Geo: 36.5544, -121.924The weather for Monterey was predicted to be windy and possible rain and so we decided it would be a good day to head down and check out Big Sur area. In years past, we have camped at Pfieffer Big Sur State Park and enjoyed several days in the area.In early April, a houseless person discovered a crack in the bridge support of the Pfieffer Canyon bridge. It was determined that the bridge would have to be taken down and replaced and as a result all places below this bridge would be closed if you were coming from Monterey. As a result, some of our favorite places would not going to be open and the Pfieffer Big Sur State Park was closed because of the Soberanes fire that had happened earlier along with the ... read more

Geo: 36.5544, -121.924halDecided on this trip to go to Point Lobos and check things out. It has been years since we were there. We have passed the entrance many times on our way to the Big Sur area and always see cars parked on either side of the road. Evidently you can walk in for free or pay an entrance fee to drive your car in to Point Lobos. What we have seen is that the parking lots fill quite rapidly and one day when we left they were only letting a car in after another car left.Because we had gotten to the park early, we were able to drive to the parking lot for the hike to Cypress Point. We did a very nice hike out to Cypress Point in pouring rain but we were ... read more

Geo: 36.5976, -121.897We always enjoy our time in Monterey. So much time can be spent just walking or biking the waterfront area and stopping to enjoy the seals, otters and other wildlife you see. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a world class place and would be recommended to anyone who has never been there. There are kayak rentals, whale watching boats and many other activities for those who wish to do so. We did two excursions to Point Lobos and Big Sur while we were in the Monterey area. Monterey is of course a great place to enjoy fresh seafood and other excellent meals as well as all the shopping you could hope for!We also enjoy walking Fisherman's Wharf and checking out all the shops and restaurants and of course great people watching! One of the ... read more

Geo: 36.5976, -121.897Flight to Oakland just fine, get our rent car and head to Monterey area. Spent our first night in AirBnB nearby, had nice evening and were on the road early the next day. Got to Veteran's Memorial early and our favorite campsite was available and we set up and then went shopping and checking things out in town.Veteran's Memorial Park is a great asset for the budget minded camper. You can only camp for three days at a time but can return after a day elsewhere. There is a deduction on the cost of the campsite for seniors! There are showers and lockers for people that are camping with a vehicle. Nice playground and place where people play fetch with their dogs as well. Behind the shower and toilet area are two nice sinks ... read more

Geo: 8.69371, -83.6581The other restaurant we went to was featured as #1 by Trip Advisor and we just decided to chance being able to get in without reservations and we were successful. This is a very unique place to eat and there is a fruit bird feeder right by the tables and so you get to see some very colorful song birds while you are waiting for your food. His menu has only three items on it; the catch of the day served with mashed potatoes and steamed veggies, a vegetarian option with spaghetti and steamed veggies (fish can be added) and the third a lettuce/tomato wrap with the fish of the day and spicy dressing. All of the portions are huge and can be shared and still have leftovers! Kurt has a fish caught every day and ... read more

Geo: 36.5976, -121.897Called this a remote spot because if you come by land, you feel that you are heading to a very remote spot. To go by land from Puerto Jimenez you take the bus to La Palma de Osa and from there you catch a "collective" to Drake. This option to Drake is only during the dry season because you must cross water/rivers five times and they become impassable during the rainy season. As it happened, the "collectivo" was not running the day we went and so there was one of the local transporters with his truck with two bench seats in the back. He told us to get in the back seat and the other couple that was traveling there got to sit on the bench seats in the back. The ride was a ... read more

Geo: 8.53622, -83.3051While we were staying at both of the places, we took advantage of the bicycles to go to the grocery store and run other errands while in town. Both places have baskets on their bicycles and so it is easy to transport things from place to place. The two long rides we did were out to Playa Preciosa one day and along Rio Nuevo another day. To get to Playa Preciosa you head down the road by the airport to the left. There are other side roads as you bicycle along which are also interesting places to stop and enjoy the view of the Golfo or enjoy a bird sighting. This is a fun area to just take off and explore and see what you can see. When you get to the end of the road ... read more

Geo: 8.53622, -83.3051One of the reasons we keep returning to Puerto Jimenez is the fact we have found a wonderful dentist here, Melissa Morales. Through a set of serendipitous events several years ago, we have been doing our yearly checkup in Puerto Jimenez as well as any further dental work that needs to be done.Over the years, we have made friends with her husband, and children and so this is an extra treat to get together with the family. Her family has the La Leona Eco Lodge and one day we may splurge and stay there for a few days and maybe even finally make it into the Osa Corcovado National Park.... read more

Geo: 8.53622, -83.3051Just like the Scarlet Macaws, the Toucans are very much in evidence around Puerto Jimenez and are also fun to watch their antics. This must have been mating season for many of the birds because of the displays we saw them engaged in.... read more

Geo: 8.53622, -83.3051Puerto Jimenez is one of the places you can easily see Scarlet Macaws flying around, perched in trees, carrying on conversations with each other and actually engaged in mating displays.
