January 28 Breakfast at Casa del Sol was nice. Our room was directly overlooking the river and in the morning we spotted a diving duck. We spent the rest of the morning in Aguas Calientes. It was a warm rainy morning. We wandered through the whole town up and down the narrow streets and through the market. The town is situated at the intersection of the Rio Agaus Calientes and Rio Vilcanota. The two rivers intersect at the center of town and the train track runs right along the Rio Vilcanota. We did little shopping. Pedro needed a snack so we stopped at a coffee/bakery shop and Pedro had a lemon meringue tart. We went back to Casa del Sol for check out and then walked across the tracks and then 3 minutes through the vendor ... read more

January 27th (Late posting as the internet was down at Machu Picchu) We got up early to climb Waynapicchu today. We had a very nice breakfast at the Sanctuary Lodge and as we were already at the gate we did not have to get up as early as most who are going to climb Waynapicchu. The morning was fairly cool and overcast. We were in the first group of 200 allowed to climb Waynapicchu at 7 a.m. Only 2 groups are allowed up per day and we had purchased our ticket when we were in Cusco. The lady that had arranged our train, park and bus tickets had gotten our Waynapicchu tickets online and she had said we got the last 2 openings for the tickets. At the gate you have to sign in, record the ... read more

January 26th We had good travels on the train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu station in Aguas Calientes. Lots of scenery. Cows on some terraces. We sat across from some young girls who took at least 32 selfies during the 1.5 hour ride. They felt bad for us that we were not taking selfies, so they took a picture of us as well. We took the bus up to Machu Picchu. We are not sure how many switchbacks on the way up the road, but we were happy to get to the top as the drop down off the cliff would not have been an acceptable ending. We checked into the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. Our room had a very nice view overlooking the mountains. We had a very nice lunch...finished with an assortment of treats ... read more

We have had another beautiful day. Our driver for the day was Julio. He picked us up and took us to Ollantaytambo. We got our ticket and then it was off to Moray. The weather was warm today, but there was a thunderstorm brewing in the distance across the valley. The thunder could be heard as we hiked around the terraces. Next it was off to the Salineras. The road to Salineras was a series of very narrow gravel roads with switchbacks. We were happy we were in a car with Julio driving rather than one of the larger vans or busses. We had a few drops of rain hit us when we were driving down to Salineras and also when we were walking around the pans, but otherwise we were not really hit by any ... read more

Spent the day touring with Eduardo our guide for the day. Our first stop was to see the Alpacas and learn about the culture and agriculture. We learned about the crops that are essential to the area including the potatoes, the corn, and quinoa. Next we went to Pisac Ruins. The Inca were masters of the terraces for agriculture. Their purpose was to manage irrigation and erosion. Crops were grown at different levels of elevation based on the crop to maximize yield. It was a long hike to the top. Eduardo was very informative. Next we went to Ollantaytambo. There we saw the Temple del Sol. The rock used was brought over 6 miles down from cliffs opposite to the build. The rock was brought across the river to the build area. The stone work was ... read more
