I was very sad to leave Queenstown, as it was such a great town, not too big, not too small, lots to do, beautiful scenery and great people, just great. Anyway, I had to move on, back to Christchurch and on to the north. The drive was stunning, I saw Mount Cook again, but from the other side, beautiful lakes and a church that backed on to one of the amazing lakes. If you sat on a pew you could just look past the preacher, through the window onto the lake... wow. When I finally arrived into Christchurch, there wasn't time for much, apart from a yummy mexican, dinner not person. The flight to Wellington the following morning was awesome, it in a small propeller power plane that did not fly very high. From the plane ... read more

Today was a free day so I had a nice lie in, until a shocking 9:30!!!! I then ambled up to the mountain, went up in a cable car and had lots of goes on the luge/toboggan. I thought it would be a metal track like the ones I'd seen before, but it was concrete and you had full control of where you went, eek. It was fun and I managed to not injure myself, which is impressive. I also got a t-shirt made for me with a "maori" New Zealand on the front and a little kiwi on the back. Up North soon... ... read more

An early start and a very indirect drive to Milford Sound - it's only about a 100 k as the crow flies, but it's nearly 300 by road, stupid mountains! Beautiful mountains though, please see the pictures, apparently it's technically not a sound, it's a fjord as it was formed by a glacier and not a river or something. Still pretty!... read more

So I jumped out of a plane. I have no idea how it went so well after everything else having gone so badly (please see previous entries)! I walked down to the sky dive office just before 8:30 am. I saw a lot of clouds in the sky and thought phew, sky diving's off. Sure enough, when I got to the shop they told me it wasn't going to happen at this stage, however they booked me on an 11:30 jump. In the mean time I called my mum and had to confess that I was doing a sky dive. I really didn't want to say anything until I had safely landed but I just had to crack! So I went along at 11:30, the sky had cleared, the jump was on. I filled in some ... read more

Went a bit bling in Wanaka and had mussles. We also went to Puzzling World and took some pictures fit for a book on optical illusion. Queenstown - scary stuff. I went "River Boarding" which involves floating down a river on a body board, sounds nice ey!? Turns out the river was full of rapids and whirl pools, went at speeds of 20 kph (at least) and was very hard to do. I spent the whole time screaming that I wanted to get out, didn't like it and that the guides mustn't let me go. I was attached to a guide the whole way and I think I really annoyed - sorry guys, but I'm so grateful otherwise I would have drowned. It's quite distressing just recounting the event! At the end I sat on a ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Franz Josef January 10th 2009

The Franz Josef (Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere in Māori) is a 12 km long glacier located in Westland National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Together with the Fox Glacier 20 km to the south, it is unique in the fact that it descends from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres above sea level amidst the greenery and lushness of a temperate rainforest. It is also one of only three glaciers to come so close to a coastline, with love from Wikipedia. So I set off on my full day hike up Franz Josef glacier, kitted out with "rain" pants, crampons etc etc and fell over within 5 minutes on some rocks, about a mile from the glacier. Ow. I got a nice bloody knee which didn't hurt too much ... read more

On my first day in Christchurch I went to the Antarctica Centre, which sounds very exciting I suppose really. I saw some more penguins, experienced a simulated arctic storm and had a ride in a haaglund. Felt pretty sick after going up and down the massive chicanes! Sunday was the start of the Kiwi Experience, I know it seems rather naff to use these companies, but they're very good if you're on your own! We drove up to Kaikoura and I decided to go fishing for some reason, forgetting that I really don't have sea legs! I managed to get really quite sick and threw up Red Bull and ginger biscuits over the side of the boat! Whoops. I did manage to catch four fish though and the skipper had a metal leg as a shark ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne January 1st 2009

Continued... Monday: Great Ocean Road, I saw the beautiful scenery, the 12 Apostles, the Round the Twist Light House, a wild koala and a wild echidna! Tuesday: I went to see the Penguins with my "cousin" and her family. We sat on the sand ages waiting for them to arrive and eventually they started swimming in from the sea! They were so timid, sometimes they just ran back because they were, unsurprisingly, scared of all the people watching them! Afterwards we went to see them all goiing about their business in the burrows, so cute! I had no idea penguins lived in Australia. Wednesday: New Year's Eve! I went to the RSl with the rellies, then got the train over to Werribee. Once there, I met up with my friend Michelle who I shared a tent ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Dandenong December 26th 2008

Well, I have just spent about 10 days in Dandenong and Melbourne. Here's what I got up to, sorry it's not too detailed: Tuesday: Relaxing day, popped to the shops with my great aunt and uncle and just chilled out Wednesday: The Neighbours Tour! I went to the cul-de-sac where it is filmed, saw some of the outdoor sets and got to meet an actress I just about remembered. Probably a little over priced, but awesome nevertheless! Thursday: Christmas Day, we headed up to The Dandenong Hills for a fairly traditional Christmas meal, my biggest Christmas ever with 17 people, 5 of which were blood relations! Friday: Boxing Day, I'm afraid I watched Mamma Mia (3rd time in a month), Home Alone 3 and ate chocolate, exactly what Boxing Day is about! Saturday: I headed into ... read more
