We got up on Saturday and packed up. We kept 2 rooms for late check-out and then headed out for a lovely lunch at Mom Tris, a resort down the road from ours. It was a lovely ending to our holiday...our table overlooked the Adaman Bay and the Katathani resort and we enjoyed the lovely ocean breezes and view. We headed to the airport and bade farewell to our guide, Kom. Jim was with us and we said farewell and many thanks to our wonderful friend. It was so great to spend time with him and to see him so happy. He went to so much work to organize this trip for us, and we are not really sure how we will ever repay him. We flew to Hong Kong, and said farewell to the Brandts ... read more

We arrived in Phuket and met our guide, Kom, at the airport. We also met Amy, who is the manager of Destination Asia, Phuket, and is from Edmonton. The traffic is certainly not as crazy as Bangkok, and we passed rubber tree and pineapple plantations along the way. The landscape is very tropical and reminds us of Mexico. We checked into our resort, the Katathani, which is on Kata Beach. A lovely place with a gorgeous beach and very lush grounds. We met for a drink at the beach bar, and then headed for dinner at a local restaurant close to the resort. I had chicken fingers and fries....and they were delicious!! Nice to have a change from Asian food. On Monday we spent the day on the beach, which is not owned by the resort, ... read more

We had an early wake-up at 5 am, and headed out for our tour of the Bridge over the River Kwai. We arrived at Kanchanaburi, and visited the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre. Our guide was Andrew Snow, whose father was a POW and worked on the railroad, and died when Andrew was 4 years old. It was quite moving to see what the POW’s endured as they were forced to build the railroad. After a tea break, we walked across the street to the war cemetery, where we laid a bouquet of flowers on the graves of the 6 Canadian soldiers buried there. We then drove to the Chungkai War Cemetery, which is the original POW cemetery that was attached to the Chungkai Camp. We also laid flowers on the one grave of a Canadian there. Both ... read more

We left Chaing Mai and flew to Bangkok, the City of Angels. We are getting pretty efficient as a group when we fly!! We are usually seated all in the same area of the plane, and getting used to the boxed lunches and Asian airline efficiency. I have also enjoyed the classical music that they play while flying...a welcome change to mini tvs at every seat. Our suitcases are packed to capacity....so we will all need to buy another suitcase for the trip home! Jim and our guide, May, met us at the airport. We went directly to the tailors, where we all went on a shopping frenzy.....choosing fabrics and styles for our custom made clothes. Lots of staff to help us....a very unique process that most of us had never experienced. We will have 2 ... read more

We left Siem Reap and flew to Chiang Mai via Bangkok. We met our guide, Jeff, and we travel in a large bus with Nemo painted on the outside and white silk curtains on the inside! In Thailand they drive on the left side of the road. We checked into our hotel, the RatiLanna Spa Resort. It is owned by the family of Jim’s partner, Or, and they very generously upgraded us to a deluxe suite. Wow!! A large living room with gorgeous furniture and flatscreen tv, a dining room seating 4 with mini-bar, a huge bedroom with king sized canopy bed, a dressing room, and a huge bathroom with large jacuzzi tub, shower, flat screen tv above the tub, and a water fountain in an enclosure beside the tub. The balcony is huge, with a ... read more

We had an early flight out of Saigon, and arrived in Siem Reap. We experienced our first fingerprint scan at immigration....very interesting. We met our guide, Khet, a very gentle, smiling man. Siem Reap is certainly much more laid back than Siagon. We stopped for a short visit at the market, where we were amazed by the local vendors, all crowded into a large area, selling everything from fish to scarves! It was very dark in some of the market, so a bit hard to shop, but the vendors were happy to use their cell phone light to show you their wares!! After a bit of a wait, we checked into our hotel, LeMeridien. The rooms have shutters into the bathroom, and lovely wood all through the hotel. We headed out on a tour of Angkor ... read more

We arrived in Saigon on Tuesday night and we were met by our guide, Quinny. We noticed a distinct difference between Hanoi and Saigon right away....still lots of scooters, but traffic is much more orderly. Got to our hotel, the Rennaisance Riverside, and Jim was waiting for us. We headed out for drinks at the Rex Hotel, on the rooftop, where the U.S. military held it’s press briefings during the Vietnam war. A distinct change in temperature...quite hot and humid...a welcome change! Wed morning we met to head out on our tour of Saigon. First, the Presidential Palace, which is now a museum. It is where the South Vietnam government surrendered on April 30, 1975, with the famous picture of the tanks crashing through the front gates. It seemed like time had stood still....everything is as ... read more

The Millars arrived on Sunday night, so we are now 14. We left Hanoi on Monday morning and headed to Halong Bay. Lots of traffic with scooters carrying everything from babies to water buffalo!! Had a chance to see lots of rice fields and lovely green crops...often being ploughed by the water buffalo and hand watered with 2 large watering cans carried on poles on their shoulders. We stopped at a craft shop where disabled people work. Lots of ceramics, embroidered pictures, laquer, silk clothing, and a coffee shop. Had some Vietnamese coffee...very strong, with condensed milk. Arrived in Halong and boarded the tender to get to our junk boat - Bhaya Classic. As we boarded, the staff dropped rose petals down on us, and greeted us with warm towels and a delicious welcome drink. After ... read more

On Saturday night we left Hong Kong and flew 2 hours to Hanoi. We were held up quite awhile in Hanoi airport dealing with the visas...have never seen such inefficiency in my life!! We were met by Houng (pronounced like Juan), our guide and checked into the Hilton Hanoi Opera. Fantastic room with a lovely gift and fruit plate awaiting us...we are so spoiled!! Got together for a few drinks with the 5 other couples and met again in the morning at the breakfast buffet. So many choices...definitely my favorite meal of the day!! Everyone enjoying the traditional Vietnamese Pho (prounounced FUR)....hot broth with meat, noodles and veggies. After breakfast we all got into our rickshaws......what a sight as we set out with a line of 14 rickshaws travelling through the busy streets!! Seemed very scary ... read more
