Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak April 23rd 2014

After the wedding, my friends and I moved from the traffic madness of Kuta to the only-slightly quieter, and perhaps posher area of Seminyak. Both areas still share the same long, wide beach on the western coast, but while Kuta is known perhaps for its lively nightclubs, bikini babes and dread-locked Beach Cowboys, Seminyak is the flashpacker or slightly more family-oriented area for those with more dollars (and rupiah) to spend. And while I'd checked out Seminyak my previous visit, I certainly hadn't engaged in the white water rafting that my friends and I did this time round. 2h+ of pretend paddling down a surprisingly fast-flowing river, and a couple of capsizes later, we somehow still managed to emerge more or less unscathed! Stayed at Ananda Resort.... read more

And so it almost comes a full circle. Some 23 months ago, on the fifth day of my Southeast Asian adventure, I crossed the straits from Eastern Java to Bali and arrived in Kuta. 23 months later, and nearing the end of my two year sojourn, I'm back again on the island paradise. Finishing off from the Visayas in Central Philippines, I took the flight back home for a quick week's break in Singapore, before heading back to beautiful Bali. This time though I came with a more defined agenda -- a good friend was getting married. While both bride and groom are from Singapore, they'd decided to hold the wedding reception in Bali. And who could blame them? If there were a more idyllic location within a few hours flight from Singapore, well I don't ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Negros » Bacolod April 1st 2014

After just two quick nights, it was time to bid farewell to wonderful Sugar Beach, and head back up northwards along the western coast of Negros Occidental. And it was another standing-room only jam-packed bus ride from Montilla to the provincial capital of Bacolod, which would also be my last new stop here in the Visayas. A medium-sized city that is a somewhat smaller version of Cebu, Bacolod doesn't offer many tourist attractions per se. But it is steeped in history, and it's difficult to understand the Visayas and the Negros island in particular without having a sense of the importance this coastal port city played during the island's sugar-producing hey-days. So I decided to pay a visit to tie up my entire journey here in Central Philippines. I spent just another quick two nights in ... read more

I guess I shouldn't have remarked that I hadn't taken much land transportation yet in the Visayas. Having made a somewhat last minute decision to make a long detour to a somewhat remote beach on the Southwestern coast of Negros, it was an exhausting 6h+ journey from Bais to my next destination, Sugar Beach, just a few kilometres north of the closest town of Sipalay. And when I say exhausting, I mean 2h standing-room alone Ceres bus ride (Bais-Kabankalan), 2x jeepney (Kabankalan-Inayauan-Montilla), tricycle ride (Montilla-Nauhang) and finally paddle boat ride across a tidal river to Sugar Beach, then 10 min hike with all my gear on the sandy beach-exhausting! Ok, I've taken longer and worse journeys before (the 16h train ride from Mandalay to Katha in Myanmar and 18h trans-Sumatran bus ride from Bukittingi to Parapet ... read more

Moving on from Dumaguete, I realised this was the first time this trip that I was making an inter-city journey on land! Cos prior to this I'd exclusively been island-hopping, first from Cebu, to Bohol, to Siquijor, and finally Negros (or Negros Oriental to be precise, the Eastern part). Anyway, my first inter-city journey on terra firma was a very short one, as I took a quick 1h bus ride north on the ubiquitous Ceres bus line towards the small town of Bais. I'd come with the intention of hopefully doing some whale and dolphin-watching, as well as to check out what is apparently a very picturesque sand bar just off the bay. Unfortunately, I arrived at the tourism information office only to be told that I was probably going to be the only independent tourist ... read more

And with some tinge of sadness, I said goodbye to the pretty beach of San Juan, Siquijor, and made the short 1h ferry ride to the Southeastern edge of the large Visayan island of Negros, where the university town of Dumaguete was my first port of call. Centred around Silliman University, Dumaguete certainly looks the part -- uniformed and youngish-looking students everywhere, with green, grassy fields and tree-lined boulevards in and around campus, flanked by cozy, stylish cafes. While the university itself seems neither particularly grand nor architecturally-impressive, it surely imparts a very collegial feel, and of course offers yet another variation of a typical Visayan city. Dumaguete serves up the additional bonus of a coastal promenade that overlooks the bangka-dotted sea, complete with evening-strolling locals and playing kids, thus offerring yet a glimpse into Negros ... read more

Leaving Tagbilaran and the Chocolate Hills and tarsiers of Bohol, it was a 3h+ ferry ride to the small island of Siquijor, southeast of the Negros. Immediately upon arrival at the port in Siquijor town, I was back in capital-preservation mode, refusing the waiting tricycle drivers offers to send me to touristy San Juan beach, for an exhorbitant (?) PHP200-250 (USD5-6) fee for the roughly 10km ride. Instead I thought I would skip the overpriced tricycle ride, plonk myself somewhere in town near the port, and subsequently figure out a cheaper way to get to San Juan beach. Guesthouse pickings were slim in town however, and I ended up in Das Traum which was essentially a homestay in a huge bungalow that had, however, obviously seen better days a long time ago. LP had said the ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Bohol » Tagbilaran March 22nd 2014

Moving on from Cebu, it was a 2h fastcraft to the neighbouring island of Bohol, where its capital Tagbilaran would be my staging area. Tagbilaran might as well be tricycle capital of all of Philippines, with its innumerous noisy critters scooting around what really isn't that big a town to begin with. I'm not quite sure why there seems to be a particularly high concentration of tricycles here, considering the population isn't that great, given the size of the island. But anyway, pretty much everyone who comes to Bohol has two things in mind -- the Chocolate Hills and tarsiers. The Chocolate Hills are a scattering of some 1200 regularly-shaped and roughly even height mounds in central Bohol, which were supposedly formed by the uplift of coral deposits and the action of rainwater and erosion, though ... read more

Leaving the heart of Isaan in Udon Thani, it was an extended 10h traffic-jammed bus ride back to the capital, for a quick couple of nights in transit, before I left the Land of Smiles. Yes, it was finally time to say goodbye to my second home country for a fourth time, and say hello to my destination that is the Philippines. I'd already been there last year of course, in the northern region of Luzon, with some fond memories of the spectacular rice terraces of the Cordilleras, and swimming with the whale sharks. This time, I'll be exploring the central Visayas islands, with the country's second largest city of Cebu being my first port-of-call. And after an inconveniently timed red-eye flight, with a 3h layover in Manila, I'd finally arrived. LP said that Cebu is ... read more

And so with my fresh new 14-day visa in hand, it was time to start heading back to the capital. But first not without a layover at my third stop in the this mini-Isaan adventure of mine. Just a short 1h bus ride away from the Mekhong, and I found myself in Udon Thani. Like Nong Khai, truth is this was in fact not exactly my first time in Udon. For my Laos trip seven years ago, I'd landed in Udon airport, but was bussed directly to the Friendship bridge. So yes I'd seen the airport, but that was pretty much it. This time though I had a little more time to spend exploring the place. Udon isn't a particularly popular destination for cultural buffs, though it is home to a sizeable population of retired Western ... read more
