EVENING In the evening we headed down to the Feria de Alasitas. This happens once a year and consists of a square full of vendors selling hand-made miniatures of anything you might like a bigger version of, in the coming year. You can buy just about anything as each one of the hundreds of vendors specialises in a different thing. There is everything from farm animals and agriculture related things, shops, diplomas from all universities, driving licenses, passports, (frogs, elephants and buddhas all representing fortune), cars, all types of food, fruit and vegetables – anything you can’t afford now but you want to be able to afford within the next year. Once you buy the miniatures you put them together on a plate creating your vision of the future. The people then burn incense around it ... read more

We both had a nice breakfast in the hostel. As it was an open buffet I ate what I could, I had cereal, coffee with milk, a glass of orange, bread and butter, and a dish full of banana, papaya and melon. It was a good start to the day which I’d dedicated to catching up with some jobs so we could enjoy the rest of the trip around Bolivia following Ronald’s itinerary and using La Paz as a base.... read more

We went to visit the Asiento del Inca which was the seat used by the Incas during their ceremonies. We saw where the King and Queen sat, where the Incas would eat during the ceremony, where they would rest and where they would urinate down a channel in the rock. An unofficial guide came to show us the rock, explained the parts of the rock and how they were used during the ceremony, complete with demonstrations. He also asked Ronald to do some demonstrations but thankfully not the one of the Incas urinating down the rock. Of course, the unofficial guide wanted money for his explanations and I was more than happy to give him a few coins. His demonstration of the Incas lying down in the rock resting, was so funny. He was comical without ... read more

We left the church and went on to have breakfast in the local market with the local people. We had coffee with milk (fresh from the cow), bread and ‘queso fresco’ (fresh cheese made straight from the cows' milk that very day.) Ronald began telling me that Bolivians believe in Catholicism as well as paganism. For example, festivals such as ‘Carnaval’ are pagan festivals but they still celebrate the Catholic festivals that they do in Europe. In this way they integrate going to mass and Catholic ceremonies with earth worshipping rituals. We then looked around the shops and Ronald pointed out that they sell dehydrated, dead animals. Depending on your illness to get better you need to sacrifice a certain animal to the Gods by burning it. All Bolivians know which dehydrated animal they need to sacrifice ... read more

Both of us woke up with burned faces after spending yesterday on the Isla del Sol. I couldn’t believe it as there hadn’t been any sun and instead was very cloudy. I suppose because we were so high up the sun must have been so strong that it had burned us through the clouds. Ronald woke me up at 7.30am to see if I wanted to go to mass. I went with him because I didn’t want to offend his culture, I felt it would be a new experience and it meant we would get some breakfast quicker. We waited in the church for the priest to come but after half an hour he never came. It turns out that during the week he baptises cars but during the weekend he only baptises people and says ... read more

We were sold a Cruz Andina each - a piece of jewellery shaped in the form of a cross representing a sacred part of indigenous' people's history. The Andean Cross pre-Inca represented 13 months of the calendar year, and represented three important seasons. 21st March was the summer solstice, 21st June when the energy would enter the earth through the sun and 21stSeptember when the women would come and plant seeds in the ground and look after the earth. The 3 seasons were represented by the sky, the earth and the undergrowth? and these elements were represented by a condor (the sky), a puma (the earth) and a snake (the undergrowth) The Incas living on the Isla del Sol, every 6 months would sacrifice virgin women to the Madre Pachimana (God of the Earth) in order ... read more

We got on the boat to get to Isla de Sol which is located in the middle of Lake Titicaca. We sat down on the top deck with a bunch of 14 Argentinians from Buenos Aires who had come to Bolivia to dance caporalles, one of the dances danced in Carnaval . They were rowdy, laughing and joking and after an hour into the boat trip, they had finished two litres of some blue syrupy sweet cocktail. For the last half hour of the boat trip they were very drunk, all singing songs about the dance and waving bottles of cocktail in the air. Half way through the boat ride we got caught in a hail storm and it was really cold and windy, but fun. Once we arrived on the island Ronald and I, and ... read more

Ronald showed me how the walls were made of wood on all the fences up in the hill, then we headed back to the town and had a coffee, bought two tickets for the boat trip to the Isla de Sol and packed our bags with water, bread, mortadela and tostado de macarrones for the boat trip. Whilst we ate Saltenas (a pastry filled with juice, olives, carrots, eggs, potatoes and chicken) we watched the daily ritual of the baptism of cars. Everyday people of the town who have just bought new cars park their cars in a line outside the church, they decorate the cars in flowers, dress them up and bring lots of food and drink to celebrate the baptism of the car. The priest then comes out of the church with holy water ... read more

Ronald and I had breakfast in a place in the centre with the locals. We had a purple drink made of maze called Api, it is similar to sweet cereal but in a liquid form and bunuelo fried sweet dough, like a sweet pastry. We walked around town, visited the shield of Copacabana -each part of it representing geographical feature. We chased a bull as you do, climbed a big hill to find the Ahorca del Inca which consists of 3 rocks which the Incas put together to hang criminals from. On the way we up we passed the Observatorio Astronomico where the Incas would observe the universe from and finally after a very steep climb we found the Ahorca de Inca and from there we had an excellent view of Lake Titicaca and the Isla ... read more

Ronald and I took all my luggage up the hill to his Auntie’s house in Alto La Paz, at one of the highest points of the city. We headed up by Trufe and walked the rest of the way up into the clouds. We both packed little rucksacks with just the essential stuff and made our way to Copacabana. Before heading there, Ronald’s cousin, Franklin invited us to lunch in a restaurant where we had a four course meal - starter, then soup, then meat with potatoes and rice, and dessert – arroz con leche, rice pudding and apple juice. Here in Bolivia people eat enormous sized portions, but most of the food is home grown and there is a wide variety. If you want milk here you get it straight from the cow. The bus ... read more
