As I type This there is news of the Bangladesh factory fire on the news and it fills me with sadness and reminds me how important the message is that my colleague and I are delivering in Africa right now. Today we explained that the managers had responsibities, legal responsibilities to look after the health and safety of their staff and this surprises them - tomorrow I will be discussing the legal aspects and looking at the criminal and the civil laws, these subjects really opens their eyes - especially when they find out that they risk going to prison. My friend Esther who I have spoken fondly of before has had twins "Joy and Josie" here women are entitled to 3 months maternity leave and she is not really coping with being away from her ... read more

Finally, my own personal goal since I was a little girl watching Born Free many years ago has finally happened, I have been to a national park in Kenya and have seen not just one wild Lion but many wild lions. I arrived safely at the hotel last night and before even going to my room I went straight for the tour desk "I need a tour to the National Park tommorow morning" they tried to sell it to me "of course madam you can see many animals there you can see the big 5 there, but not the elephant I am afraid" I explained that I knew this but I was going for Lion, "oooh Madam but you are just checking in you will need to go early for lion you will need to rest" ... read more

well my law training was not great - I covered everything but I spoke way too fast and finished early! (nerves!) However I was better today when I trained them in Accident investigation so I am pleased about that, I have more Accident investigation training to teach tommorow. The HR manager asked me today if I had any advice on how she could advise a colleague with Epilepsy, he has been having fits at work and she is concerned about him getting hurt, she also wondered if there was anything she could do to make him more comfortable. he has about 4 or 5 fits a year, I explained that the best thing is for his colleagues to be aware of what to do and how to deal with it - that really is the best ... read more

Hi all yesterday was a great start to the training, we discussedthe managers responsibilities, and as they had no idea that they had any responsibilities in Health and safety their eyes nearly popped out of their heads. Mark said I started off a bit wobbly but picked up quickly and was good - I felt better after that! I worried as I hadnt trained for a while and havent done this course at all! We are in the new training school and on first looking at it it looks amazing, it is clean and has all the mod cons but the floor is shiney and slippery - I am wearing rubber shoes so I am ok but Mark is in leather shoes so is slipping everywhere! Today I will be mostly discussing Law, I cant beleive ... read more

Hi all, we'll its been 6 months since I did any work travel so here I am back in Tanzania with my colleague Mark - tomorrow we will be teaching our managers a course called Managing Safely, a great big leap on building our health and safety culture within the company - very exciting ( if you like that sort of thing) The flight in was verity bumpy the turbulance was so bad the plane kept dropping it scared the hell out of me - I made it though and had a short sleep before heading out to the pool to chill out and catch the sun - oh how I have missed the sun :) my colleague then pointed to what looked like a weasel, so me ever ready with the internet at my side ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Khao Lak October 17th 2012

We arrived in the evening at Khao Lak, it was cooler than Bangkok as there was a breeze from the coast "ha ha, they are playing animal noises through speakers here" Joe said to me, I laughed and thought he will work it out soon enough. Khao Lak coast is a rainforest area, the hotel is built within the rainforest and we have the sounds of birds, baboons and barking deer as well as crickets and frogs at night. we also soon came to realise that we could not have come to a more German part of Thailand if we had tried, we were greeted by Thai staff in German on a daily basis! Khao Lak coast was the hardest hit in the massive tsunami that hit Thailand in 2004, many of the people living and ... read more

Bangkok is hot, you can smell the drains and it takes a long time to get anywhere as not everything is near the famous skytrain (a metro on stilts above the road) or the underground or the boat. we showered at least twice a day sometimes three times as the sweat just drips off of you, you can eat here for 70p and you can eat for extemely expensive prices and both are good. There is poverty amonst the riches, there are massive skyscrapers with shacks built inbetween as shops or homes and there are little stalls selling food and fruit juices everywhere. "Tuk Tuk, Taxi, Tailored Suit?" these are what you are asked every few seconds. The lady boys that Thailand is so famous for? we didnt see a show but we did spot them ... read more

I offended someone. I think. The gentleman in question has never actually said he was offended, he forwarded my blog and said “Look what Lisa Kelly wrote about us.” After which two men wrote some rather nasty comments about me. However if they had read the blog properly they would have realised it was NOT about them at all but a general comment about expats globally. As you all know my job is important to me, I love what I do so I decided to delete the “offending” blog and sent an apology to all the men that received the blog. Two men came back and told me not to worry as they enjoyed what I had written as it was accurate. This incident led to me temporarily closing my entire blog and then making it ... read more

Africa » Sierra Leone » Freetown May 19th 2012

My Journey home started at 4pm Freetown time (5pm UK time) where I was taken to the port and bought a ticket for the ferry for Lunghi which is where the airport is based, whilst sitting waiting for the ferry an elderly gentleman came in and said "are you going to London?" of which I replied yes, he asked if I would post a letter for him - it had a UK stamp on it so I agreed, after he walked off the others in the room told me to open it as I dont know what is in the letter - and of course they are right, it really was stupid of me to agree to take the letter - I guess its just my trusting nature. Thankfully upon opening the letter it only contained ... read more
