Greetings from Liverpool! It's after midnight, and Andrew and I just got back from a great evening at the Cavern Club. It has been an incredible day. We are really tired, so will update during the train ride back to London tomorrow. Am posting one picture that exemplifies the day. See you tomorrow.... read more

History lesson: Today is the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta. Cool to be here on such a momentous day. Today was another bucket list day, as Andrew and I visited Brighton, the setting for The Who's Quadrophenia album. Despite some delays on the part of the British rail service at the start, the trip took less than an hour, and we were at the Brighton station by 1130. It was cool -- around 60 -- and cloudy at first, but as Andrew and I walked down the hill through the center of town (stopping briefly at Hobgoblin Music store, where Andrew played several guitars), the skies slowly cleared. By the time we reached the beach, it was a beautiful sunny day. The channel water was a beautiful blue, the sky was filled ... read more

London was chilly -- 55 to 65 all day -- and misty...the perfect London day! Andrew and I had coffee and breakfast at Esqiures Coffee, which looks like the British version of Starbucks. From there, it was off to our top priority and total bucket list item: the walk at Abbey Road. We were like kids at Christmas on the tube ride and walk. We walked down Grove End Road about 1/4 of a mile when we saw the Abbey Road street sign. We rounded the corner, and there it was: the iconic crosswalk where The Beatles shot that most famous photo. We just stood and stared at it, grinning and slapping each other on the back. Then it was time to get to work. Abbey Road is a pretty busy street, so we had to ... read more

Andrew and I woke to chilly rain in Brussels, but it soon passed. The weather was cool but sunny by the time we toured St. Michael's Cathedral and headed to the Grand Place, checking out shops and eating waffles. There was an even larger crowd of One Direction fans camped outside their hotel. Andrew bought a hat with the EU insignia to substitute for his lost OU hat. We also returned to the cafe from yesterday to get some coffee, and the same waitress was there. She recognized me and returned my Euro readers. Wish we could do the same for Andrew. On the subway to the train station, two young women from Manchester approached us to ask if we knew where the stadium was for the One Direction concert. We did not, but we did ... read more

Bon jour from Brussels! After a 3.5 hour train ride, we arrived in Brussels at 1330. We continued our theme from Frankfurt and we stepped out of the train station into the red light district. Andrew and I hiked through a number of interesting individuals into a much better area and found our hotel. And what a hotel! Hotelbloom! (that is the actual name) is a spectacular place that is a work of art. Creativity is everywhere. Each room is decorated by a different European artist, so every one is unique. I have posted a picture of the room but suggest you look up the website for the full effect. The room itself is huge and extremely comfortable. After settling in, we headed for the Grand Place, the center of the old town and main tourist ... read more

Andrew and I decided to stay in Frankfurt today. We have been on the move so much that it was nice to stay in the same place for another day. Today we toured the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History, which has been collecting specimens for almost 200 years. We spent 4 hours looking at incredible exhibit after exhibit -- several dozen dinosaur skeletons, fossils from the beginning of life on earth through today, Egyptian mummies, geological exhibits, and thousands of taxidermied animals and birds from around the world. It was really cool, and Andrew was in heaven. Taking advantage of the spectacular weather, we then wandered to Goethe University, where we found a cool open-air market: prepared food booths, produce, baked goods, books, etc. Had a nice lunch of white sausage, soft pretzels, and spicy mustard, ... read more

Guten tag, alles. First full day in Frankfurt got off to a very slow start. Andrew and I alternated hitting the snooze button til 0830. Even then, we moved slowly, leaving the hotel at 1030. Fortunately, we found a place up the street still serving breakfast, and it was sooo good: boiled egg, crossaint, heavier roll, cheese, butter, tomatoes, and espresso. From there, we took a walking tour of Frankfurt's main sights: Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral (beautiful and breathtaking), City Hall, St. Paul's Church, Haus Wertheim (built in the 1600s, it is the only house with traditional half-timbered construction to survive World War II), Customs Tower, Iron Bridge (cool views of the River Main as well as city), St. Leonhard Church, and Archeological Gardens. We toured the last, and it was incredible. The museum displayed artifacts found ... read more

Andrew and I enjoyed our last morning in Bern wandering the market, walking by the river, and riding the tram into west Bern just to see more of the city. While Bern may not have had the flash of Rome or Milan, it was beautiful (so green!), tranquil and relaxing. It was also sad to say goodbye to Laura and Olivia, but we are looking forward to the next adventure. As we entered Germany, noticed it looks a lot like Oklahoma...if Oklahoma had German architecture. Trees and grass looked the same. Many farms with fields of crops, pastures full of cows, and pens of horses. The ctrl key fell off my tablet keyboard. Don't know what you got til it's gone. We arrived in Frankfurt a little after 1700. What a contrast from Bern. It is ... read more

Hello from Bern! Andrew and I took it easy this morning, eating the bread, cheese, yogurt and fruit we bought last night at the grocery, then heading out about 0930. We stopped at a neighborhood we saw from the tram, then wandered til we found a cafe for coffee. Once again, we discovered that everything in Bern is really expensive, with a double espresso running $4.50 each. We were extra surprised that drinking the coffee at the cafe was $4.00 more than getting it to go...which we found out AFTER ordering and getting the bill. Lesson learned. The morning was very cool (a nice change) so we walked toward the center of town. We discovered a chess board on the walkway so stopped for a quick game. After Andrew beat me handily, we walked on to ... read more

Part 2 - We arrived in Bern about 1600 and went straight to our Airbnb apartment on the west central side of town. I was a little nervous about this next experiment, but our host Laura was absolutely delightful in welcoming us! She was an au pair in San Francisco so she spoke perfect English and understands Americans. The apartment is clean and comfortable, and our room is a perfect. Best of all, the WiFi is strong and consistent! Andrew and I are being very careful to not disturb Laura and her roommate. After getting settled, Andrew and I headed to Terrasse Restaurant in the center of town. We sat on a covered terrace next to the Aare River, which roars through Bern. Good thing we got there when we did because a storm rolled through, ... read more
