I am an out, gender-confused individual who is passionate about writing and photography (although my writing quality may suffer with jet-lag). I started this blog to keep my friends abreast of my adventures in Asia, my first visit and my first time flying alone. My destinations include Hong Kong, China, and India.

For better-quality photography, see facebook.com/PantheraPhoto. The photos here will for the most part not be edited as I usually do them.

So it’s been a long while since I posted, my apologies! I had to update a blog-ish type of thing for my internship (since it’s through a school program), so that was my priority for a while. And once you get behind it’s overwhelming to think about what to write to catch up! As you can tell by the title of this post, it is a T8 again! That means there’s a typhoon. The scale runs from T1 to T3 and then jumps to T8, outright typhoon. Everything shuts down and everyone goes home because windows blow out and AC units fall on people. So everyone goes home and has a T8 party with their neighbors and drinks -- it’s the equivalent of a snow day, but not just for kids! It’s not very windy where ... read more

Hello all! Happy 4thof July to those in the ol’ USofA. I already heard one house exploded in New Hampshire from fireworks indoors... stay safe! Today, like every day of this job, was pretty awesome. First I learned about photographing interiors and using the flash to assist with it. Usually I don’t use flash (actually, I NEVER do). To me it makes colors get washed out, casts sharp and obnoxious shadows, and generally just stinks. But with the magic of a couple diffusers, I saw what could be and it was really cool. Note to self: pick up some extra camera equipment in HK where it’s much cheaper. Note regarding note to self: I hope it’s cheaper here because while everything else seems to be, Nikon is a brand name and I would need Nikon parts ... read more

Today things were slow at work; I met my boss’s assistant and learned how to set up a backdrop properly. Then the assistant, Gigi, and I ran errands for the studio - getting necessary things like batteries and a new AC remote (part of my boss’s photography business is that as the owner he rents it out, so he needs to make sure everything is in working order. He says that if you own your own studio, it’ll be empty most of the time, so to make it pay off you should really rent it out). At lunch we found this really cute looking sandwich shop called La Baguette -- across the street from The Whiskey Priest (http://www.whiskeypriest.com.hk/). I MUST try both of these places!! Or at least The Whiskey Priest; La Baguette has delicious-sounding sandwiches ... read more

Yesterday my host family and I went to the races for the entire day. Sure, it was the 15thanniversary of the transfer of power back to China and there were celebrations and protests in Central, but it was also a great day for racing, and they had special events at the racetrack as well (in between EVERY race). These included presentations, salutes, a marching band, Cantonese singing, traditional dances, etc. I’ve never been to a racetrack (for animals) before. And here I was at an internationally renowned track owned by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (which is also Hong Kong’s largest charity organization, donating 85% of its profits to local communities for projects such as gyms, schools, hostels, etc). The stands and the track have a gorgeous view of mountains -- we were not at Happy ... read more

Today I learned how little I know. When helping out around the studio during my first day of work today, I fumbled a lot with the equipment (light stands and stuff). I just didn’t know how it worked. This stuff is so basic I was pretty embarrassed. But I got the hang of it and I know I’ll get better. My boss also seems really understanding, especially as he knows what king of educational background in photography I’m coming from: fine art printing, rather than commercial studio work. The genres are so different, and even when we did studio work at school our lights were all very different (and now that I know better, they were also all old and clumsy). So my boss is really happy to teach me what they aren’t teaching us at ... read more

Today, I woke up every couple of hours after midnight. Egad! Not sure if that means I’m still jet lagged or what. But I ended up going to breakfast early and staying awake until it was time to go meet my boss for the first time! My internship over here is with a high-quality fashion/product/commercial photographer through the first week of August or so. I have to complete at least 220 (unpaid) hours. Today was the day I was going to figure out my bus route and go see my boss. So today consisted of many firsts: 1.) I killed my first spider! It was in the bathroom, in the morning, with the toilet paper. 2.) I ate dragonfruit for the first time! It’s a very mild fruit with white flesh and lots of little black ... read more

Entry 1: Entry and Arrival Due to popular demand from my glorious raving fans, I have started this blog to keep everyone up to speed on my adventures. I left for Boston at 1:30 on Sunday for a flight that would leave at 6:45. At the airport, I was really nervous; everything had felt so distant for so long but here reality was sinking in right before I had to go through security. My mum and a good friend, Chris, brought me. While Chris nursed an enviable drink at The Legal Bar, Mum walked me to security and we said our good-byes... and I was a mess, a big embarrassing mess! I was scared and had been so close to my mum and now I had to leave. That feeling makes my eyes well up just ... read more
