Sunday, August 31, 2008 - Day 8 Venice Hooboy!! Barely a week into the trip and I'm whipped - obviously no trip to China is in my future unless there's a dramatic improvement in my physical fitness. I seem to have wrenched something in my left side (at least I hope that's what it is and not a kidney stone or something - never had that, so probably not it). But I'm carrying on as best I can - altho I did cut the Venice day trip a bit short and have the adventure of getting back to the hotel at Mestre by Vaporetto (boat bus, E6.50) and train E1.0 (the best bargain of the trip so far), with a couple (a little older) from Australia. We walked to the Rialto Bridge and took the Vaporetto ... read more

Day 10, Tuesday, Sept. 02, 2008 Fantastic day today; right now I'm sitting on my 12th floor balcony looking out at Lake Geneva - gorgeous, a little haze and a few clouds, but superb weather today. Bkfst at hotel in Lucerne not too good (my dinner last night was very nice), bt I didn't come here to eat. A slightly later start - on the bus at 8:30. Dropped some people in town, then most of us headed up for the Mount Pilatus visit - a short bus ride to edge of town, a four-person enclosed cable car (like a charilift) for 20-30 minutes, then a fairly short part squeezed into a large cable car (about 40 people) for about six minutes. The weather was amazing - a little hazy, but lots of sun, absolutely beautiful ... read more

Day 3, Aug. 26, Tuesday, Full Day in Amsterdam (Excellent day for me, probably a boring report). Spent E3.85 last night to send email home and try to upload Blog. Hope email worked, Blog didn't; the computer in the hotel lobby didn't recognize the files on my flash drive - will try to remember to convert to .rtf to see if that helps, not sure what to do about photos - they may have to wait until I get home (unless I find a linux email machine over here, or a way to use this one that is somewhat cheaper). Today started out with a huge buffet breakfast; I think I was the only one who tried the champagne, and made a mimosa. A beautiful chandelier in dining room - I went for the table under ... read more

Aug 27, Wednesday Up at 5:45 a.m., suitcase out at 6:20, bkfst at 6:30, on bus at 7 a.m.. Rest stop at border, 50 cents. Got to Cologne about 10:15 to go to Cathedral. Had a “big hour” (Marieke's term) to get a snack, use restroom, and visit Cathedral. Cathedral is very large, huge stained glass windows; bought two postcards (E1,80). Used RR at MacDonalds (.50) and got small cheeseburger and small soda (E1,00 each) (Sprite - had a little uncomfortable tummy on long ride - one pill from another tourite, and borrowed a wrist band from Cindy). Another lengthy time in bus to get to St.Goar for boat cruise on Rhine. One photo stop along the river at Remagen for bridge towers - of “end of war” fame, before getting to boat. Cruise was very ... read more

Day 1; Aug 24 Trip from AVL to CVG went fine - comic flight attendant. I forgot to take my baggie of bath stuff out of carry-on with everything else I had to do for security. No cost for nonalcoholic drinks. Ate a pack of lunchables on plane. Arrived at about 6:05, into terminal after long taxiing. Wifi at CVG requires a subscription to Tmobile; looks like $30 a month with a year's sub required. Day 2; Aug 25 - Dull arrival info. All is well, nothing exciting to report. Did luck out on the overseas/overnight flight - had a 3-person row to myself; for once being a single traveller paid off! “Freebies” still on my int'l Delta flight: sleep mask, ear plugs and tiny headset; menu for dinner (choice of two entrees) chicken was tasty ... read more

Today is Friday -- first chance to get on to Blog. Battery is low, so this may be short, but will get to more soon. Everything is going well -- today pretty strenuous, but saw Neuschwanstein, my prirmay destination, and also the splendiferous, tho "small" Linderhof castle, both built for/by King Ludwig. Am drinking a Konig Ludwig Dunkel (dark beer) that I got at the local grocery store (for a 6=pack less than twice what bars charge for one).... read more

This is my first page about my upcoming trip to Europe. I leave in two weeks, and my travel agent only has part of my documents. I will probably not be able to do an entry every day -- it will depend on how often I can get access to wifi, or a hotel lobby computer. I am new to wifi and blogging, so I am practicing with this short intro. This is my first trip across the Atlantic, although I have done quite a bit of traveling on this side of "the pond." I hope to capture a lot of nitty-gritty details, so I hope my readers can do some skimming and not get bored. I haven't taken bus tours before, and I haven't found out as much info about how they work as I ... read more
