After deciding not to go for a run today as I had been planning, I bummed around in my room for a while and ate breakfast. At eleven forty-five I got sick of waiting for people to get over their post-clubbing sleep-ins and hiked upstairs to find people to go out with. Clare and Audrey were still in their pajamas, so I hiked up another flight of stairs to visit Jane and Maria. They were all set to go out for Japanese food, so I got in on that action. We took two taxis, because Malia (from Japan), Moppy (from South America???), and Victoria (from England) came too. The restaurant was up behind a hotel and had a bridge, and screens, and seating areas with low tables and floor mats. There was a pit under the ... read more

I apologize for inundating everyone with an entry for every day, but so much happens! Maybe things will slow down in a week or two. I've managed to put together a breakfast that is not the least bit Chinese. Oatmeal with bananas and peanut butter. I can't believe I was able to do that here. I don't even miss cereal, because I eat so many carbs the rest of the day, and milk is a lot easier to come by than everyone said. Flavored milk is my new favorite thing. I like mango, pomegranate, strawberry, walnut, peanut, coconut, milk tea, and coffee milk. I'm sure there are more and, trust me, I will find them. Class was boring, boring, boring. Basic and speaking until noon. In speaking today we read the vocab and dialogues over and ... read more

I've been feeling sick every day when I wake up. I think it is dehydration. And every morning I have more mosquito bites. They itch a lot! Many people have tried talking to the attending staff in the dorm about bugs, but they leave the doors open all the time and don't do anything to deter them really. Basic class dragged on today. It was a review of grammar for me: 越来越。。。(Something becomes increasingly something). I skipped Reading Comprehension. I decided that Reading Comprehension is the one thing I can do on my own, using the text/workbook for that class. If I took Reading Comprehension on Thursdays, I would have ten hours of class on Thursdays, so I think it is a good decision to opt out of this one. It will protect my sanity. Maria, ... read more

After basic Chinese class, I had speaking. It was super easy. We started with the fundamentals. Hello! My name is Laura. I am American... It is good for practicing tones. Relish for lunch again. Had my favorite. 酸菜面。Sour veggie noodles. We went back to the dorm and I did homework. Then I went to the ping pong room to do yoga. After a half an hour or so the cleaning ladies started mopping around me, which was good because the floor in there is filthy. I had black stuff on my feet and knees and hands. Around 4, Clare, Audrey, Maria and I met Snow White, Audrey's Chinese friend from English corner, at the East gate, which is right next to our dorm. She took us to hotpot, the Sichuan specialty. The pot had sour broth ... read more

General and listening comprehension classes until noon, and then I was home free. We had lunch at Relish. My noodles were painfully spicy. I got a milk tea on the way back to the dorm to cut the pain. Qiang from English corner texted me. "I will come UpCoffee at 3 will meet you there." Or something along those lines. But I do not need a middle-aged hanger on who wants me to teach him English while I want to learn Chinese. So I didn't meet Qiang at Up in the Air Coffee. I went to a massive, four story shopping complex with Clare and Maria. It is a honeycomb of tiny shop/booths with clothes, wigs, accessories, shoes and bags. And you can bargain. I spent almost all of the money I had in my wallet ... read more

I woke up at 5:30 this morning. It was painful, but necessary. I had my Skype interview with the Pamplin Society board at 6:30 am, 3:30 pm Pacific time. Luckily, it was sans video. I felt bad about skyping while Sara(h) was still sleeping, but I had to do it this one time. The interview was short-- about twenty minutes. I hope I wasn't too blunt with my answers. I am not always very good at composing answers on the fly. We will see. I went to breakfast with Clare, Audrey, and Jeff at the hotel next to our dorm. I will not go their again. Their 包子 were metallic and their bean sprouts were bean sprouts. And it cost 10 块。 太贵了! The class I am in feels like a good fit. I understood almost ... read more

The day began with another outing for 包子, this time with Clare, Audrey, and Maria, and Gossip Girls. I had a red bean paste baozi and half of Audrey's meat and veggie one. She didn't like either, so got a piece of chocolate cake at a bakery instead. We watched several episodes on Clare and Audrey's wooden couch, which isn't too comfortable after a while. At four we went to the classroom building to check out our complete schedules for the semester, and once more found everything in Chinese. And only our Intensive Chinese language schedules-- nothing about our elective classes. Maria and I went back to her room and she interpreted the whole schedule for us. It involved some sort of strange key... and who knows what else. But I think we figured it out. ... read more

I went out for 包子 in the morning with Kate, Andrea, and Nick. We walked out the east gate near our dorm, all the way around to the west gate. We stopped at the university store to buy t-shirts. Andrea and I took a rickshaw back. Clare, Audrey, and I began the first season of Gossip Girls in their room. We took a break to visit our new favorite lunch spot, Relish, which sells noodles and dumplings only. It is very close to the dorm and the classroom building. We watched Gossip Girl until about four thirty. At five we met Audrey's new friends from the English corner, Snow White, Jimmy and Frank. They took us to a dumpling restaurant and taught us how to mix the dipping sauce with chili, garlic, soy, vinegar, and various ... read more
