Hey everyone! The new post is up: https://www.iesabroad.org/study-abroad/blogs/kmcgeepugetsoundedu/all-once Due to being crazy bogged down in work this weekend, the next post will likely be a reflection about one particular aspect of living in Shanghai. For now though, I will leave you with photos that I have from a study break trip I took to visit the art district of Shanghai, known as M50. On that note, I should get back to that essay I am in the middle of writing. Until next time!... read more

Hey everyone! The new post is up: https://www.iesabroad.org/study-abroad/blogs/kmcgeepugetsoundedu/park-people I had forgotten how much I like lists until I got to writing this past post and the one before it. They're just so easy to organize and to visually see what is happening, and they keep me from rambling too much. So yes, here is another list. Also expect at least one more before I end this series... Hope everyone is having a lovely week! Until next time!... read more

Hey everyone! The new post is up! https://www.iesabroad.org/study-abroad/blogs/kmcgeepugetsoundedu/its-health-thing In other news, I had a very interesting encounter this week. I went to the supermarket with my host mother one evening after dinner, and she decided that she needed to buy hair dye. So we get to the hair dye isle, and she immediately begins conversing with this other woman (around the same age; 50s-60s), about which brand is best. Eventually one of the workers comes over to help them, and they decide to each buy one of the same brand; I'm pretty sure there was a 買一送一 (Mǎi yī sòng yī - buy one, get one) or some sort of sale going on. So we go to the checkout and they split the price of the hair dyes, etc. As we are walking out of the ... read more

Hey everyone! The new post is up: https://www.iesabroad.org/study-abroad/blogs/kmcgeepugetsoundedu/hong-kong-neither-china-nor-west As you all may or may not know, I spent last weekend in Hanoi, Vietnam, which was a blast. In fact, I enjoyed it much more than I had thought I would, which was definitely a pleasant surprise! The one qualm that I had about Hanoi was how it was crawling with foreigners. Before leaving, I was expecting to be in a city much less developed than Beijing or Shanghai, where we would be some of the only foreigners. Instead, I wouldn't be surprised if someone told me that I saw the same number of tourists as I did Vietnamese. It was absolutely crazy, especially having come from a city where foreigners, while not rare, are quite easy to pick out of a crowd. In Hanoi, it felt ... read more

Hey everyone! The new blog is up! Sorry I missed last week; my friend Sabrina came from Japan to visit me at the beginning of this past week so I spent last weekend writing lots of essays, trying to get ahead on the homework for the week. Anyways, it was really great getting to hang out with her, and we had a lot of good conversations about how study abroad has changed our perspectives on the world and life in general. https://www.iesabroad.org/study-abroad/blogs/kmcgeepugetsoundedu/importance-study-abroad In other news, last weekend one of my friends and I tried to buy some glasses. We heard of a place from another friend where we could find tons of shops, which always means bargaining is possible. We went on Friday and at the third shop after trying on lots of different pairs, found ... read more

Hey everyone! Yay, I managed to write this one on time! One of the reasons I really like living in China is because I spend so much time around the people and surrounded by the culture that I am able notice some of the more subtle cultural changes that I would be lost on a tourist. Bargaining is just one example. https://www.iesabroad.org/study-abroad/blogs/kmcgeepugetsoundedu/bargaining-dying-art Another example of cultural change is the gradual change from pushing and shoving to waiting in a line. This one is still on the rise, and is more commonly seen amongst the younger generations, but it is happening. For example, every morning during rush hour I ride the subway four stops from my home to the apartments where everyone else lives. Over the last few weeks I have noticed that the subway continuously gets ... read more

Hey everyone, I'm really really sorry about how late this is... I managed to write the actual post by the middle of the week, but then I had to wait for it to be approved and in the meantime got caught up in schoolwork and stuff. Sorry! As a result, (fingers crossed) the next post will be up here by the beginning of next week. Shooting for Monday. But here is the link for last week's post: https://www.iesabroad.org/study-abroad/blogs/kmcgeepugetsoundedu/exploring-tongli-watertown We had a nice day trip to Tongli last Friday, and then on Saturday I met up with my Chinese class (all three of us, plus our teacher) made our way over to 人民廣場 (Rénmín guǎngchǎng - People's Square) to check out the 相親角 (Xiāngqīn jiǎo - lit. blind date corner, although it is often called the marriage ... read more

Hey everyone! Man, I'm sorry about the late posts! I'm still figuring out my schedule and all that, but my Tuesdays are looking pretty good. Class from 9 am to 9:30 pm. Yep, sounds like fun! Oh, and don't forget about the 45-60 minute commute to Fudan University in the middle of the day! The saving grace? Fudan supposedly has cute guys, and I will have a two hour break between my two classes there to people watch. Shhh! ;) https://www.iesabroad.org/study-abroad/blogs/kmcgeepugetsoundedu/%C4%81y%C3%AD-door-broken Anyways, that’s all I have for now. Until next time!... read more
