Finished writing this in Santiago , largest city in Chile. Hello everyone been a while since last posting! Forgot to add a map last blog to show the second half of GAP overland trip so added to this one, continuing from La Paz where the last map ended. Obviously the lines are as the crow flies not as the truck drives! From the google maps it says we have travelled around 5000 miles from start to finish but maybe actually more, also travelled many miles by plane, 4X4 and walking! Will have to tot the miles up properly some time. Will keep adding maps as the travels progress. Last time I left you we had finished the GAP tour and seen the sights of Rio De Janeiro. We (Mike, Sarah and me) moved to our surf ... read more

We set off from Iguazu stopping in Curitiba for one night before heading to Paraty, as I said in last blog a beach resort 4 hours outside Rio. We arrived early evening so only had time for some dinner check into hostel and a few drinks before going to bed. Chris (Norway) and I were sharing a room and as they only had couples doubles left we ended up having 3 rooms joined together with 11 beds! lol Following day we had booked a Caipirinha boat trip, a short trip along the beaches being served Caipirinhas all day, Caipirinha is the Brazilian national alcoholic cocktail made from Cachaça, sugar and lime, very moreish! We had to walk 20 mins into town to get the boat, a small hippyish affair with just us on it. The boat ... read more

What another amazing week what with snorkelling in Bonito and Iguazu falls! Three days of trucking in between but worth it! Last blog we had been to the Pantanal and were about to head off to Iguazu falls (Great Water). On the way we stopped in Bonito a relatively small town but famous for its excellent freshwater snorkelling hidden away in the forests. We arrived around lunchtime chilled out for the afternoon and wrote my blog in an internet cafe. The drivers cooked us dinner as we were supposed to be camping for two days but Martin had managed to change so we were in the hotel. The next morning seven of us had signed up to go freshwater snorkelling, we were picked up around nine and taken 40 mins drive onto a farm where the ... read more

We arrived in Sucre (2800m asl) late afternoon with the sun shining yippee! We checked into our nice hotel in the centre of town after our seven hour bus journey. We went out for dinner in a place where you could watch movies so we saw a film about the working conditions of the Potosi silver mine we had visited called "Devil Miner". Next day we took the opportunity to get our laundry done and chill in a restaraunt balcony and have a look around the city and sit in the sun, gladly away from the cold at last! The second day eight of us had booked a mountain bike tour for the majority of the day for a measly twenty pounds. This was "real" mountainbiking in that it was offroad and on a mountain! We ... read more

What another amazing but different week! Have added a a map above to show how far we have travelled halfway through this GAP Adventure, over 2000 miles but as the crow flies not the roads! Last blog we were chilling in Cusco for three days after the Inca trail, weather was grey so bit boring! managed to get a dodgy haircut lol and bought a windproof jacket knowing that some of the next parts of the trip would be cold at night due to altitude and getting souther. We set off from Cusco towards lake Titicaca, minus Shirley and Barbara the canadian ladies, both leaving early due to Barbs altitude sickness, I am now the oldest one of the gang. We had another 8 hour drive with a lunch stop and obviously more movies! We arrived ... read more

Been another amazing week! We left Arequipa around 0800 in the morning and set off towards Colca. En route we visited some Inca tombs set into the mountain side facing east, some small villages and some Llama farms. We also stocked up on coca leaves, coca cookies and coca sweets for helping prevent altitude sickness. Also bought a sun hat and a warm hat for the cold, see pickies! We travelled up to 4910m above sea level with great views of the volcanoes around us surrounding Arequipa stopping for some coca tea on the way. We stayed the night in a lodge in the middle of nowhere, the first place I have stayed in since travelling that had heating! Next day we drove to Colca Canyon, the canyon was formed over 7 million years ago by ... read more

Having to do blogs more often at the moment as seeing so many things and travelling so much so better to do more often and shorter, lots of pickies and i cut back from original amount! We set off from Lima at 0430, with three new Gappers Charlie, Mike and Sarah. We headed down the west coast of Peru through the second most driest place on earth towards Huacachina, an oasis in the desert surrounded by sand dunes. On the way we visited the Balleras Islands, similar to the Gallapagas islands with many birds, penguins and sealions. We went around the island in a speedboat which stopped close to the rocky shore so we could see the wildlife and smell the bird pooh! When we arrived at the hotel in the oasis we had the opportunity ... read more

The eight hour truck journey went quite quick, couple of movies, couple of stops and playing on iPhone etc We left Banos about nine in the morning couple of us making ham butties for a bus breakfast as we did not have brekkie arranged that day. We headed south west towards Cuenca (second largest city in Peru) some scary mountain roads on the way! We arrived at the hotel about five in the afternoon settled in then went out for dinner. The hotel was pretty amazing we had a five bed room for four of us with tv, massive room, wifi and a large balcony. The following morning Simon, Chris ( nicknamed chicken now, another story!) walked into the centre for some brekkie and then walked around some museums and churches. The group met for lunch, ... read more

Couple of days in Quito were quite enough as not a lot to see and told not really safe, more so at night. Seemed to be blokes with guns all over the place outside banks, armed police, outside hotels even outside KFC! Also due to the altitude always seemed to be cloudy, not seen the sky for 2 days and bit chilly! The old part of town is supposed to be picturesque but as on my own decided to chill and just did a bit of walking around the city and bought a sim card to get my iphone working at last, managed to type up my last blog on it. Everyone on the tour group turned up on the Friday, 17 people in all mainly fron England some from Canada also Germany, NZ, Oz and ... read more
