Although I love to keep people's anticipation high, I feel that it's about time I introduced you all to Shanti Bhavan. After all, as of 3:30 a.m. tomorrow morning, I will have been at Shanti Bhavan for 48 hours! First impressions are hard to express because there are so many battling for the page right now. So, some quick basics (Minnesota-style, if you will): The weather here is very pleasant, and very dry. It's supposed to be monsoon season, but I have yet to see a drop, and other volunteers who have been here longer said it has been a while. But the temperature is comfortable day and night, and I am indoors for most of the day, so no sunburn yet! The food is suiting me well so far. A couple of things have caught ... read more

ASTEP = Artists Striving to End Poverty ASTEP is a program dedicated to bringing the arts to disadvantaged children throughout the world. They have programs in India, Africa, New York, and Florida. Each program is a little different, with different partners and different target groups. Whatever the target population, though, ASTEP’s belief is that children can gain important life skills through the arts, and that these life skills are especially valuable for students who were born into an impoverished situation. TGF = The George Foundation TGF was started by a man named Abraham George. In short, he spent his early years in India, became very successful in America, and upon a return trip to India realized that he wanted to help the rural people in some way. He has several non-profit projects in the rural areas ... read more

So, here I am on the cusp of my great India adventure. For those readers who are not familiar with my adventure-to-come, let me explain: Last January, I went with a small group of friends to the American College Theatre Festival (ACTF) regional conference in Ames, IA. It's a big to-do that gives theatre departments and professionals an opportunity to rub elbows, with lots of performances and workshops and competitions. There's a lot going on at any given moment, so we'd occassionally plan to divide and conquer. That way, at least we could share notes afterward. One of the days, my two roommates ended up going to a workshop run by a representative of Artists Striving to End Poverty (ASTEP), while I went to another (and far less interesting) workshop. When they came back, they were ... read more
