What an opportunity to share Mom's "China World" with her kids as well have Wai Po at their side. Foot steps placed in Hangzhou to be repeated years later by another generation.

Nanjing Road is a pedestrian mall that Didi used to visit when she was a teenager. On the way out to Nanjing we saw a nice car...wow - Derek has seen a number of choice cars during our trip including an orange Lamborghini. But today it was a white Ferrari Spider. After running down the mall and a quick bite of lunch we went over to the Oriental Pearl. The top "Space Module" observation deck is at 350 meters...The last time we visted our experience was not great as we were sure we felt it swaying. This time was different and we enjoyed the time we had there and the kids did as well...the clear glass floor at 263 meters was a leap of faith!... read more

A quick train ride from Hangzhou (1.5hr) and we're in Shanghai. The view from the hotel was great. Later in the evening we met with family for dinner at Xiao Nan Guo. The meal and service was excellent. This restaurant is one of many owned by the same group and it has served Chinese President Jiang Zemin.... read more

The residence of Hu Xueyan in Hangzhou is an amazing place that is well preserved and seemingly well cared for as well. It was built around 1872 and is made of more stone than wood unlike the palaces or mansions we saw in Beijing. After we visited we found out that much of it was restored in 1999. Hu Xueyan was a businessman in banking, military goods, and finally herbal medicine. He opened a medicine shop on Hefang street in Hangzhou where we had dinner the day before. The back side of the residence had a cave in it that had hallways and rooms in it and was fun for the kids to explore. The wood work was just amazing and generally well maintained. This is definitely worth a visit.... read more

Ling Yin Temple was constructed in 326 AD and its Grand Hall of the Great Sage contains a 110ft buddha carved in 1956. Ling Yin has a number of buddha's carved in the hill side as well. Without the megaphones its a pretty and peaceful spot.... read more

After breakfast we met and we all jumped into three of the finest vessels Hangzhou's West Lake has to provide and we went for a ride around Lesser Yingzhou Isle and back. Quite a workout for the rowers. The sky was clearer today and it was a pleasant ride.... read more

Hefang street is full of tourist shops and places to eat. Didi used to shop here with her Grandmother when she was little. We met Didi's family here for our first dinner together. Fourteen of us from Guilin, Shanghai, Santa Monica, Irvine, and the Chicago area showed up...... read more

After another overnight train ride on a much nicer train we arrived in Hangzhou at 8AM local time Friday. We checked in, cleaned up, and headed out for a bit of walking. Unfortunately, it's hotter than normal here and most of us had long sleeves so we suffered a bit across the Su Causeway with its 6 bridges on the way to the pagoda. And, we've found that it's a tourist season so Hangzhou is busy...packed...with flags and megaphones and swarms of like-colored-clothed bodies (the "tourists"). The pagoda is wonderful. It was rebuilt in 2002 over the remains of the original which dated back to 975 AD. One of our favorite mis-translated signs we found in 2005 has been replaced with one that makes MUCH more sense in english...guess somebody spoke up.... read more

We ventured into a hutong during our last day in Beijing. A hutong is a old city alley with narrow streets and court yard homes. Didi and I had actually visited this part of Old Beijing in 2006 but did not go into the hutong. this time, we had the opportunity to visit with a home owner and enter their home (for a fee of course ). Along with the tour was a walk through the old city bell tower. The bell, and partner drum tower, were used to tell the city what time it was. In the morning, bell performances noted AM time and drums in PM. These date back to the 1200's and are just north of the Forbidden City which is 200 years younger. Finally, we saw Prince Gong's mansion from the 1700's. ... read more

Thanks to Anthony Bourdain, we stopped by the Beijing Noodle Loft for dinner. They sling out one long noodle for the whole bowl. Video does this more justice. Food was good, fun stop. Kids like it. This also gave Kent a chance to stomach some stomach (sheep).... read more

After a large lunch (post climbing) we stopped by the Birds Nest National Stadium. Strange enough it's been converted into a race track for cars somewhat larger than go carts (ROC: Race of Champions?) - perhaps temporary of course. Very cool place but a bit deceiving in size...seemed bigger during the Olympics last August. Tiffany got a nice souvenir which is a preserved piece of the infield grass collected after the games closed...... read more
