Waking up later around noonish, I showered, only to be sweating again in ten minutes. Downstairs, I got breakfast again from the hostel- some scrambled eggs and fresh fruit this time. Dragonfruit is very popular here with its exotic pink spiky peel. Unlike you'd expect, it tastes pretty bland, and it looks like a white colored kiwi inside. Anyways, today's plans consisted of going to Wat Arun and China Town. Supposedly, Wat Arun is best to see during sunrise or sunset from the boat ride over, but we visited in the middle of the day because no one had the energy to wake up at 5 AM. There are ferry like boats that we rode over, and believe it or not, the boat drivers are just as crazy as the taxi and tuk tuk ... read more

Arriving in Bangkok, I waited in the airport for the rest of the group to land. We took an hour long bus ride to our hostel in the city, Nappark. With this being my first experience in a hostel, I was a bit nervous as to what it would be like. But when we got here, all the anxiety disappeared because the place is so nicely kept and clean. Also, we've met so many friendly people from all over, and it's entertaining to hear everyone's different accents and stories. Exhausted from the day of traveling, we rested before Jen showed us around the city. We walked around Khao San Road- a busy area with restaurants, bars, and plenty of vendors. Unlike Koh Samui, the vendors here are very persistent and even yell at you when they ... read more

I began my day with sitting on the beach while writing a dialogue for my creative writing class. I order fruit from our resort so frequently that when I sat down on the lawn chair, right away a server came over and asked, "fruit again?" The mango, pineapple, and watermelon here are especially delicious and fresh! Our first excursion took place at Namuang Safari park again, but a different section than the last time. The whole park is very vast, so today's experience was much different even though we got to see the same waterfall. We first saw a baby elephant! She's four years old and her tusks are no longer than four inches. We even got to hear this elephant let out a small squeal when Edward stepped over the fence to take a picture ... read more

Today, we got picked up by a jeep at 8:00 AM. We arrived at Namuang Safari Park where we were led through an extensive tour. First, we had the opportunity to ride elephants. Initially, I was very excited about this because I love elephants! However, thinking about the stress that the tourists put on their backs every day took away from my enjoyment. I asked our guide what type of elephants they are and basic questions like what kinds of food they eat and where they sleep. In simple English, he was able to tell me that they're Indian elephants that have lived between 30 and 40 years. He told me that they eat bananas and cocoa leaves. However, he was reluctant to tell me where they sleep... but perhaps he just couldn't understand my question ... read more

For New Years Eve, we spent the night on Koh Phangan island which is near Koh Samui. We scrambled last minute to come up with a plan of transportation, and had taxis and boat rides scheduled ahead of time with safe and credible companies. Our taxi picked us up along with 8 other people from various resorts, and we drove over to the shore where we would catch the boat. Little did we know, we'd be standing in line for 2 hours waiting in a mass of hot, sweaty people all hyped up for the party. We struggled to stay together as a group of seven because people would anxiously push their way to the front to make it on the boat. Unfortunately, we lost our friends Bobby and Quentin, so we were separated before even ... read more

On Wednesday the 30th, we woke up very early to meet our 8:00bus which took us to the ferry. Getting on the boat, we were greeted by friendly Thais who served us a small breakfast (a banana, a croissant, and a hot drink). Then we rode on the boat for an hour until we reached Ang Thong National Marine Park. At the first stop, Koh Mae Koh, we got out and hiked up some very steep stairs to see a beautiful lagoon called the "hidden lake." The lagoon was a stunning teal blue- the pictures I'll include cannot give it justice. After hiking back down, we boarded the boat for a lunch of chicken and potatoes with a peanut sauce, rice, mixed vegetables, and pineapple. The boat then brought ... read more

Our first day trip involved visiting various temples. We started at the famed big Buddha in the center of the island. There were lavish steps with shiny tiles and mosaics of bright greens and blues. My friend Bobby was the first to walk up and did not know about the rule of taking shoes off before entering a sacred temple. Some monks yelled at him in broken English, "disrespectful merican"! The Thai believe that the feet mark the lowest part of the body and therefore they should never be pointed at Buddha because it is a sign of disrespect. Like many worship grounds, other dress code applies (covering shoulders, modest clothes, etc.) In Wat Plai Laem, we visited the 18 arm image, Guanin: the Chinese Goddess of Mercy and Compassion. She is said to be the ... read more

After a 10 hour layover in Bangkok, I finally landed in the Koh Samui airport. From there, I took a taxi to Lamai Coconut Resort which is right along the shore. The director, Jen, kindly showed me to my bungalow in the dark. Since I arrived at night, I couldn't see the ocean, but from the roar and the mist, I knew we were very close. I settled in, unpacked my bags and met my roommate, Emma who goes to school at Miami University in Ohio. We bonded over our past travel experiences and common interests. We also share similar career goals in allied health and supplementing international work. Emma is studying nursing and would like to spend time in developing countries. I am studying Physical Therapy and would also enjoy the opportunity of volunteering internationally ... read more
