After taking the night train back to Bangkok from Chiang Mai, and 1 nights stayover near the airport it was time to leave Thailand after a great 45 days. We had a flight booked for Phnom Penh that we had organised before leaving Australia. It was nice to be enroute to a new country, we loved our time in Thailand but after a bit over a month it was definately time for a change. We had booked our stay at Mad Monkey Hostel, a quieter area of the city, and after a taxi ride from the aiport we arrived ready to book in and relax in the downstairs bar. A few well earned drinks, a great meal and some interaction with the local kids trying to sell everything and anything, and also a chat with one ... read more

After the action packed Songkran, it was nice to settle onto an overnight train north, even though it required a 6 hour wait at the train station - thank god for WIFI. While waiting at the train station we got the news that Marks brother had just proposed to his girlfriend back in Australia, we luckily had enough time to put a call through with congratulations. The train ride is an easy journey with a nice comfortable bed to get a good night’s sleep. We arrived in Chiang Mai around 9.30am (two hours later than it was scheduled to arrive, which was fine by us) and stepped off the train to a swarm of taxi & tuk tuk drivers all vying for our attention. We crammed our bags into a tuk tuk & arrived at our ... read more

Can anything really prepare you for Songkran on Khao San Road in the centre of Bangkok's backpacker district? The answer is NO. After spending the morning organising a train to Chang Mai for the following day, we decided we should amp ourselves up and head to Khao San Road and really get amongst it. The taxi took us as far as it could. We got to within 1km from Khao San and began to navigate our way through swarms of people blanketing us in buckets of ice cold water and smotherings of thick, white clay. I just don't think it's necessary to use iced water, that's all. At one point a man said "Sorrry" as he smeared his two clayed-up hands across my cheeks. Okay, I like New Years - but this was insane! There is ... read more

After a pretty full on week since arriving on the island, we decided the second week would be all about swimming, lazing on the sand, reading and just basically watching the days go by. Our days were spent with leisurely breakfasts, sun all day and then dinner from one of many restaurants on the sand or from a street side vendor. You don’t always feel like going out to eat every night, so on a Friday night we noticed a decent Matt Damon movie on TV, so it was takeaway pizza and soft drink on our bed and it was sensational. This also gave us the chance to see our first Cabaret show, which was performed at our hotels beach side restaurant. The show was made of 5 or 6 Lady Boys who put on quite ... read more

After a crazy bus ride, in which we spent very little time on our own side of the road and then a ferry we had completed our first Island hop. With no booking our first job was to get accommodation for the night, and there were plenty of choices. After just 1 night on the island we moved hotels to a place called 15 Palms and booked for 14 nights - in retrospect maybe a little bit too long in 1 place. Our plan was to stay settled and spend Songkran (Thai New Year) in Ko Chang. First impressions of the island. Mountainous, cooler climate in the hills, less dogs, cheaper laundry and loud music where we were situated on White Sands Beach. Ko Chang is the second largest island in Thailand, after Phuket, so it ... read more

After a couple of quiet days of Mark with food poisoning (or a really bad "Chang-Over") it was time to get back into the routine of things - by this time we had pretty much figured out where the best coffee in town is, and quite often it is nt in actual fact where the neon sign says "Best Coffee in Town". Our coffee shop was 'Jump' - beautifully air-conditioned & they had the best Bossa Mix, although I think most cafe's in Thailand seem to all have the same CD in their players. Most of our time on Ko Samet was spent on the beach with a good book and our frisbee. We pretty much have the frisbee down-pat now. One of the many highlights on this small island is the one and only beach ... read more

The next few days were spent hobbling to the shared bathrooms far too oftenAfter being picked up in a land cruiser and driven the 2.5 hours from Bangkok to Banphe (Rayong District),our driver was a friend of Tony's and also German - we spent most of the drive assuming this was Tony only to discover that he was waiting for us at the jetty. We then jumped on a speed boat with the actual owner of the bungalow style guest house we had booked, Tony runs Baan-Pra-Kai-Kaew with his Thai wife. After arriving it was clear our driver, who we spoke to the whole way, would prove to be the only German we had a full conversation with during this stay. The accomodation is basic, we spent the first 3 nights in a small room with ... read more

In retrospect doing the floating markets 2 days into a world trip wasn't the smartest thing we have done We spent our first full 3 days in Bangkok. We spent these days exploring Siam Square, including MBK where our first 2 great purchases took place - for myslef a pair of fishermans pants that have being worn once, and for Bree a see through dress. We ventured to Khao San Rd (backpackers paradise) and took in the surrounds whilst also booking a 1/2 day tour to the floating markets for the following day. We ate often at small corner shops and off the street where we could pick up a local meal of fried rice and chicken for as little as $1.03 each. And so it begins, we left Adelaide via Melbourne on route to Bangkok to begin our world adventure. We started at 6.00am and arrived in bangkok at 8pm ready to jump into an organised pick up and head to the hotel - 1 problem was they left with out us, never mind a quick taxi ride for 500 baht did the trick. Putting the airport pick up aside our first night was a great indroduction to the trip, we were booked into the Novotel in Siam (a gift from Bree's previous empolyers).... read more
