Over the course of my life I’ve developed this theory that things, whatever they may be, life, health, sports, work, are always striving for homeostasis. This concept was introduced to me, and don’t all laugh at once, through the Pauly Shore movie, Biodome. Yes, Pauly Shore… and yes, I’ve seen it more than once. It’s not my favorite movie by any means, but you know those Sunday afternoons on TBS when the station runs those movies no one really cares about, that’s a golden time to catch a movie like Biodome. A quick synopsis of the movie, to fill in the non-Shore diehards out there, is that two hoodlums find their way into a domed, self contained environmental experiment meant to sustain life on another planet. Well, they screw around, I think they threw a party ... read more

I’m afraid this blog is going to have nothing to do with Korea, what kind of unfamiliar situations, or observations that we are succumbing to over here. My apologies for this. Although, in a round about way, the topic of this blog is about something that is happening to me while I’m in Korea; so if you can stretch your mind, it fits. This writing is more about something that has been affecting me, weighing on me, this week, while in Korea. Now, I don’t consider myself a writer any more than I think of myself as a politician or an entertainer. I have numerous journals that seem to always fall by the wayside when things of more importance, as they always seem to, creep in. I am writing these words as a refuge, as a ... read more

We find ourselves sitting in a precarious position stuck between seeing the holidays come and go, an interesting feeling half a world away from anything or anyone, having the weather representative of everything people hate about winter with its bitter cold temperatures with very little snow to enjoy, and staring at the calendar counting down the days until we depart for the Philippines. After finagling all of the plans, payment methods, email conversations with far too many people, we have most of our trip taken care of and paid for. With our bankbooks getting thinner, and for a good reason we’d like to think, we have tried our dandiest to save some coin (which may also be an excuse to stay out of the coldest weather imaginable). It hasn’t stopped us from checking out some cool ... read more

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and enjoyed the tune. It definitely didn’t seem like the holidays here, both Cass and I only had one day off school and it was back to the grindstone for us. Many different and silly things have happened in the last week or so. To encompass everything, this entry will consist of a conglomeration of short stories for your holiday reading enjoyment. DEATHBED I have a theory that being trained in the slightest of athletic training in college gives me the proper authority to self diagnose things our modern health care tests and machines may not have the power to do so. In my mind, it is totally logical; in my mind that is… This started my bout with mercury poisoning (self diagnosed… remember). Basically since my plane landed ... read more

I had a brief conversation with my good friend Todd Carter the other day. He is often inspiring… and inspiration knows no distance or recognizes any political boundaries. But without spoiling anything for anyone, I invite you all to the world premier of my latest little ditty regarding this crazy and beautiful Korean life I find myself in. The following is a phonetic pronunciation of what you are about to hear, and, to the best of my very limited ability, an English translation. Please click on the video above, turn up the volume on your computer, sit back, relax, and enjoy the world as we have come to know it… Gamsa hamnida Carter, Todd Song Sing Nim. I knew about this trip for a few weeks, and as soon as I deciphered what it truly existed as, I knew before hand that it had some serious blogworthiness. It certainly didn’t let me down. A few weeks ago, you may remember, my school had staff field trip to the East Sea that involved some poisonous fish eating, some even more nearly poisonous soju drinking, and some Vegas ready karaoke stylings on the bus ride home. December 12th saw the first time I would attend a school staff overnight trip. This eliminates the one true roadblock to setting aside all reservation, getting home safely. I believe the sign displayed on the bus windshield says something along the lines of “Jumbong Staff Friendship Trip.” It comes with what I learned were, mixed reviews from the staff, ... read more

We find ourselves waist deep in one of those ‘tweener seasons. Almost everywhere has this phenomenon at one time or another; the time of year that is no longer the cool clear days of endless autumn color on the mountainsides, yet you cannot go out and enjoy the recreation that the winter provides you. It’s not one or the other- it’s ‘tween both seasons, hence my name for it. Because of this, things have kind of slowed down for us over here. We aren’t braving the biting cold to explore the temples or parks of the area as much as we have been. We are, however, having a blast singing our heads off at the No Rae Bongs and spending more time getting to know our fellow native English speakers. As far as news goes, My ... read more

Hello Everyone!! By request...I am writing my very own blog :) We have been in Korea for almost two months and I love it! I love the food, I love the people, and I love not having to drive. When we arrived in fall, it was beautiful, the leaves were red and gold, and the season lasted forever (compared to Montana). Around Yeoju there are many mountains, smaller than Montana, but still beautiful. They are covered in trees so fall was especially beautiful. In the last few weeks, all of the leaves have fallen and it has started to get pretty darn cold. Every Morning, I wait on the corner near our apartment for the "Head Teacher" from my school to pick me up. She is very nice and speaks some English, but our conversation is ... read more

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays of the year. People gather, families reunite from long distances and after much time; the idea behind the celebration is to simply give thanks and count blessings that have been bestowed upon you this passed year. Besides, beneath the awkward familial situations, the rising tensions from the kitchen, the one true and ever present mission is to set all those aside and eat as much great food as humanly possible. What’s not to love about that? This Turkey Day was one for the ages, as the Yeoju magic made yet another appearance, and provided Cass and I with a holiday that will be thought of highly for many years to come. That being said, I woke up the next day, and true to the dubbed, ‘Black Friday,’ I was ... read more

There are so, so many things one goes through, experiences, notices, accepts, and learns while doing something along the lines of travel and working abroad. Big things, little differences, and subtleties along the journey are the spices that put so much value into the experience. I realize that here, in Korea, most of those spices have to do with kimchi or that potent red pepper paste I love, but it’s those along with so much more that have moved me to share some of Korean life’s little pleasures. I love love; so I will share these things. Please enjoy the sometimes fun, sometimes silly, sometimes interesting, sometimes outlandish observations. I will leave this entry simply as a conglomeration of these random thoughts, because nearly all of them pass through my mind during the course of a ... read more
