This is a post that should have probably written weeks ago. It is a post I have dreaded. How do I describe these experiences? What do I say? Do I have the right to tell this story? Do have the skill to tell it in it’s entirely? Where is the truth, would I recognized it? I have avoided this posting because it demands context, but not justification, simply context. I have postponed this posting for weeks in attempt to gain some of this context. But I am beginning to wonder if I have the ability to separate between the reality that my eyes see and perception that my prejudices distort. I am reminded of a quote from a book I have recently read on this trip: “…We have no choice but to see the world through ... read more

I have backpacked along the east coast of the US but have never seen sights as beautifully as I have this weekend. We climbed the Volacanos of Yepacapa , Acatenago, and Fuego. We begin the day in the foothills of Yepacapa in rural farmlands. We quickly ascend through a dense volcanic rainforest. It is a strange place to be, at this altitude there are no indigenous animals save a few scare birds. The forest grew untamed in the absence of animals. The lush coffee black earth lay fluffy across the jungle floor untrampled by paw nor hoof; unturned in the absence of burrowing. It even lacked that almost sweet smell of liter decay. A lush jungle that is completely silent. The forest echoed the deafening stoicism as it yearned in anticipation of life, inhabitation. Trees stood ... read more

This is my first week, truly my first entry to the blog done in the country of Guatemala. Planning truly is a fool’s errand. Almost all of my preconceptions of this country have been shattered and are currently littered among the cobblestone streets of Antigua Guatemala. Every now and again, I see one of these “plans” ephemerally blow by. I futilely chase after it like a bag in the wind only to allow it to slip from my grasp. There is no strategy to this country every movement is impulsive. I imagined I would come here and take a million photos and spend my evenings unwinding on my net book, updating this travel blog. I found that if you have time to take photos of or write about your amazing life that life probably not that ... read more

Hello world! Hello all, please follow my travel blog. I travel a lot and come home with a memory card full of pictures and fragments of memories. I am going to try to use this travel blog to record my upcoming adventures through Central America and actually do something with the gigs of pictures I accumulate. I will have a corresponding Flickr page linked and .rss fed to this blog also. I leave January 8th for Guatemala City for a month then move to Honduras and end it all in Nicaragua. I am still building this site so don’t expect much now but I will begin updating in January and will try to maintain a weekly updates with photos and entries. Please feel free to leave any comments. I may mention that i will be moving ... read more

I have been spending the better part of the last week milling through a myriad of items. How does one practically switch from a regular office life, shirt and tie 365 days a year to the living out of a 65L bag for 3 months. Normally I relish the idea. This is far different from my backpacking excursions. The clothing, so much clothing must be taken. In the mountains we grab synthetic polymers and wash as needed. Here I am required to meet with children, families, etc. and maintain a civil appearance with a weight restriction of 50 lbs. Ditch the cottons, increase the nylon and polyesters. I am constantly holding each item up and asking does this item’s function justify the weight of its transport. There are very few sacred cows, every item is subject ... read more
