After our kayaking trip and 4 nights of very limited sleep and hard work actually staying pointing in the right direction in the canoe, (and also trying to keep my teeth) we decided to stay in a lodge. We where kindly dropped off by our Kayaking company at the National Park. The kayaking company Blazing Paddles comes highly recommended for the whanganui river. Fantastic service and we even got a cake at the end!!! (lucky i didnt loose my teeth on the branch!!) The weather was crap for a couple of days but we needed rest and our lodge had acess to a jacuzzi............ Well finally, after waiting a couple of days for the weather to clear and the winds to drop we had a window of opertunity to do the much spoken about Tongario crossing. ... read more

Finally we where on our way, the day before a group had set off, the river was still high and the flow was very quick, they had the misfortune off snapping a canoe and one of the group had to be airlifted to hospital with hypothermia..... what laid ahead was 142km of river with 4 planned camps along the way, our chosen method of transport was a canadian canoe. Once we had packed our belonings into water tight barrels, and secured them with our best possible grannie knots into the canoe, we slid into the relitively calm water. Our plan for the day was to paddle from Cherry grove to Poukaria campsite, a distance of around 36km. We set off around 10.30am and arrived at around 16.00pm, which was not bad going, but the truth is ... read more

Ilona>>>> we caught the bus from Te Awamutu to Taumarunui, We had the last 2 seats on the bus! lucky shot..! arriving 2 hours later we get picked up ( as arranged) by this lovely woman who owns the camping (together with her husband) we are staying at. we booked 2 nights and straight away we loved this camping, there were a certain atmosphere there. we got good friends with the owners, and they were helping us booking canoes and driving us to the supermarkets etc, again we are cursed with rain, drying our wash becomes a nightmare, and the canoe trip got delayed. due to heavy rain, the currents speed up al lot on the river. so we end up booking one more night in the camping, but this time we book a cabin, so ... read more

Ilona: we start walking down the boring road again with heavy bags and geeky walkingsticks. even though we discovered that walking is absolutly shit, its still way better then being around unfriendly bitter Bryce. Richard is the brave one hwo dares holding his thumb up in order to catch a lift, im trying to look cool and not bothered, car by car is speeding by on the little road, it feels like strolling down the auto bahn. and then it happends. a silver grey ford is stopping, we run towards the car and try to squeeze all gear and sticks and hats in. well in the car there is a brazilian woman closer to her 40, she introduced herself as Roberta and then we heard the tires screaming as she drove off with fresh meat for ... read more

So finally Richard dropped us off at the climbing centre, we were both excited and relieved, he would not accept payment, he would only require a postcard at some point on our trip! We got to "Bryces Rockclimbing cafe" which states on a sign outside " Run by climbers for climbers " thank god! we thought to ourselves, well that was until we met Bryce, what a tit! His cafe/shop is located in the middle of nowhere, yet he has every conceivable object available to mankind in his shop for climbing, that includes guide books for the UK, and equipment used for big wall climbing in Yosemite valley USA. Not that useful on a 30metre high crag in NZ. First he tried to sell us everything instead of hiring, which we had agreed via email, wanted ... read more

17th January Richard>>>>>>> We left the camp-site a little to late (9.30am) and started our walk southwards towards Wharapapa out door centre where we planned to rock climb for a couple of days. As soon as we set off the packs felt heavy, the sun was blazing, sending heat waves shimmering up from the long straight road ahead. To the left of us a dog jumped into a water filled trough to gain some respite from the searing heat. We walked and walked changing sides of the road when it was possible to gain shade, from the trees that lined the road. Cars passed us very quickly as the speed limit on this rural road is 100kph, which is surprising as the speed limit in Norway, on the motorway, is only 100kph! After about 2 hrs ... read more

So, Jamie kindly fed us to complete bursting point again!!! and dropped us of in Auckland centre for us to catch our pre booked coach to Cambridge, we went straight to the travel agent and double checked our departure time which the Chinese guy behind the counter confirmed as 12.51pm, so off we went to buy a few last minute things we needed and to eat some sushi before our 3hr bus trip. We returned to the pick up point where we met an angry little Hobbit lookalike, who informed us we had just missed our bus, it had left at 12.15 not 12.51 ARGH!!!! Angrily we decided to go to an internet cafe, print out our details and get our money back from the travel company....now let it be known that walking around with a ... read more

Upon leaving north land we dropped in to do a spot of wine tasting, not a good idea when tired and driving an extra large camper van around narrow NZ roads!!! our last night was spent back in auckland, again with jamie and kerry. Home made pizza was on the menu using thier fantastic flying bread machine. After servicing Jamies van as part payment for their great hospitality , we hit the night life of Orewa, drinking some sort of lemony type lager recommended by the Youngs, lovely stuff! Thanks again Jamie and Kerry we will keep in touch!... read more

Finally we jumped onto our flight, after checking in a full 9 hrs early! Due to the fact that we had to check out of the hotel and jump on a couple of trains to changi ( its quite easy, without 2 backpacks) Our first flight was to Brisbane, so while killing time walking around the airport we notice a suspicious looking bag near a stair well to an emergency exit. It consisted of a paper shopping bag and a handbag. We walked past about 3 times and then walked away wondering what we should do? In this day and age you cannot be sure. Eventually we went up to the information desk around the corner, it had 2 very silly looking people on it. hello Sir, can i help? yes, there is a strange ... read more
