Italy Day 4, Friday, October 7, Radicofani and Chianciano We began the day by asking Ben to make a Doctor appointment for Dave who may have pink eye. The entire group declined the offer of an early morning half hour walking tour of Chianciano since it was cold and raining. At 9am we boarded the bus to Val d' Orcia, a World Heritage site. This valley of low lying hills under an extinct volcano is a perfect unison of man and nature. On our way we passed the large 15th century estate called La Foce, once owned by an American woman who during WWII hid Jews and food from the Nazis. A WWII diary book about her life entitled War in Val d’Orcia by Iris Ortega is set on this estate. Castelluccio, a medieval castle sits ... read more

Italy Day 3, Thursday, October 6, Rome to Pieve and Chianciano After the Hotel Albani’s elaborate breakfast offerings of eggs, ham, bacon, cheeses, yogurts, breads, pastries, fruit of all kinds, cereals and delicious coffees we chose our selections and prepared for the rainy travel day ahead. Our original party of four, Donna, John, my husband Dave and I settled into our seats on the bus along with 27 other Grand Circle tourists and watched Rome with its unique orange colored stone buildings pass away on our journey north to Tuscany. The color of stone used in buildings throughout Italy is as unique to the area as the landscape they sit on. Elegant and tall Maritime Pines punctuated the urban landscape. These tall stately pines with their dark green umbrella tops are as much a part of ... read more

Italy Day 1, Tuesday, October 4 On Tuesday, October 4, my husband and I began our 3 1/2 week tour of Italy with our good friends Donna and John, also from Sarasota, FL. The tour, organized by Grand Circle Travel, will cover a week in Tuscany, a week in the Amalfi Coast and ending with a tour of Rome. Our flight was quite convenient allowing us to travel from our own SRQ airport with a lunch stop in Atlanta, before boarding our 7pm flight to Rome. After dinner, some celebratory wine and two on-flight movies, I finally dozed a bit on our 9 hour flight. Italy Day 2, Wednesday, October 5, Rome We were greeted by a Grand Circle driver at the Rome-Fiumicino Airport around 10:30 AM Roman time on Tuesday, October 5. I was tempted ... read more

10/22/15 Little River, Mendocino, Fort Bragg, Benbow Inn, Garberville Dave and I missed the allegedly spectacular meteor shower in the night at Heritage House in Little River because we were too tired to stay up until 3AM. We didn’t lose any sleep over it. We later heard that the weather was too cloudy and we wouldn’t have been able to see much anyway. We woke to a chilly morning with brilliant blue skies promising to be a gorgeous day. Wanting to enjoy as much as we could of the luxury resort we first enjoyed our coffee in front a our fireplace and then spent about an hour walking to the cliff and gazebo enjoying the ambiance and as we tried to figure out where the various movie sets were located over the resort’s 37 acres. Since ... read more

10/15/15 Day 8 Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay, Hearst Castle, Cambria, San Simeon Early this morning we enjoyed some fresh cappuccino provided by our hostess on the little terrace at our Santa Barbara Airbnb, accompanied by the delicious rugelach we bought the night before at Trader Joe’s. The morning was cool after last night's much needed rain so we packed up and drove the Alameda Padre Sierra or APS. The APS or “The Riviera” (as it is locally known due to its resemblance to slopes along the Mediterranean coasts of France and Italy) separates the Upper and Lower Riviera. The homes in the Upper Riviera have the best ocean views and generally have larger homes however I would take any home perched on these hills overlooking Santa Barbara and the Pacific if I could ... read more

Our trip began the first week of October, 2015 in San Diego, CA.Two months before our departure my husband had a serious fall that resulted in brain surgery. Six days before we left I had knee surgery. It was time for a vacation! We flew into San Diego to share in the joy of my nephew’s wedding on Sunday, October 11. My husband, sister, her husband and I enjoyed our first Airbnb in Ocean Beach (OB), a quiet little town easily accessible to beaches and the city of San Diego, without the hassle of parking and driving congestion in the city. This began the first week of my husband’s and my three week long coastal California vacation. 10/8/15 Day 1 Ocean Beach and San Diego, California On our first night we all decided to drive into ... read more

October 7, 2014 We were up well before breakfast and decided to take advantage of the hot tub just outside the B&B. We donned the provided robes and slippers and took their towels outside with us to soak in the hot jacuzzi. We were thoughtfully given a bottle of water to bring along with us. It was a marvelous way to wake up! We would have enjoyed the hot tub the previous night under the stars but we were too tired from our day’s journey and the roaring fire seemed far too appealing. The next morning breakfast was served inside with a view to the porch and busy bird feeders. We had an option to eat on the porch but it was too chilly for us. There is good coffee and tea available but what rocked ... read more

October 6 Our last day in the Telluride area. We drove down from Sawpit Mesa into Telluride for lunch at the Butcher & Baker Cafe. This place is always busy with locals and that, to me, is a sign of good food. We have eaten in many restaurants in Telluride but this one remains a favorite for good simple food, organic and fresh, with local veg, home baked breads and soups and especially yummy small plates and sides. We sat inside but there is outside seating with that fabulous Telluride view on Main Street. We return to eat here every time we visit Telluride. Dave and I had the privilege of babysitting my one-year-old birthday boy, so we took advantage of the free gondola for a ride up to Mountain Village. Afterwards we walked over to ... read more

October 4, 2014 Today is the day for the birthday boy to celebrate his first year with friends at the Ouray Hot Springs in picturesque Ouray, CO. No matter the weather, the 88-106 degree natural temperatures in the hot springs pool can warm your bones if not your soul. And how lovely to soak outside with steam rising around you while you gaze at snow capped mountains! This was the perfect setting for a birthday celebration. The Ute Indians thought so too. They came here years before for the spiritual qualities attributed to the hot springs waters. After the party we drove into the center of Ouray, also known as “Little Switzerland”, for lunch and then a requisite stop at Mouse’s Chocolates and Coffee, because, well, why not? Ouray, sandwiched in a canyon in the San ... read more

October 3, 2014 After a couple of days of hiking and birthday celebrations on Sawpit Mesa we all drove down into the tiny canyon town of Telluride to the wonderful Farmer’s Market. Telluride is a historic Victorian mining town set in a box canyon with echoes of gold, lead, copper and silver mines and cowboys, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (who began his career robbing the San Miguel Valley Bank), and of course Indians. The Native American Ute tribe lived in this area long before the miners and cowboys arrived in the mid 1800s and many Ute still live in the area. Over the years, mining took its toll with men working at challenging elevations of between 10,000 and 12,000 feet, harsh weather conditions, dangerous roads and substandard housing. After the mines closed a ... read more
