So we are now in Aussie, due to everything that happend it is hard to set our brain back to holiday mode. Here on the outside everything is normal. our heads are still in earth quake survival mode. Every time we see an open shop, selling water we get surprised. We ended up staying in a knocking shop in the central of Melbourne, recommended by the airport information!. We got seperate dorms, sleeping in bunk beds, in 45 degrees heat, shared with 3 teenage strangers. The party and the noise was never ending. All we wanted was sleep and rest, we checked out after 2 nights, half dead. We had not slept, eaten or drank much water for the 4 days during and after the earth quake. We took a long walk to the next place ... read more

So we now had our car back and everything was packed up and thrown in the back seat. We headed off northwards hoping the train of destruction would be less. We where right to imagine that the cordon would be a little more organised as more and more roads where shut off as we tried to flee the disaster, the biggest problem seemed to be that roads where closed off randomly, with no direct detour set up. Some of the roads that where open where in worse condition than the roads that where closed. People where beginning to loose there temper with other folk, the city seemed to be going into meltdown. However some community spirit existed as some houses we passed had access to spring water and had signs outside, with the offer of free ... read more

We are in Melbourne now, safe in the city, surrounded by people who never where effected, we have had very limited sleep and i feel completely exhausted and very dirty. after the big shake we ran to take cover in a park. we took some notes threw these days. 22 Feb around 13,00 we have been in an earthquake! it was so horrible i just want to cry, me and Richard were in the store, mountain designs on Colombo street trying out climbing shoes. the hole store started shaking and shelves were falling over, the strong loud sound were over welding, the floor is moving, you loose your balance, you are flying all over the floor out of control, feeling seasick. we ran in to the dressing rooms to avoid things or the actual roof falling ... read more

We are now in Melbourne safe and well, the last week has been very difficult. it all started on the morning of february 22nd. We had a list of simple jobs to do that morning ranging from arranging busses for our Malaysia trip, to buying a climbing rope and climbing shoes. We drove the hire car from our hostel in Somner,(about 16km from the city) and parked in a multi-storey carpark on the junction of lichfield street and colombo street. We then walked down Colombo street and into one of the outdoor shops, called bivouac stores; for a qoute, we then went directly across the street in to another outdoor shop called mountain designs. We could not decide what climbing shoes to buy and we spent about 30 min in the back of the shop, suddenly ... read more

WE WRITTEN THIS 2 DAYS BEFORE THE CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE So after a long drive we arrived in Arthurs pass at 925 metres altitude, we parked in the Doc hut campsite and watched the heavy rain splash off the wind screen, it looked like our planned treks in the surrounding mountains would be a wash out!!!!! In the morning we awoke to the shrill of the Mountain parrots called Kea. There are warning signs about these little fellas everywhere as they are the bird equilivent to a young teenager that has just discovered strong cider (white lightning). They trash everything! biting car wheels, eating their way through tents, picking out window seals, and agrivating everybody in the tea shop!!! we want one! So after getting our hands on a map and asking the local people for ... read more

We have been camping (in the nissan) outside hokitika for 2 nights, yesterday we bought some meat and planned for a bbq. to late we discover (when the meat is already bought!) that one time use bbq doesnt exist in NZ, like anywhere!! aaaarrrggghhh!!! so plan B was frying the steaks in the lid of the gas stove, this is not to recommend,. we ate our plates in silence,, thinking the salad dressing was the highlight. we decide to go for a small walk, we followed a track called swimmers beach,, a half an hour bush walk and we arrived at the water, the beach was infact only the path leading into the water! ha ha, beach my arse..... we had a skinny dip in the brown water, feeling more dirty than before the bath! only ... read more

finally we arrived in Franz josepth Glacier region, the village itself is very small and dominated by businesses offering guiding up onto the glacier or to have a helicopter ride and land higher up on the glacier. This are all business offering the best expieriences money can buy. we parked the car, i chose to park the car on the only available parking that was on the opposite side of the road. I was immediatley told off by the police for parking facing the wrong way as it may confuse tourists as to which direction to drive????? We collected some info on the glacier and set off walking to it. Obviously carrying all the survival equipment listed on the info sheet. While we were walking through the bush (again) and then we set our eyes on ... read more

We drove from west point towards Able Tasman where we planned to do another not so "Great walk", sorry to sound a little dissapointed with this, but when we got to able Tasman our fears where realised again. Everywhere we would like to park for the night, or camp there is a great big sign, we have come to the conclusion that we have arrived in NZ 5 years to late, it shows that such a tourist boom, which NZ has had, has turned "wild NZ" into "tame lame NZ". its a shame. We will write a conclusion on our stay here in our final NZ blog. any way we checked out the great walk, and it would cost us a further $80 for hut passses on a coastal walk, then a further $100 dollars for ... read more

We arrived in Picton South island on the last ferry off the day so we had pre arranged a hostel in Picton. The ferry crossing was very rough but we where rewarded with some stunning views and a great sunset, we had earlier planned to do the Queen charlotte track the next day but opted not to due to the fact that we had seen most of Marlbrough sounds on the way in. Also the fact that it is another one way track that first you have to pay for a hut pass then you must arrange and pay a water taxi to pick you up from the other end, this is becoming the norm on the money making "great walks" we are growing tired of this and now avoid these over rated things at all ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wellington February 3rd 2011

So, after the mountain crossing, and delays with the weather etc we decided we should try a new tactic for south island. We boarded the bus from the national park and headed southwards to wellington, which was about a 5 hour bus ride with a change over in Bull, now bull is a little village where the word bull has to be used on everything, eg consta-bul, (for a police station. collecta-bull (for a antique shop), delecta-bull for a pie shop, you get the idea, but for us, up to now on north island, when looking through the guides and expectations we would use bull-sh@t as a guide for the tourist info and brochure signs..............we get the feeling now that every town is so desperate for tourism that it prints off a load of photo shopped ... read more
