Asia November 6th 2013

So as it happened we ended up in northern Thailand by circumstance rather than choice. We were planning on travelling to Laos from Siem Reap however typhoons from the previous month had done so much damage to the roads that a normal 8hr bus journey to cross the border to southern Laos, now took 2 days. Flights to Laos were over $300 so we doubled back and went off to Bangkok! The bus left at 2am and arrived at the border which we crossed by foot. The Thai team took over and a 3hr bus journey took 7hrs, conveniently stopping at every tourist tat shop on the way. They must have thought that us sleep deprived tourists were easy targets! When we arrived in Bangkok amongst massive political demonstrations, which closed the major roads and tourist ... read more

We left Vietnam early on Monday morning and crossed the Cambodian border by river. We were charged $25 instead of $20 for the visa process, which was the first of many times being ripped off in Cambodia. However our minibus dropped us in the centre on Phnom Penh where we arranged a tuk tuk tour to the Killing Fields for the next day. We travelled up with a lovely New Zealand couple, Gary and Jeanette who came with us the next day also. My first lunch unfortunately continued the theme of peanuts in most local dishes...even after a prolonged discussion with the waitress about peanut free food and getting her to write the cambodian down for no peanuts, she then suggested the royal amok, which was amok with peanuts...so it was pizza and burgers for the ... read more

We arrived in Hanoi on the 8th Oct after yet more problems with visas - even though Vietnam issues Visa on arrival, you require a letter from the Embassy to say that you are elligible! Mark saved the day finding a website that issued express letters within 30mins. We managed to find a computer to print out the emailed letter and go back to the desk to check in successfully - what a stress! After we finally got through immigration we went to find our preorganised hostel pick up to an empty forecourt. They hadn't sent anyone, but luckily there were a couple of guys going to the same hostel and we shared a taxi into town. On arrival at Hanoi Backpackers we landed right in the middle of the party scene, in a dorm room ... read more

So we are on our final night in Japan and we both absolutely loved it here. Today we had our most Japanese day of all. We started off visiting the Sumo Stadium and by luck there was a tournamont on for the Meiji Jinto Shrine with all the big names, yokazuna was competing with another 20 or so sumo wrestlers. It was fascinating to watch all the ceremonies and traditions. There was a minor tournament and the main even. The hours passed from 12.00 until at 4pm the champion was decided. Very exciting!! There was a little comedy sketch between tournaments also, brilliant! Then we visited Akibahara to see 2 shrines and visit a stand in Sushi restaurant. I still can't get over the chewiness of raw fish, but mark dived right in. I had a ... read more

I am going back in time now to the start of our trip. We landed in Dehli after several weeks of worrying about our visa and several applications, resulting in very little sleep and all my poor friends listening to my fretting! After arriving at Dehli at midnight, we had an early train from Dehli to Tordi Gahr, a small village, at 5am on Sunday 15th. This was a strong awakening to the standard of living and amount of poverty that was waiting us for the next 10 days. There were homeless people and a slums lining most of the track, with most of the men taking an early morning dump in the middle of the field next to the tracks! You couldn't help but look!! The train connected with a jeep for a 2 1/2hr ... read more
