Geo: 52.3738, 4.89095there are some things i do when travelling alone to make sure i stay safe:-i rarely, if ever, go out at night-i don't drink-i certainly don't do drugsso my first evening in amsterdam i went out at DUSK and saw a sex show, and DIDN'T DRINK...then i went to a 'coffee shop' and DIDN'T DO DRUGS, i bought 'cake' and took it back to my hotel room and i ATE it...it was a safety success! (though the sex show was so UNsexy it was practically boring) i used vivien's famous words at the door and was granted easy access - have y'all heard the story? of me and viv in las vegas looking for a strip joint? i was drunk (but i wasn't alone so it was allowed) and happened to walk up to ... read more

Geo: 52.5235, 13.4115ich bin ein defective - who woulda thunk? went to sleep last night in the usual manner - dead tired, feet and knees throbbing from walking 5 to 7 hours a day...but i woke up unlike every other day, refreshed and ready to go, today my knee didn't want to move correctly...i couldn't properly straighten my left leg and putting weight on it was painful...oops! i did some creaky leg stretches in my room, then went to a chemist and got some heat cream...points to me for being able to communicate what i needed :) so with a bandaged knee under my jeans, and ready with my umbrella, scarf, thermal undershirt and rain jacket (did you get the subliminal message there about how cold it is?), i hit the streets of berlin once again ... read more

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205so here's something i didn't think i'd be saying - i didn't much like prague, and i've always wanted to come here :(visually, old prague is stunning...from churches to squares, and charles bridge to the prague castle, it's all really beautiful to take in...and at night with all the wonderful old buildings lit up, it's breathtakingbeyond that, it's all incredibly fake...old prague is the tourist centre and all you find is shop after shop of westernised restaurants, pubs advertising cheap beer, and cheesy souvenir shops...they even manage to make the bohemian crystal look gawdy (isn't it meant to be the best in the world?)the food is awful...they have a meat-based cuisine, like in Austria, but the quality of their meat is some of the worst i have ever encountered (beat only by Cambodia, a ... read more

Geo: 48.22, 16.37THEY DRINK WINE WITH SODA HERE....it's like they've been waiting for me to come all these years! I had a tour of Schonbrunn Palace which finished at 5.30, then I had to go back there for a concert at 8.30...I knew if I went back into town with the rest of the tour and back to my hotel I'd pass out, so I dumped the group (again) and stayed and had dinner for one...and what does one have on their first night in vienna? wiener schnitzel and apple strudel...I know I was just being a big stupid tourist, but I shall forever refer to it as 'the night I had dinner at the palace' coincidence: I did something a bit awesome without meaning to..the palace in Versailles is where Marie Antoinette lived (and died), ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice August 31st 2011

Geo: 45.4345, 12.3384VENEZIA! flamboyant, bourgeois city, all glitzy and very picture-postcard pretty - but a bit useless overall...i had the whole evening and morning free and pretty much saw everything there was to see before my afternoon city tour (slightly hindered by long lines at the post office)...but it was good in the end because the guide gave us info about how the city was built, and why some buildings lean, and what happens to the sewerage when high tide comes in and the city floods...venice is made up of 160 islands and 420 bridges, so every time you cross a bridge you are swapping islands...interesting stuffuuuhhh...she also said, with the aid of a map and everything, that the venetians had conquered greece...someone needs to (a) tell the greeks that, (b) google that shit and tell ... read more

Geo: 44.1034, 9.73389I LOVE FLORENCE...but we aren't talking about that yet because i still have 1 day hereCINQUE TERRE (the five lands) is where i went today...a short drive through the Tuscan country side and we found ourselves on the northern Italian Riviera (just a hop, skin 'n a jump from the French one)these 5 town are littered with colourful houses on the edges of cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea (the tour guide kept calling them ANCIENT and when i asked for a time period, he said 1100's...ancient? lol)...we started at the most southern one and walked/trecked/caught the train to all the resti left the tour group half way through the day and met up with them at the last town...there was no mistaking this tour as a hiking one because THAT'S WHAT IT WAS CALLED! ... read more

Europe » Greece August 27th 2011

Geo: 38.3642, 20.7185THENafter some small initial freaking out about being isolated and cut off from the world I settled into sloooooow village life and took in the views....and omg, what views they are...it boggles the mind that such serenity and beauty exists...there are more beaches on this island than there are towns the ionian sea is only surpassed in it's perfection by the weather...what the locals were calling insufferable heat I was pleasantly and easily soaking up...score 1 for the aussie we went sight-seeing, and i beached myself, and beached myself and beached myself...we also pressed grapes for wine (and by 'we' i mean 'not me'), and went to a panighiri (a town dance, a greek-style ho-down)...i also ate what might be the best tiropita evah!
