I'll start with a brief about my Friday. I woke up early expecting to have a session in the morning. If I had one then I would need to leave my place around 9am. I decided to wake up at 8am and send some texts. I didn't get any replies so around 8:45 I decided to take a shower. Since I still heard nothing I figured I would just wait. Finally around 9:15 I got a reply from May (the leader) saying that she wants to have a meeting at MUBS about the swITch project. Since I was already awake I just got some breakfast and then headed to the university. I spent some time on the internet and around noon Roy showed up. We then sat there waiting for May. It's wasn't until about 1:45pm ... read more

Almost everyone here is taking an antimalarial that they have to take once a week. Thursday is my day. We jokingly say that today is Malaria Day when we have to take the pill just to remind ourselves and others. Then we try to put good images in our heads just incase we have weird dreams (one of the side effects of the pills). I think I had one strange one but that was when I was back in North America. So far I've been fine in Africa though. Today I had to finish up planning my session. I also showed Susie (my teammate on the project) so that she would know what was going on with the session. It was her first time going and my second time. We had planned to meet with everyone ... read more

I woke up having felt a bit of accomplishment which was nice. I still didn't enjoy the cold shower though. I wasn't sure what to do with my day since I didn't have any plans. I decided to do some laundry and catch up on my blog. Hopefully soon I will be all caught up. I spent most of the day in my room writing, then I would go to MUBS to use the internet then afterwards just go and watch some soccer. The good thing is is that since so many of the interns have irregular schedules there is always someone around to talk to or hang out with. As I was walking Blonde Tim (one of the Dutch Tims) invited me for dinner in one of the interns rooms. I looked into the room ... read more

Before this post I must make an apology. I don't know why but I had been writing the name Hector when I actually meant Herbert. I woke up early even though I didn't have to do anything for the day. It was once again loud in the hostel. Also I’m not always the most comfortable in my bed. I don’t have very much room under my mosquito net. My feet tend to hang over my bed. I’m in a mummy sleeping bag so I don’t have much room to move and I don’t have a pillow so I sleep on my sweatshirt. I still hadn't heard anything about my project so I figured I would do my laundry. I didn't have many dirty clothes but you have to wash them by hand so it takes a ... read more

So I woke up feeling fine in the morning. It was really the first night where I felt that I got some sleep. I then got ready to meet up with the group to go to the invitation. There was about 8 of us in our group and we first headed out to the Uganda Museum to learn a bit more about the Ugandan culture. It was a bit interesting to see the different instruments and tools that they have and used but I didn’t learn as much about the culture as I had expected. From there Hector said that we could only take 5 of us to the introduction so Katrina and Joanna decided to just head to the city center to go shopping. It was then just Thanasis (Greece), Lucy (China), Limbing (China), Iva ... read more

Once again I did not sleep well. I was hot and tossing and turning most of the night. It seemed that right before sunrise there was a nice breeze that came through the window and I was instantly able to sleep. That didn’t last long though because by 8am the hostel was loud and everyone was awake. I was extremely tired. It was now 3 nights in a row that I had gotten almost no sleep (first night being on the airplane). Regardless I still had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. I didn’t know if I was going to start my project or maybe switch rooms so I woke up to be prepared. I went down to take shower and miraculously there were shower curtains in almost every stall. It was still ... read more

I probably went to bed around 3am before waking up around 7 or 8am. It seems that people don’t sleep very much. I also was tossing and turning most of the night. It’s a bit strange sleeping under a mosquito net again as well as being in a sleeping bag. It was also pretty warm throughout the night so my sleeping bag was making me very hot. I was so tired yet I couldn’t sleep. I think I still had some jetlag as well (7 hours ahead of eastern time zone). It was very frustrating. It started to rain in the night and the temperature dropped a bit so towards the end of the night I was able to get some sleep but by the time I was in deep sleep people started waking up. I ... read more

I'm a couple days behind on this journal so I'll try to catch up as soon as I can. Also I experienced a lot in my first couple of days so my first entries will be a bit long. I will hopefully be posting photos as well. For those of you who don't know I am in Kampala, Uganda from June 17th until August 19th. I am working on a project through AIESEC called "swITch" where I am responsible for teaching high school students IT and then later evaluating their skills. The 16th of June I left for Uganda from Montreal. Viviane came with me to the airport which was very sweet of her and I'm very happy she did. Although you may not believe it, I was a bit nervous leaving for Uganda (thanks Mike). ... read more
