This morning it was time to move on from Kuching and explore further into Borneo. Unfortunately the adventure was not as we expected. We were originally going to take the bus through the Malaysian province of Sarawalk to get to Brunei, but it was going to take 15 hours and we didn't really have the time to do that, so for $108 (for both of us) and the saving of a day of travelling, we flew on Air Asia to a town further down the coast of Borneo, called Miri. We were wanting to go from Miri to a place called Mulu National Park, which had some pretty cool caves and razor sharp rock formations that looked cool too. Unfortunately, we did not do enough planning in advance to realize that we couldn't do the park ... read more

This morning we finally got on our way to Bako National Park (pronounced Back-oh). Elysia's eye wasn't really feeling any better, but sitting in the hotel room wouldn't help it so we decided to go to the park anyways. Our guide picked us up at the hotel at 8:30 and took us to the boat dock at the edge of Bako. Although the park is connected to the mainland of Borneo, it is only accessible by boat. So, we took a small runabout type boat for a 15-minute ride through the South China Sea to the dock at Bako. At the park, we were greeted by wildlife immediately. The first thing we saw were Silver Langurs, a type of monkey, playing and eating in the trees near the beach. One of them had a very little ... read more

This morning we had planned to go to Bako National Park, but Elysia's eye was causing her more trouble so we decided to go to the hospital instead (fun fun). It was still extremely painful, sensitive to light and blurry. We just wanted to make sure that we knew what was going on and that there was no permanent damage being done to the eye. This time Elysia told the doctor what kind of medications that she wanted (she wanted dexamethasone to help clear up the inflammation), because it wasn't going away. At this point we were thinking that all the doctors were probably wrong and that it was likely a viral and not bacterial infection in her eye. But we were desperate to get her eye better so that she could see more of the ... read more

Today we woke up in Borneo for the first time. Borneo is an island that is made up of Malaysia in the North and Indonesia in the South. We were in the Malaysian part, in the province of Sarawak. It was difficult to decide where to go in Borneo when we were planning this trip, but the other Malaysian province, Sabah, is more mountainous and since we were just in Nepal, we thought that we should just do that on our next trip to Borneo. So we settled on flying from Singapore to Kuching, which is only an hour and a half flight. Having just arrived last night we made quick work of organizing activities for today. We decided that we would visit the orangutan rehabilitation facility near Kuching in the morning and do a river ... read more

This was our second day out on our own while Jemi worked (sorry need to finish blog from the first day still!). We started our morning off with a breakfast at Costa coffee, one of the coffee shops we frequented in London. This is one indication of influence that Britain has on Singapore, although it seems much less than their influence of Kuala Lumpur. After breakfast we were hemming and hawing about whether we should go shopping for a wide angle camera lens. It's not something that we had planned to buy, but we really wished we had one when we were in Nepal. So we thought we'd look at the price in Singapore because with the exchange rate and getting tax back for the purchase, we thought it would be cheaper to buy it here ... read more

Today was our first day exploring the city/state/country of Singapore! We had a bit of a leisurely morning because Jemi had to do some paperwork for her upcoming trip to Canada, so she had to get that straightened up before we could hang out for the day. She has taken Tuesday and Friday off to hang out with us and we will see her husband Jeremy in the evenings. They live in a really nice condo complex about 10 minutes from the airport. It feels like a resort in Florida, where there are multiple buildings that are situated on a very green and treed lot all surrounding the common amenities, such as a kids wading pool with a pirate ship to play on, playgrounds, a beautiful pool, a sandy manmade beach, tennis courts and a big ... read more

With Elysia's eye still red and painful, we had a bit of a leisurely last morning in KL. We didn't feel so pressed to see things here, because they're not all that different from home. Don't get me wrong, we really do like KL. It's worth seeing even just to realize that there are some super modern cities in Asia that are not a whole lot different than those in North America. We think that KL would be a great place to live as an ex-pat, and we would definitely add it to the list of places we may want to live one day. Just in terms of major sightseeing venues, there isn't a whole lot. Unless you want to shop- KL is a shopping mecca. I highly suggest that if you do like to shop, ... read more

First thing this morning, we left our hostel and headed Northeast to the Petronas Twin Towers to purchase admission tickets. We arrived at the towers when the ticket booth opened (8:30 am), and there was already a huge line! We were a little bit worried because we knew that they only sell a very limited number of tickets to visit the famous skybridge and observation lounge on the 86th floor (they usually sell out first thing in the morning). After waiting in line for about an hour, we were pleased to snag a couple of tickets for sunset (tickets are sold for entry in 15 minute intervals), but most of the other times of the day were sold out anyways. The walk to and from the towers was quite nice. To walk through a chunk of ... read more

Although we were starting to feel like Nepal was home, it was time to leave and begin the next stage of our Southeast Asia journey. We packed our bags up in the morning and had time to have a nice breakfast with our friends before we left for the airport. On our way out of the hotel, the manager gave us some scarves that were apparently blessed by some deity (don't know who or what they're called). He gave this gift to us because he's so thankful for all the business that Elysia has brought him (because she recommended the hotel to all the other volunteers, and they stayed for weeks= lots of business in the off season). Our flight left Nepal at 11:10 and we arrived in Kuala Lumpur around 6pm (about a 4 hour ... read more

Today was our last day in Nepal. Funny how you can stay put in a country for almost 4 weeks and start to feel comfortable with it and start feeling like it's a home away from home. Now our time here has come to an end, but we've really loved our time in Nepal and the people have been just so amazingly friendly and helpful. We will definitely have to come back again!! We are sad to leave but there's less excitement when things become comfortable, so it's time to move on and explore new lands! Anyways, we planned to spend our last day visiting the last few sites we hadn't been to. We woke up and had a leisurely breakfast and then around 10:45, a bunch of us (us, Nasrin, Erik, Katie and Pauline) hired ... read more
