Hey everyone, Officially finished my second week of teaching! For the most part, so far so good, although I did encounter my first actually “bad” class. As I believe I mentioned last time, I teach elementary through middle school-edged kids. One of my (I believe) sixth grade (which is still elementary here; middle school is seventh and eighth graders) classes is four girls and one boy. From the very beginning, getting the girls in this class to concentrate was definitely more difficult than other classes-and that was when my role was literally only to play an audio file so they could do dictation work. The second week, Mpho (the other foreign teacher) and I were given more independence for some of our older classes in terms of teaching and lesson planning. So instead of simply doing ... read more

Hey everyone, So 31 hours after leaving my house, I finally made it to my apartment on Thursday afternoon. Three planes and one very long bus ride, it was definitely the longest amount of straight traveling that I've ever done at once, and I was so glad once I actually arrived. On the way here, the questions what have you done? What are you thinking? What is wrong with you? You REALLY don't speak Korean, why didn't you just go to China? Then you would at least be able to get around. Crossed my mind no fewer than 20 times each. While I was still in China and the US, coming to Korea was just this vague adventure. And I honestly do still believe that “challenge” and “culture shock” are just synonyms of “adventure.” But once ... read more

Hey everyone, It’s official! I will be leaving for South Korea next Tuesday, and after 22 hours of traveling (about 16.5 of which will be spent actually sitting on airplanes), I will arrive in Seoul on Thursday. Wow that’s a lot of travel time, considering I only flew back from China two weeks ago. Guess I’m trying to challenge Mom in the “most time spent on a plane” category. It feels seriously crazy that this is actually happening, though. I feel like I’ve been trying to keep this more between family and friends for so long, worried that it wouldn’t actually happen that it feels weird talking about it here and on Facebook. To be honest, for a while there I was pretty certain it wouldn’t pan out, and I wouldn’t be offered a job at ... read more

Hey everyone, So I’ve officially made it back to the US! However, before I go more into final thoughts about the experience and into detail on what my next plans are, I want to take this moment to spend some time considering an experience I had that left an impression. One of the things that I was really excited to do while I was in Xi’an that I had not gotten a chance to do while in Japan, Korea, or China on my last trip was to visit a cat cafe. Although I heard that California just opened its first one a year or so ago, they’ve been quite popular in East Asia for some time now. There are tons of pictures and images on the internet from people who have been to these cat cafes, ... read more

Hey everyone, For the weekend following our group trip to the villages and mountain, one of my friends and I thought a weekend trip to Beijing sounded like a great idea. So we bought our high-speed train tickets, about $80USD one way, booked a hostel, and planned to leave campus about 1.5-2 hours before the train left. However, we miscalculated. First, we decided to make a quick stop at the store for some snacks to eat on the 5 hour train ride, so we left a bit later than originally planned. Then, we hadn’t accounted for the half hour walk to the subway stop, thinking that it was a lot closer from campus than it really is (we don’t ride the subway often here; there are only two lines, and they’re just perpendicular straight lines, so ... read more

Hey everyone! Wow it’s been a while. And the crazy part is that it’s been so long simply because I’ve been so incredibly busy; I haven’t even gotten to sleep in once in the last three weeks or so. My adventures started with a three-day program-organized culture trip to two different villages and a mountain. The first village was an agricultural village, and students were split into groups in order to experience firsthand some of the various agricultural practices. Some of us picked peaches and plums, some took care of the farm animals, such as donkeys and rabbits, some learned about the traditional forms of fieldwork, and some of us picked vegetables for dumplings. After making said dumplings and eating simple traditional Chinese dishes for lunch, we played some traditional games to finish out the day. ... read more

Hey everyone! I feel like I always forget how busy I am on these types of programs. It's great, because I'm always doing something, and there's really no time to be bored, but sometimes it can be difficult because there's also very little time to rest and taking time out of the day to just relax always makes me feel guilty for not getting the most out of my time here. It's definitely a lose-lose situation in terms of time. Last Monday, our group took a field trip an hour or two out of the city to visit a primary/secondary school. This school wasn't just any primary/secondary school, however. The school we visited is called 留守兒童學校 Liúshǒu értóng xuéxiào, a boarding school that caters primarily to the area's "left behind children." That is, the majority of ... read more

Hey everyone! 好久不見!(hǎojiǔ bùjiàn — long time no see!) Well, it’s been a couple of years since I studied abroad, and I’ve officially graduated from college. I’m a real person now! Actually, I’m not sure how I feel about that part. Like a real person job? Yikes. For that reason, I’m planning on taking a year or two to teach English (hopefully in South Korea). I still don’t have a job, but hopefully that will change in the next month or so. Anyways, as many of you already know, I am currently in Xi’an, China, on an intensive study abroad program. I am studying through the Critical Language Scholarship, which is funded by the US Department of State*. I arrived in Xi’an last Friday, and have now officially completed my first week of classes. In addition, ... read more

Hey everyone! Before setting off for my year abroad, I was a little wary about living in major cities for the year. I was afraid that they would all be like New York City: dirty, smelly, and overcrowded. Most of them were. But during my time living in these cities (Seoul, Taichung, Beijing, and Shanghai) I discovered that there are definitely benefits to living in major cities that can make them worth suffering through the dirty smelliness of major cities. One such perk (and arguably the biggest one) is the food, which is what I want to talk about here. Shanghai in particular was amazing when it came to food. When Americans talk about Chinese food, most people are thinking about what is a very Americanized version of Chinese food: orange chicken, General Tso's, sweet and ... read more
