South America » Argentina » Córdoba » Córdoba January 15th 2015

Today I’m very disorganised and as a result it wasn’t a very interesting or productive day. I got a map of the city, got up early and had planned to finally get to the gaucho festival which is one hour from here by bus. By the time I’d got organised and had breakfast it was already very hot outside so I decided to go and see the historic town instead and get to know the area a bit more. I saw lots of beautiful churches, statues, had a delicious, colourful mixed salad with beetroot, tomato, lettuce and carrot, and to even it out for tea I had a burger with fries, then a toffee ice cream. Apart from this there was nothing to write home about but after yesterday’s three interesting conversations on the 10 hour ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba January 14th 2015

I headed to the bus station straight after breakfast to buy my ticket to Cordoba. Thanks to the lovely staff in the hostel my trip to the bus station was a smooth and as I knew the bus times and the tickets that I wanted there were no problems. The only problem is that the bus station has a bad reputation for crime and as usual I was warned by locals to keep my eye on my bags all the time as it is common for thieves to use distraction techniques – often a thief sprays mustard or ketchup on a tourist and then helps to wipe it off whilst his or her accomplice grabs their bag. This wasn’t the first time I’d heard this advice. It is the tenth time I had been told about ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 13th 2015

I was all packed and ready to leave for Cordoba but in the morning there was a thunder storm. On the news I saw that all holidaymakers had been evacuated from the beach, somebody was trapped by a falling tree and parts of Buenos Aires were flooded. The weather was forecasted to be no better in Cordoba so I decided to hold off my travel plans for another day. I spent the morning thoroughly planning my last 2 weeks in Buenos Aires for the end of February and integrating it with trips to Montevideo in Uruguay and a weekend on a ranch, and using the hostel I’m staying in now as a base. Once the rain stopped I went out to change my money from US dollars to pesos after my unsuccessful attempt to get a ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 12th 2015

Today we had a news warning that there was a heat wave and that temperatures would stay at 38 degrees all afternoon in Buenos Aires. I had planned to go to Cordoba this morning but I didn’t want to travel in such conditions and I had some unfinished history lessons to attend in Buenos Aires before leaving it. The history lesson took on the form of a walking tour around the famous historical sites – the National Congress, the Palacio, Avenida de Mayo, the Evita mural, Cabildo and Plaza de Mayo. I got a quick glance at Peronismo, Argentina’s dictatorships, Argentina’s political history and the famous economic crisis. After Antonio’s (the hostel owner) thorough demonstration of how to test for fake peso bills and why the blue market exists I now felt confident at changing my ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 11th 2015

At 10.30am I went on a free walking tour around Buenos Aires lasting 4 hours mainly looking at the buildings. My plan for today was to get a quick tour of the main sights and then decide which ones to visit in more depth when I return to BA in February. Today felt like a real victory because I’d managed to walk and find my way from my hostel to the city centre and arrive more or lesson on time in the humid heat. I did the tour in Spanish with a local and was pleasantly surprised to find I could understand just about every detail about the Argentinian history and the only major obvious difference between Argentinian Spanish and Spanish from Spain to me was the pronunciation of ll as j, so they would say ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 10th 2015

My flight arrived into BA at around 9am local time. I successfully managed to get my baggage, change some currency at the Banco de la Nacion in the airport, have a cup of coffee and book an official taxi to my hostel. I arrived 2 hours early to my hostel and needed to wait until the room was ready. 15 minutes after I’d put my bags down I was ready to go exploring. I got talking to the owner of the hostel Antonio and he gave me a map and sent me on a tour at 3pm. Unfortunately with the heat, and the enormous size of the neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires I didn’t make the tour on time so I wondered around the neighbourhood and planned tomorrow. Recoleta, my neighbourhood is a safe one and the ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London January 28th 2014

At midnight I changed into my pyjamas hoping this simple act would encourage me to sleep well and then I boarded my flight to London from Kuala Lumpur. Despite having two seats to myself and trying every possible position to sleep in I barely slept at all during the 13 hour flight. I ate well though and I don't think I missed any opportunities for refreshments in the whole 13 hours :-) I arrived in London at 5.30am in the morning and headed straight for Costa Coffee. I was completely exhausted and disorientated despite drinking lots of coffee. Later in the morning I rang my Dad to let him know that I had arrived safely and I waited for my flight to Glasgow which left today at lunchtime. I kept having to walk around, making sure ... read more

Takashi drove me to the airport this morning after giving me a nice but strange breakfast. He baked something shaped like a fish but with jam in the middle, and boiled the kettle for my cup of tea on the gas stove. On the way there he showed me Mount Fuji which I missed every time when I was taking the bullet train usually because I fell asleep, the weather was too bad to see it or plain and simply I just didn't know where it was. Well why would I? There is no announcement on the bullet train to say 'Anna wake up Mount Fuji awaits you, get out of the train and climb it.' After a seven hour flight I arrived in Kuala Lumpur. I enjoyed the flight by making the most of my ... read more

After the bike ride yesterday I did very little. I finished my travelblog, updated my photos, went for short walks and finished my trip analysis. Every day I’ve been making a list of experiences from the beginning of my trip and I’ve always carried a pen and notepad with me. Today for my trip analysis I made a list of things I did well, things I’d do differently, most useful luggage items, things I enjoyed the most and why, things I disliked and why, habits I’d like to add to my routine for the next three years until I go on my next big trip, habits I want to follow now, hobbies to take up, a good list of things to do when I arrive in Leeds, things I’ve realised about my self and my relationships ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo January 25th 2014

This morning I had my breakfast in the hostel (tea and toast) whilst watching Japanese cartoons on the TV in Takashi’s living room. He’s 25 and speaks English really well as he has lived in New Zealand. When we watch TV together he tells me about what the Japanese are talking about on discussion programmes and even how cartoons reflect aspects of Japanese life. I’m learning a lot about Japanese culture this way, and whilst staying in his house I am following the ‘Japanese shoe tradition.’ I must take my shoes off when entering a house, put on a pair of slippers, then when I enter the bathroom I must take off my slippers and put on special bathroom shoes. Of all the Japanese ways, taking off my shoes before entering a house is my favourite. ... read more
