On the way to pumpkin hill there is a hill called Brandon Hill and on this hill is Brandon caves, the locals call them the bat caves. We walked here a few weeks ago but not had a chance to write up the blog so here it is! The caves have several species of bats in them, mainly fruit bats but there are some 1 metre wing span vampire bats here too, the largest bat in the northern hemisphere! They don’t bite humans or cattle they eat small birds. We were told they have their own chamber but we did not go and see them as you have to explore deeper into the caves. Stories go that captain Henry Morgan the welsh pirate hid his treasure on the island and the bat caves is a place ... read more

Have been meaning to write a blog about the station since I got here but not managed it yet, so here goes! Have also managed to get some better pictures over the time as well, been here four weeks now already! I think I said before that the island of Utila has several animals Endemic to the island the Swamper iguana (Centanauri bakeri) also called wishi willy by the locals, being one of them. A biologist discovered the swamper over a hundred years ago but all his papers were lost until the 90´s when a german biologist came to the island and took an interest in the swamper. The swamper is on the critically endangered list and probably always will be because it is endemic, even though the station has been successful in increasing the population. ... read more

This blog is to tell you a bit more about the island of Utila. The island is one of three islands called the Bay Islands about an hour boat ride NE of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea and its only 7 miles by about 3 miles in size. The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus and the islanders still speak a sort of english carribbean spanish mix! the locals seem very friendly. The roads are concrete and seem like golf course paths! There are only a few trucks on the island the majority use push bikes or mopeds and quads and golf carts are popular, with a few tuk tuk taxis. You need to listen out so as to not get run over! The island was created by volcanic activity which caused the coral bed to ... read more

Hi all, thanks for the messages via the blog site. Every Thursday at The Iguana Research Station we go on an excursion. The guys already here said one week they went to a beach on the island and helped dig up whale bones from a stranded whale a while back! This week we set off to the North of the island, had my expectations but as you will see from the photos it was amazing. The station has spare clothes left from previous volunteers so got myself a pair of trousers and a dodgy pink hat! Knew we would get muddy! We all made ourselves a pack lunch for the beach we would be visiting via our hike and set off into the jungle and then the surroundings changed to the mangroves, very muddy! a few ... read more

Got to my hotel to find two doors up from a rstaraunt i ate at with my parents in the eighties! Walked up South Beach (took an hour to find!) the beach is massive and found out chatting to a beach man that the superbowl is being played here next weekend and loads of ... read more
