Off the beaten track in China

From: July 24th 2004
Until: September 4th 2004

For 6 weeks my mum, sister and I traveled by train, plane and automobile from the far NW desert to the lush mountains of the south. My sister had been working as a TELSOL teacher in Chongqing for the past 18 months and was using pages torn from a travel book as a guide. My mum, in her mid 70's, had studied Mandarin 20 years earlier (winning a scholarship in Beijing) and had wanted to catch up with friends and see more of China. She'd arrived a couple of months before me, practicing her language skills. Because we were backpacking, traveling rough, we traveled fairly light as we'd have to carry our bags quite a lot over rough ground.
