybe a hat would help?). Sea Dogs at Rock Cats tonight, if nothing else comes up I'm there. FYI: I bought a new GPS so my old one is looking for a home. Stay out of trouble.

much healthiness
glad to hear you are keeping healthy. Your blog has been helping while away the nunerous hrs spent caring for my mum in hospital.

Your version: "During the afternoon, we watched the semifinal between Uruguay and the Dutch. At times, my internal bursts and discharges drowned out the sound of the vuvuzelas." My version: My uncontrollable sobs of fear, frustration and exhaustion culminated in the simple villagers ancient practice of tying me to a tree by the broad brook that floods in heavy downpours near the contaminated copper processing plant’s slurry pools serviced by the overloaded rubble trucks with questionable brakes resulting in a series of remonstrations in broken Spanish and some fragments of Dutch which "drowned out the sound of the vuvuzelas" and in that moment they say I broke free and spent several weeks in the alpine forests. But World Cup? Boy, THAT was great! See the difference? Little more imaginative? Seems very real for the armchair traveler though. Just try’in to help.

For all the "third-worldy-ness" of the place, if you wiped away the ugly is it beautiful? If these roads were Euro standard roads would the ride be 'world-class'? Are there scenic turn offs that don't blur into panicked screams of horror? So is it the geography that will forever define the people of the mountains? How big are these villages? Four miles square-ish? Does everything smell bad?

what the......
what a novel if not a little strange way to earn cash, but fair play to the crazy dude! Cheers RICH that's definately another thing to add to my list of "must see".

Congratulations on your first Front Page blog. :)

In Peru, they do the jobs Americans don't want, like receptionist at a hotel, waiter at a chicken store, stray dog groomer, and automotive thrill driver. What about pictures of the accommodations? A cross between Camp Minnetonka and Guantanamo?

This entry made me laugh, I think anyone who has travelled off the beaten path in Peru has had a similar bus story and yes it is a long way down, One of my similar experiences was made even more hazardous by the beery eyed driver who stank of booze, It sounds like you have a wee gem in Rosalinda, have a great trip if we run into each other perhaps we can share a lovely warm cristal

I have been in this bar in Miraflores and you sum it up, I love your prose, very natural, you are an observer

The beautiful women sound very good. Mr NC Firstbeer, how stupid do you have to be to get into that mood when you're not in your own den? Probably a multi-millionaire who just don't care. Nothing sounds "charming" more like a grey swiss cheese experience with the mold ripe a bit too strong presented on a 'chinette' floral paper plate. But it's your trip man, what do I know?

I had forgotten about it being winter! The taxi thing sounds very world2 and reassuring that simple phone call gets a clean safe ride. Infrastructure, water, electricity, ect, sounds like a key challenge for Lima residents, true?
