Čau, It's taken a long time for me to get around to writing this and letting you all know that I'm still alive and enjoying myself. That's exactly why it has taken so long - I've been enjoying myself so much. It's been wonderful to be back in the Czech Republic, I definitely made the right decision coming back here. I must have looked like such an idiot on the bus from Berlin to Prague. As we entered the Czech Republic, and later as we entered Prague, I was so happy and just sat there smiling to myself. I felt like I'd come home. Being here has been like when I used to live here, I definitely don't feel like a tourist. I really know Prague so well, probably much better than a lot of its ... read more

My return from Turkey brought with it quite a jolt back to reality and a fair bit of culture shock - indicated by the fact that my first thought as I was flying into Bratislava was “where are all the mosques?”. But, it also implied lots of exciting arrivals and reunifications and the end of travelling alone! After a long and exhausting journey from Istanbul, which involved: a bus trip where the driver nearly made us late to the Istanbul airport because he stopped to buy a packet of cigarettes and then drove round the city in circles for ages; a flight in the early hours of the morning, meaning that no sleep was had that night; somehow managing to get from the Bratislava airport to the bus station without any Slovakian money, thanks to the ... read more

Middle East » Turkey July 5th 2008

So after such a long silence, I guess some of you are wondering where I’ve been these past months. Well, where haven’t I been is more the question! Let’s begin from the start, shall I? It all started 4 months ago, in a small city called Brno, far, far away in the Czech Republic. There I boarded a bus which was to take me to Budapest, via Bratislava. In Budapest I waited at the deserted bus station for 2 hours in the middle of the night to catch my next bus to Romania, which would turn out to be a bit of a nerve-wracking bus trip, for several reasons! This was my first big trip by myself so I was quite nervous about a lot of things and sitting in a minibus with just the driver ... read more

After all of my recent international adventures, I thought it was about time I updated you all on how things are going in Prague. A lot has happened in the past couple of months, but I’ll start with the most important thing: my birthday! I had a wonderful, although not particularly Czech, birthday. The night before my birthday I went out for tea with a bunch of friends (all Australians, so I certainly wasn’t missing having an Australian birthday!). We went to a vegetarian restaurant in the city, which has become my favourite restaurant in Prague so far. The food there is awesome and it was especially great to be able to have a meal that actually had a variety of plants in it, not just potato! After many restaurant meals of cheese and potato, I ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest May 6th 2008

So, my second European holiday destination was Hungary, or more specifically, Budapest. I headed over there a few weekends ago with another Australian exchange student. I’d heard a lot of good things about Budapest, so my expectations were quite high and not only did it live up to those expectations, it far exceeded them. I loved Budapest, it was wonderful! I think part of the reason I enjoyed it so much in Budapest was the weather. I know talking about the weather is a bit mundane, but to go from Prague, where it’s been averaging about 15oC and is often cloudy or raining, to Budapest, where it was sunny and 25 oC all weekend, it was fantastic! It was such a novelty to be able to walk around without a coat or even a jumper! And ... read more

Guten Tag meine Damen und Herren, So, the first of my many planned trips around Europe this year was to Berlin on the Easter long weekend. I headed over there with an Austrian friend, although she was in Hamburg for half the time we were there. Despite my previous disinterest in anything German, I really enjoyed being there, much more than I had expected I would. My first impression of Germany, as we were travelling from Prague to Berlin on the train, was that it looks just like a more upmarket version of the Czech Republic! The buildings and cities looked pretty much the same, but they’re just looked after much better. Although we were travelling through East Germany, apparently it’s different in West Germany. I pretty much spent my weekend being the stereotypical tourist in ... read more

Ahoj! Hope that you're all doing well and for those of you in Australia, specifically Adelaide, that you're managing to survive the heat! This blog is gonna be quite long, sorry. I've been meaning to write for ages but have been sick for a while and have been incredibly busy with lots of different things. Anyway, it's here now, hope you all enjoy it and that it answers some of the questions I've been getting. Uni’s definitely in full swing here now, which is partly why I've been so busy - everything’s crept up on me and then all of a sudden I seemed to have a ridiculous amount of work to do. Although I admit I have started to slip back into my usual study habits of doing the bare minimum and leaving everything to ... read more

Well, I’ve been in Prague just over a week now and what a week it has been! It’s been an incredibly difficult and frustrating week but also very rewarding and I’ve already done lots of interesting things here. Everything here got off to a bit of a bad start basically from the minute I arrived at the airport. Getting from the airport to my dormitory was a minor disaster, mainly because of lack of communication. I took public transport to get there - ended up waiting an hour for a bus that was never going to come because it doesn’t run on weekends, which the lady at the information desk conveniently failed to tell me. I also ended up getting lost on the way and with no way of contacting anyone and no-one around who spoke ... read more
