Geo: 49.7688, 6.64948Last night was a loooooong night. We managed to stay up till 10:00, and I think we both fell asleep fairly quickly. However, I was snap-bang awake at around 2:30 a.m. I didn't look at the clock till John got up, and it was 3:00 then. We both lay awake for quite some time, which is always torture. John found a noise app on his iPhone (ocean sounds and New Age music) and that helped a little bit. It was also pretty warm in the room. When my alarm went off at 7:00, I felt as if I'd never gotten back to sleep even though I know I had.Showering at least made me feel semi-human again. We went down to breakfast around 9:00. Geo: 49.7688, 6.64948... looks like we made it! Anyone who had to hear/read about my drama the past couple of weeks knows that I was feeling pretty fatalistic about actually getting to Germany. And anyone who didn't have to hear/read about it, consider yourself lucky. The Lufthansa flight attendants kept threatening to strike, but they kept putting it off till closer and closer to our departure date. On Wednesday, we read online that they were going to strike on Thursday (the day we were supposed to fly), but then on Thursday morning it was reported that they wouldn't strike till Friday. Still not completely convinced, we went to SeaTac and – lo and behold – actually boarded a Lufthansa plane bound for Frankfurt! On time and everything! For the first time, I'm able to type "we" – ... read more

Geo: 47.6353, -122.302Since we didn't have to vacate the hotel till 11:00 this morning, I planned to sleep till 8:00. But I woke up at 5:45, partly because I needed the bathroom but also because there was a noise that reminded me of when I was in Amsterdam and had an unwanted rodentine visitor. (It turned out to be noise coming from another room.) I had just gotten back to sleep when the fire alarm went off. God those things are mind-scramblingly loud! I had just grabbed my passport and wallet and was putting on my jacket (because unless there are flames actually licking at my heels, I am not fleeing in just my nightgown) when the alarm stopped. Sheesh! After my heart returned to a more-or-less normal rhythm, I did manage to sleep for another ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Our original plan for today was to go to the Tower of London, then take a walk along the Thames and go see St. Paul's Cathedral. But Katherine felt even crappier today than she did yesterday, so right after breakfast she went back to her room to nap. About an hour later she was feeling more human, but not quite up for doing a lot of walking, so we decided to take a Big Bus Tour. I haven't done one of them since Katie, John and I were here in 2000, and I honestly don't remember it lasting for over three hours. Can't say we didn't get our money's worth! Part of the reason it took so long is that there are traffic diversions creating chaos everywhere, on top of which traffic is just ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Poor Katherine. She woke up with a cold (actually, it was coming on yesterday) and she feels pretty low. The initial plan for this morning if the weather was cooperating (which it was) was to walk across Hyde Park and down Constitution Hill to Buckingham Palace. Katherine opted for the Tube instead, and I can't say that I blame her. Since we were starting from Lancaster Gate, we walked over to the parks for a few minutes, but the Italian Gardens are hidden by hoardings. In fact, there are hoardings up all over London, as well as odd little pedestrian diversions that create single-file traffic on the busy sidewalks. It's chaotic, but the city is prettying itself up for the 2012 Olympics next year. There are also all sorts of Tube closures, but that ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Katherine, Michelle and I took a taxi to the airport (Katherine's treat) at 9:30 this morning. Our cabbie was amusing, talking politics, gay weddings and Catholics. He also – and this made me really, really happy – had “My Lovely Horse” as his cell phone ringtone! I told him why that made me happy and that I couldn't wait to tell John, and he said I should give John a big kiss from him. :-)A stressful few minutes at the airport when the check-in kiosk wouldn't let Katherine check in, but it was all sorted out at the desk (“Sometimes, the kiosks don't work.”) and we did a little last-minute shopping in the duty free. We also sat in the Chocolate Lounge having a scone and tea (Katherine), and drinking Baileys Chocolate Mochas (Michelle ... read more

Geo: 53.3441, -6.26749We drove out of Portrush at 8:30, and it occurred to me that I've seen very few cats on the tour, and none that I could take a photo of. Have seen lots of dogs, however (including two corgis), and enough cows and sheep to last me the rest of my life. In fact, most of my photos will be labeled “sheep,” “cow,” “another cow,” “sheep,” “sheep and cows,” “green field,” “sheep” ....We saw north Belfast from the motorway. It's still sectarian and, in fact, goes virtually street-by-street Protestant, Catholic, Protestant, Catholic. The British government still has to build peace lines (or peace walls) between certain streets to keep the peace. West Belfast is mainly Catholic, east Belfast is mainly Protestant, and south Belfast apparently prefers to stay out of it altogether. The... read more

Geo: 55.1991, -6.65407If it's not one thing, it's another. Lovely quiet hotel, comfy bed ... and a light on the ceiling right inside the door that stayed on all night long. I asked Katherine this morning if there's one in their room. She said there is, and that she figured out there's a dimmer switch by the door. I found the dimmer switch too, but even at the lowest position, the light is bright enough to read by. Am once again missing the eyeshades British Airways used to give out.Today was a lot less mentally taxing than yesterday, but far more physically demanding. Geo: 55.1991, -6.65407A good night's sleep at last! No door rattling, no howling wind. Just a couple of odd dreams involving trying to get out of a building that kept turning into a medieval castle. Our first stop this morning was at St. Columba's in Drumcliffe. W.B. Yeats is buried there, along with his wife George. I've no idea why she was called George, but apparently she was American and quite a bit younger than W.B. There is also in the church grounds a high cross that dates from the 10th century. It's in fantastic condition for something that's over 900 years old.The woman who sat behind me on the bus today kept snapping and cracking her gum. I was directly behind John the driver, and I could hear him and Declan asking each other, “Do you ... read more

Geo: 53.8011, -9.52221No banging and rattling last night! I think room 4 must have been occupied and they closed the window. And Sonja told me at breakfast this morning that Gary put a chair against their door because they like to sleep with the window open. That was so nice of him.Still quite windy this morning, though not nearly as bad as it has been, and it poured like hell while we were having breakfast. But as we left Galway there was a rainbow, and we even had to ask Declan what the strange glowing light in the sky was. He said it was our closest star or something like that.On the way to Cong, Declan told us about the Cross of Cong, which had been in Cong Abbey for centuries upon centuries.
