It's wonderful to read a blog...
from someone who is not just passing through. Your details of day to day life bring back so many memories of my life in Thailand...and Bangkok. The picture of the watches at Pat Pong brought back a recent memory...I bought my son a Rolex...didn't last long. I really look forward to your future blogs of life in Bangkok and both day and longer duration trips.

Indeed it is the journey not the destination
Can't believe you are in Asia already...seems like you just did a blog from Mexico. Laughing at the Bangers and Mash....yes, plenty of time for Thai cooking. We will be following along on your new adventure.

Welcome to my hometown!
You are going to love Thailand. My blogs start there in 1949 (other than the first two about Labrang, China) where I was conceived...the Chinese say that is the start of life, so when writing about my life journeys it was only right to start there! Anyway, if you need any suggestions of where to travel in Thailand or Asia, let me know.

we love thailand...
...and will be following your thai travels with much interest!

Thanks!
We had been here for a couple of days, but it was on a tourist package. We're really looking forward to taking our time and checking out a lot of different, cool, yet cheap spots. Any suggestions?

Good plan...
I've enjoyed reading about you time in CA. After reading blogs by Dr. Jon, who spends his suumers teaching in various places around the world, I've come to believe that only his and your way of traveling really let's you know the country and people. You have to pay rent and utilities to get to know the bureaucracy that affet the everyday life of the people, and you have to be around awhile before neighbors will take you in. There is still room for the fast traveler who is looking for the place to come back to and spend some time.

PLANS?
A beautifully written evaluation of where your heads have been and are heading. So its back to Asia is it? If your Central American adventures are any indication, I'm sure you will do Asia with aplomb as well. Best wishes and enjoy your ride.

Sounds like you've made some decisions
A brief trip back to the U.S. pointed you in a new direction. Hopefully, you can touch base with a couple of the SF travel bloggers while you are back in the city. There are many travel bloggers you can meet along the way on your Asian travels.

Thanks!
We're going to be SO busy in NorCal with the banks, taxes, and storing the car, I don't think we're going to have time to grab a glass of wine! Nanci

Great road trip!
How great that you got to explore the small towns around the lake that were more like real Mexico! I visited Lake Chapala about 35 years ago, and even then it seemed more like my California hometown with its water, mountains, gorgeous bougainvillea, and lots of gringos. I wonder if this is the last you'll be speaking Spanish or if you'll be picking up more languages. Where will you be going....?

Cool pix - request info re Caldera
There are 7 of us and we don't plan to rent a car for many days. Per your journal, people take a bus from Boquete to Caldera for the mineral spring. Was it worth the trip? Were there other spots hotter than the one you mentioned? And do you think it is reasonable to take a bus and walk, given your knowledge of the area? We are going in January and really looking forward to this. If you have other tips for Boquete, please let me know. We are planning to visit Finca Lerida, the Quetzales trail, Finca Suiza (northeast of Boquete off the beaten path) for hiking, and possibly the Pianista trail (per our guide's suggestion.) We like to hike and want to see birds. Thanks so much, Cathy

The hot springs, to be honest, were pretty disappointing. While we were there several other groups arrived and I did not see anyone use them. It is run by totally local people and is not really very developed. I liked the idea of using local attractions, but this one wasn't very good. If you took a bus there, it is a very long way from where the bus drops you off (maybe 2 miles or more). Finca Lerida was nice, but kind of expensive. Pianista trail was OK but really not a very interesting trail after the first 1/2 mile and we didn't really see any birds that we couldn't have seen on the road. The quetzal trail was very nice but parts were closed when we went so you couldn't hike the entire route. If you like birds, Boquete is full of them (everywhere, literally) and you will see colors and types you have never seen before for sure. Enjoy your trip.
