I got my hair cut and straightened this morning as curly hair doesn't work here. It just doesn't exist and I feel like an English sheep baking in the hot sun. I was able to understand the amount of money the hairdresser asked me for - 200 baht, about 4 pounds. I also navigated my way through the Bangkok sky train alone and I found my way to and from Susan's house at either end. I met four other tourists (a french couple and a moroccan couple who only spoke french) at Silom Taksim stop where the boat tours leave from. The five of us shared a boat which made it very cheap and we all got on well. The cruise took 1 hour and took us down the Chao Praya river (very quickly). The boat ... read more

I awoke to a very politically-charged event in Bangkok. At about 8am the prime minister dissolved parliament, and lots of protestors in Bangkok have gone into the centre to demonstrate against the prime minister and are continuing until she steps down and the regime is brought down. Susan took me on the sky train into Bangkok as we needed to get change some money at the bank. Lots of people aren't going to work as they have been encouraged by their bosses to demonstrate, the bars are empty and lots of streets are blocked off. Susan and I had lunch in a restaurant and watched the hundreds of protestors racing into the city on motorbikes and vans, waving the Thai flag or wearing the colours of the King. I cannot visit the centre of Bangkok at ... read more

Susan has made me feel really welcome right from the beginning. I went out with her two maids (one is thai, the other is Cambodian) and they took me to the local wat (temple) and the local market. I met the neighbours and attended a Buddhist ceremony with lots of singing and a monk sounding a gong at the front of the temple. I met Susan's 3 cats and 2 dogs and they have welcomed me into their home. Bangkok is very dry at the moment, it is the coldest month of the year and is the equivalent of Madrid's hottest month August. Am having to drink A LOT of water.... read more

Arrived into Bangkok airport at 9.30am. Once on the plane in Heathrow my flight was delayed by 45 minutes because of traffic problems in the UK. Once at Moscow airport (bleak and covered in inches of snow and -2 degrees) I had 10 minutes to make my connecting flight. Seven of us from my flight were chased through Moscow airport by some Russian shouting 'Bangkok hurry up, hurry up' We had to run over 2 kilometres to the other terminal. Having arrived at my flight sweaty and out of breath we were delayed another hour whilst Aeroflot decided to de-ice the plane. All in all it was a decent flight, decent and regular food, and met an interesting woman from Armenia who was interested in my Thai massage studies. Had no problems getting a taxi to ... read more
