Hi everyone, how's things? hope things are fine and/or dandy. I guess it's time for another entry because I need to tap it all out before I forget. I don't actually take notes (what kind of writer am I really??), so I need to tell you now before fatigue and/or inebriation wipes it clean from my memory. After Hamburg, I've travelled 3 hours south to Berlin. I'll be honest right here and now. I dig Berlin. Berlin is sehr schön, Ich liebe Berlin. Through all my travels to date, I have not come across a city that has really grabbed me the way Berlin has. I admire its history, its lack of pretention and I love the liberal ways of Berliners. That, and they have a great music scene :) Where to begin, where to begin?? ... read more

Conversation at a Doner Kebab store in Hamburg (In the little german I understood, amd with english subtitles for your convenience) Shopowner: Guten Tag (Good day.) Me: Hallo. Ein hähnchen kebab bitte (hello. A Chicken Kebab please). Shopowner: blah blah blah mit alles? (do you want it with everything?) Me: Nein. Keine das pointing to onion (No, none that) Shopowner (quizzical look): mit alles? (with everything?) Me: er Ja, mit alles (er yeah, with everything.) Shopowner: blah blah blah blah kommst du? (So where do you come from?) Me: Ich komme aus Australia (I come from Australia). Shopowner: Australia? blah blah blah sprechen deutsch im Australia? (Australia? don't they speak German in Australia?) Me: Nein, aus Australia, nicht Österreich. Mit Kangaroos und Koalas. (No, from Australia, not Austria. With Kangaroos and Koalas). Shopowner: Also,... read more

Hi Everyone, Hope things are fine and dandy. After Oslo, I have been making my trek to the west coast of Norway to the coastal town of Bergen. Bergen is a good 6 hour train ride from Oslo, which can sometimes be a day spent not doing a great deal but reacquainting yourself with your favourite albums, which are kind of like old friends. Each album or song is kind of like that old buddy that reminds you of that moment when you were together. For instance, everytime I listen to 'Is this love?' by Bob Marley, it takes me back to Sintra in Portugal with Lisa and ... read more

Hi Everybody, how's things? Hope you're all well and good wherever in the world you happen to be. After Stockholm, I've headed west into Norway and stopped at Oslo and Bergen. I caught the intercity train from Stockholm to Oslo, and the person who sold me my ticket was a lovely person who knew I was after the cheapest ticket possible, and he duly found me a seat for a mere 255 swedish kroners (less than 30euros). Bless his soul. What he forgot to tell me was that I'd be sitting on a train for 6 hours in the 'Pets allowed' section, which meant travelling amongst a few dogs, and also numerous families with rowdy little kids (And no, I'm not casting any aspersions as to what the definition of a pet is). You can only ... read more

Hi everyone, I'm in Bergen, on the west coast of Norway at the moment. The weather is in the mild low 20s here and slightly overcast. This is in contrast to the last 2 weeks I've had in scandinavia where it's been sunny and high 20s. The midnight sun also means that not much sleep is to be had, as the sun sets at around 11, and is back up at around 3am :) Like a postcard that you've just received in the mail, my email is about things that happened a week ago in Stockholm. Enjoy :) Conversation I had with a fellow traveller in front of a fast food caravan: Amy: You know you're eating bits of Rudolph there? Me: Yeah, but who knew he'd be so tender and succulent.... Poor Amy is vegetarian, ... read more

Hi Everyone, If you're wondering why I'm in front of the pc so much, it's not because Stockholm is boring, it's just that I've got a cold. Probably from going to too many festivals :) The pills are doing wonders though...(thanks mum!) Roskilde festival, as its name may suggest, is held in the town of Roskilde, around half an hour out of Copenhagen. It's a 4 day festival, which is probably a shade long. I think 3 days was enough for me, but that being said, I've had a stretch of 10 days where I spent 7 of them at a festival. For the benefit of all the festival-going folks back home in Melbourne, Roskilde is: - 'big day out', but multiply that by 4 days - then combine it with the camping of Falls festival, ... read more

Hi everyone, how's things? Hope everyone had a chance to catch Live8 over the weekend, wherever in the world you happen to be. After Glastonbury, I've made it to Copenhagen to begin my traverse of Scandinavia (and to attend Roskilde festival of course!). I'm kind of excited and yet still have trepidations at the moment as I'm backpacking solo now. I do know I'm being spoilt though as the youth hostel I'm staying at is all shiny and new with lots of cool facilities. I'll let you know how I'm faring after I've been to a few dank and dingy ones. Apart from having super-swish youth hostels for travellers (gee, how was that for a segue??), Copenhagen is actually a really cool place to visit. Copenhagen is very well planned out, clean, safe, they have lots ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London June 27th 2005

Hi Guys, I've made it back to London after the Glastonbury experience. It was wonderful, but I am absolutely knackered. My feet are killing me after 3 days standing 12 hours or so in a pair of wellies (gumboots if you're not in the UK). The festival has a really great vibe and atmosphere simply because there are so many people that are in the spirit of things. People are really there to enjoy the music and other acts, and are always willing to help each other out and look after each other. There's a lot of peace and love in the atmosphere. The weather was gorgeous leading up to the festival, but on friday morning at around 5am in the morning, it came bucketing down. Apparently lightning struck a couple of stages and one of ... read more

Evening everyone, how's things? hope everyone is fine and/or dandy. 'Dear diary, this will be my last entry for a while as I'm heading to Glastonbury tomorrow....' Yes it's true. I'm taking the train to Glastonbury tomorrow to start the first of 3 (potentially 4)festivals for the summer. Glastonbury will be the big one as it holds the biggest mystique for me. The line up is pretty special, but more about that later. In the meantime, I'll tell you more about Spain. After Portugal, we headed through the southern parts of Spain, predominantly through Andalucia (Seville and Granada) before going north to Valencia and finally Barcelona. Coming out of Portugal and towards Seville, you can notice the huge rock and desert areas that come straight out of some spaghetti western or road movie. The sandy desolation ... read more

Hi Everyone, This one goes to a shortened list today for professional reasons (I feel so hypocritical), so guys at dorcas st, please don't distribute this one all willy nilly :) I am back in london now, and it feels odd. I thought it would feel more familiar but it feels as foreign as anywhere else I've been thus far. But I have consolation in being shacked up at the hilton now. Gosh life is difficult sometimes.... Before I continue about my time in Portugal, I do have a dilemma that I hope a few will be able to assist with. I'm going to Glastonbury next week, and more and more people are telling me I need to rough it, otherwise I won't be getting the full experience. Logistics of it I can cover no worries, ... read more
