Day 4 - Today has been a very quiet day indeed. We decided we had had enough of crossing the border to Singapore and just chill in Johor Bahru. We strolled out about midday and headed to a couple of shopping centres. Conveniently close together we visited Tesco and Jusco along with the myriad of specialty stores that you get in a modern shopping mall. I found a Starbucks Coffee Shop in the mall, and of course in Malaysia they provide free wi-fi internet access. In saying that, I did eventually find out that wi-fi is free in Singapore once you register with SG wireless, although you do need a mobile phone for them to SMS a password to you. After shopping we got a cab back to the hotel where we imbibed in some of ... read more

Today was an easy day. We went across to Singapore once again, although the almost 2 hours to cross the border and actually travel to the city is becoming a bit of a drag. The compensation is the fact that the hotel cost of $60 per night in Johor Bahru eases the pain a bit. We spent about 4 hours around Orchard Road and in a couple of shopping centres and had lunch at an Irish bar. I have to say the food was excellent and, for Singapore, reasonably priced. I really am surprised by the prices here, in a lot of cases astronomical. Gina and I had foot reflexology today and that certainly helped tired muscles and feet after walking so far in this concrete jungle. There is just so much to see and do ... read more

Day 2 Today we again crossed the causeway into Singapore, but this time much quicker as we were more prepared having pre-filled the immigration forms. Certainly speeds the process up considerably. We arranged to meet a taxi driver called Geoffrey at Kranji MRT and he took us into town and up to Mt Faber. This is the base station for the cable car over to Sentosa Island and there are some great views of the city and harbour from here. David bought us all a drink and I nearly fell of the chair when I saw the prices. About $S23 for a glass of French house wine, $S17 for a Tiger beer and even $S9 for a glass of coke. Did go down rather well as it has been quite warm and humid today. We then ... read more

This is the start of our grand vacation to Singapore and Malaysia. On Sunday we left from the Gold Coast (Coolangatta) for our Air Asia flight to Kuala Lumpur. Whilst the excitement was there, the reality of the situation proved slightly disappointing. Our aircraft was a new A330 and we expected it to be a great flight on a relatively new plane, however the seating had much to be desired. Even Gina, at 5'0"found the pitch of the seats to be too close but the main problem was the seats DO NOT RECLINE. The seat slides forward, with some effort but provides no comfort at all. On arrival in KL, we spent about 4 hours wandering around the LCCT until our flight to Johor Bahru. JB is on the Malaysian side of the border with Singapore. ... read more

15 days to go With only 15 days to go, it's now time to let everyone know our itinerary for the grand vacation. 17 May - depart Coolangatta on Air Asia for Kuala Lumpur LCCT. 18 May - arrive 4.05 a.m. hopefully on time to connect with our 8.15 AA flight to Johor Bahru. We arrive in Johor Bahru (JB) at 9.00 where we will be staying 4 nights at the Suria City Hotel. This will be our base for 4 days whilst we explore Singapore and Southern Malaysia. As we are free wheeling and will do whatever happens, we do plan on going to Singapore Zoo, the Singapore Flyer and possibly having high tea at Raffles (Amex are going to love me). And don't forget the food or the massage. 22 May - today ... read more

84 days to go. We have visited Malaysia twice in the last 18 months. Our first visit was in October 2007 and again in May/June 2008. On both occasions we went to Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur. Langkawi is a most beautiful island and although I have never been to Bali or Phuket, would imagine this is what those two places looked like 20 or 30 years ago. Nothing can prepare you for your first glimpse of the Petronas Twin Towers when you approach KL city centre. ... read more
