Starting our Thai experience in 10 days. Bangok, Koh Pha Ngan, Koh Samui and Phuket with various mini trips in between. Excited? You bet.

Not much to report for last day in Bangkok. Rob had massage with Thai ninja monkey with 6 knees, went to collect his handmade shirt which was 2 inches too short in the arm. Tantrum about to start when tailor realised he had given the wrong shirt to Rob. Rob very pleased with results. Moo sat by the pool, playing with her blisters and waiting to get ready for the train. Caught taxi to Hua Lamphong station, had political conversation about ex PM Thaksin in pigeon thai/english with driver whose roof was covered in photos of his family and dashboard covered in mini buddhas. At 5pm we boarded train, seats 5 and 6 in 2nd class dungeon, I mean carriage. Saw some interesting Thai life for the first couple of hours, including what appeared to be ... read more

Jaysus it's hot. Couldn't even sit by the pool. It's baking. Moo finally found some footwear that she could get on without screaming (bloody socks and bloody trainers, in this bloody heat). Got the Skytrain to the Chao Praya River over to the 'Buddha' area. Stopped over and wandered the grounds of the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha's temple. The temple was beautiful and no amount of photos (which will come soon, promise) can do it justice. It just sparkles and gleams and in some areas is amazingly intricate in design. Emerald Budda is only about 50 inches high and was originally encased in some kind of stucco until some poor monk dropped and chipped it only to discover it's more colourful side (happy monk after that I imagine). He's not emerald but I would say ... read more

Day 2: Woke far too early at 7.30a.m. Moo enjoyed cigarette and coffee at roof top pool whilst Rob faffed about getting ready for a very hearty breakfast (gratis of course). Moo not feeling very hungry (another miracle) so had 2 pieces of pineapple and more coffee. Trundled off to the Skytrain and underground stations to purchase Oyster card equivalents to get us about for a few days. We are only 100 yards from the link station at Asoke so perfect starting ground. Caught the subway to Hualumphong train station to purchase tickets for south Thailand bound train on Saturday. No first class seats left. Moo pissed off. Going 2nd class with just curtains for cover and smelly toilets. Rob's eyes lit up of course, loves that kind of thing. Seeing Moo with haughty/horrified look made ... read more

Day 1: (sorry this is late, we are now on day 3.....) Mood: Moo - slightly frayed, exhausted and raw eyed. Rob - suspicious and wide-eyed. Ailments: None (miracle) Arrived in Bangkok after a not too horrific 12 hour flight from Heathrow. Only exception being Moo's meal which consisted of boiled cabbage and some rice and dead flies (or something that looked and tasted like such). Wondered around the airport for half an hour trying to find 'real' taxi's that don't rip you off whilst being offered all sorts of 'special prices' and suit making (??). Humdity not as bad as expected although the Moo-hair frizzed within seconds. Had mental taxi driver who kept laughing at nothing, waving out of his window and (we're convinced0 drinking his own urine out of an old water bottle. Journey ... read more

Did I mention we were going on our jollies? Our primary reason for compiling this blog was for friends and family to keep up with us and to share our experiences, but of course we hope that fellow travellers enjoy our entries too. It's currently February 21st and there's snow on the ground in our hometown. In just over a week we'll be in the tropics. Excellent. We've been planning this trip for a few months now and have conducted a lot of research and changed our itinerary a dozen times. We've finally made the decision to stick to Bangkok, Samui, Koh Pha Ngan and Phuket with a few little off-shoots in between. Maybe we're a bit old and sad in making all these preps in advance and plans to follow the typical tourist trail but, ... read more
