Why we travel Enjoyed your bus ride and the thrill of the vistas opening at each corner. Gotta say I know what you mean. I'm not one to read a book while travelling if there is something to see out the window. I just can't do it. I don't want to miss what I could miss if I couldn't be bothered to look. The joy of traveling...if you are open to it...and friendly...it is a joy. That's why I travel!
Why we travel Thanks Dave. Isn't it great that nature can have such a positive effect on us! Happy to hear you can relate to these feelings, re-reading the blog flooded us with emotions but made us laugh at how bizzare it may read to someone who doesn't travel☺
Fabulous costumes, fabulous valley! How great that you trusted serendipity and went for a fine celebration--a perfect way to leave the country. I love that the community celebrates their black and white selves and puts such creativity and work into those costumes. That valley also looks so inviting--I imagine with more time, it would have been great walking on the ridge above it. Hope your border crossing was an easy one!
Re: Fabulous costumes, fabulous valley! Yes with more time, we probably would've ventured around and into the valley, the views were amazing. We loved the carnival vibes here, plus this one had a special positive and uniting message. And the costumes and colours were just amazing.
Re: WOW Thanks Dave. The colours here were so vibrant, even more so against the cloudy backdrop. You can only imagine the number of pictures we must've taken!!!
Happy Birthday, Chris! What a fantastic place to spend your special day! I'm always so impressed by how you find beautiful paradises and great activities. Those panoramas and the tower view are spectacular! I'd heard that Colombia is really crowded from Christmas on, and finding a place to stay is tricky, but it sounds as if this was a perfect place to be. Best wishes to both of your for a fabulous new year!
Re: Happy Birthday, Chris! Thank you Tara. Guatape was a beautiful place with some amazing scenery and a lot of fun too. Your right, certain places in Colombia can get filled up very quickly during special occasions - christmas, new year, religious festivals & carnivals (there's a lot of these) etc. Despite it being quite busy we were able to book our hostel a few days in advance. Guatape was a great mix of fun, activities and relaxation.
Re: Hold on!!! Haha fear not. You have not missed anything. Due to being a few months behind with our blogs we now use the date we posted the blog as opposed to the date we were actually in that destination. This is to give our blogs the best exposure possible. We have started putting the dates at the bottom of each blog to let our readers know when we were actually there.
Apologies for any confusion. Thanks for reading.
What!! where's that!! Damn, we were in Colombia and didn't even think of going there - I guess we need to go back. It is so interesting how you wrote about the lack of violence despite alcohol being sold on the street. We just kept saying "if they sold this much booze in Sydney there would be fights everywhere", such a different temperament.
Re: What!! where's that!! Guatape is highly recommended, such a beautiful place and only a few hours from Medellin. Yes the difference in culture is really noticeable with the street drinking. The UK is quite the same as Sydney and we're guessing Australia too in that fights are regular occurrence when mixed with drink.
Really like this photo This was a cool photo! I have a question for you. We have been thinking of going to Colombia but wonder a bit about the safety situation. Is there many parts of the country that are unsafe to visit?/Ake
Re: Really like this photo Thank you. Go Go Go is our answer to your question about Colombia. Colombia is very safe. We were there for 2 months and never had any trouble. There are areas that maybe deemed unsafe but tourists would never generally go there anyway. People are very friendly there. Big cities are the same all over the world, use the same caution as you would in London, Paris or New York etc.
Columbia You've really spent a good amount of time in Columbia and have gotten a rhythm to your travel. Sorry they backed out on Christmas dinner. I can't believe they did that at the last minute. The people sound wonderful and we are eager to go.
Re: Colombia We really did fall in love with Colombia, longest time in any country since we began our trip in Feb 2015. It was worth slowing down for. Yes christmas dinner plans were a bit of a shambles but we still enjoyed our day and the tasty meal we managed to knock up.
Re: Loved the blog! Thank you :) Medellin really is nice place to sight-see and socialise. We highly recommend going if you have the chance, we're sure you wont be disappointed.
Hi we're Chris and P. We have quit our jobs and sold our house to follow our dream of travelling around the world for 12 months!!!
Let’s jump back about 2 years - We're driving to P's friend’s house for an evening meal when she turns and says "I've been thinking..."
And what a thought that was indeed. That thought turned into buying a dilapidated property and spending a total of 2 years 'doing it up' ourselves coupled with a new job and a wedding thrown into the mix for good measure. We even questioned ourselves at times on whether travelling would actually become a reality or be j... full info
