Apparently my body's clock is a bit off. I'm sure that getting almost no sleep for the few days before I left didn't help, nor did changing nine time zones and only minimal and broken sleep in that process. Either way, I got off the train in Budapest and almost got lost getting to the hostel, which has to be in one of the easiest places to find in the whole city, just a few blocks from the Nagycsarnok (central market hall). The hostel is much like the one I was in last year, a converted apartment with three large rooms (two for sleeping, one as a common room, plus a small kitchen and a shared bathroom). I don't get why I always end up in a top bunk nowhere near a power outlet, however for ... read more

If there's one thing that's a near certainty with me at this point, it's that I'm a city brat. For some reason being holed-up in a small town for a while makes me feel bored and rather out of place - more out of place than "normal". So, at 8am I left the apartment in Siófok and made for the train station. I'd purchased a train ticket that I thought was 2-way from Budapest, which indeed it turned out to be after checking it with the lady at the window in the train station; however the next train (at 9am) was to Keleti pu, not Déli pu, so I had to pay another 220Ft (about $1) to ride. No big deal. The train ride was good, I got to sit with a bunch of groggy riders ... read more

Siófok is cute. It's a pretty sleepy place where most of the year families and old folks wander around licking their gelato and enjoying the sun. A full quarter (or more) of the city, especially alone the NE which is situated along the beach of lake Balaton, was boarded-up and shut-down. It's rather clear that this place is a party town during the season. And it wasn't yet the season. I'm not going to go into GREAT detail as of yet, other than to say that if I had to spend a whole $15 to go somewhere cozy where I could get my own apartment room for $25/night for a few nights to recover from a long week at work, hellish travel, and massive sleep deprivation; this was the place. There was a little festival going ... read more

There are few things in this world more irritating to me than being hella late. I was hella late, and then some. After the nearly four hours of waiting in Frankfurt, I'd gotten on the flight to Ferihegy and promptly passed-out. No, really, I was out before we even took to the sky. I vaguely recall the flight attendant smiling at me as she got up to do her, "this is how you unbuckle your seatbelt, and if this is news to you you really need to get out more" routine, but only vaguely. I did wake up just long enough to confuse the hell out of the purser, who kept trying to push a cheese sandwich on me. I'd take the steps (as usual) of booking a kosher meal on my flights, both because it's ... read more

We touched-down at Franfurt just in time to see my next flight taxi to take-off. That extra fuel we'd taken on hadn't helped, nor had the headwinds to be found in the 70°N latitudes. So, when we got to the gate we were met with queues to rebook us on connecting flights, mine was the next flight to Ferihegy, which was at 16.55 (original flight was 13.00, I made it to the gate at 13.10) What's another almost-4-hours, right? I can't say a whole lot about Frankfurt airport. It might be one of the busiest in Europe, but it's dry and boring. The places to eat are VASTLY overpriced, the Duty-Free's have the usual narrow selection of perfumes, colognes, booze, and smokes. One suggestion, try to ignore the televisions, they play outdated video "news" with "commercial ... read more

There's NOTHING quite as exciting as a 3hr delay while you're already on the aeroplane... Our aeroplane had some sort of leak in one of the water tanks, which it took the maintenance people almost 2 hours to figure out that they couldn't fix, so then they spent another hour connecting the two hoses together so the leak itself "wouldn't matter". I was honestly too exhausted to care much, save for the fact that we were 3hrs late off the ground and I had an EXACTLY 3hr layover in Frankfurt. We were told by the captain that we'd taken on extra fuel to try to make-up some time, and that we were going to fly into a higher latitude than usual, however in the end that didn't do us any good. It was about 4-5 hours ... read more
