Before coming to Korea, we couldn’t find any information on the designated town we were to call home for the next year. Literally, the only two solid bits of information, if you can call them that, in which we knew for sure was that Yeoju is the home for some kind of world ceramic festival and there is a premium outlet shopping mall in town. You could say we were going in pretty blind, but in the end, it was an absolute blessing. Before I get into Yeoju a little, we’re currently enroute to Japan, the final leg of our Asian experience. Those blogs are coming right up, sorry I’m a little behind on the writing- been a little busy. We officially have left Korea, Yeoju, our jobs, and friends which was all quite sad. As ... read more

It’s no secret, Korean food is a love/hate relationship. It never really allows any room for indifference; definitely one or the other… or both… or neither. For Cass and I, it’s both, but more along the lines of love, and I’m not too proud to say so. We’ve actually evolved to be somewhat of connoisseurs of the cuisine this last year, and it has been a wild ride. Anyone interested, I invite you to read an article I got published for more insight into our forays into the realm of Korean food, here’s the url=http://www.bootsnall.com/articles/09-06/eating-in-korea-a-laymans-guide-to-dishes-you-must-try.html link, or head over to TheExpeditioner and the post I put up about the nastiness people eat all over the world. It’s all kind of amusing, I think. Since this is the blog-abration of all ... read more

Count down is now under twenty days until we shove off from the Hermit Kingdom, and it’s starting to hit us that we’re actually leaving. We are leaving Korea on October 5th, officially, and spending a week in Japan, exploring Tokyo and down through Kyoto and beyond (if we have time). Then on the 10th, we will be jumping back on a plane to head back to the western hemisphere, changing planes in Seattle and then to Bozeman. Neither of us can really believe that we are leaving sooo soon! There are all kinds of things creeping up on us, and we’re staying ahead of the curve, but the stresses of it all are still on the back burner. Not only are there a million and one things to do for our schools, end of contract ... read more

So we’re back, another awesome vacation abroad finished, and we had a pleasant surprise waiting on our phone when we arrived at the airport… more vacation! Yes, while we were gone, the Korean ministry of education issued a mandatory one week quarantine for any teachers that traveled out of the country, a precaution for the H1N1 flu virus. Since we arrived the night before we were to go back to school, (and are totally healthy) that means we had one more week vacation… yippee! What we didn’t realize, was that we weren’t the only ones on quarantine, the majority of the teachers in town were in the same boat! Without giving us any direction, or further instructions regarding how to behave on quarantine (other than don’t go to school) we all used the time to do ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong September 3rd 2009

The greatest city on earth & Asia’s Las Vegas… What’s not to love about these two, right? After a day of bumming that included the famous ‘water puppet show,’ we left the friendly confines of Hanoi for the modern marvel that is the existence of Hong Kong. We had almost 3 days there to check out all we could, not enough to discover all of the wonders our friend Laurel had so graciously offered, but enough to give us the vibe of city life that should suffice for, basically, all of eternity. We got into HK in the middle of the night after a delay in Hanoi. Fortunately, this place wasn’t the sleepy little burg we’d find in Montana. We had to do all kinds of wandering around to find the guest house, 11 floors up ... read more

Before we took off for the urban jungle of Hong Kong, we felt it necessary to get the most out of Hanoi that we still could, since we’ve both grown quite fond of the minimally organized chaos, cluttered beauty, and labyrinth-esque streets of the Old Quarter (the heart of downtown Hanoi). It was raining as we arrived on the train from Sapa, and welcomed with open arms, yet again, to the hostel we stayed at over a week ago. The girls at the Hanoi Guesthouse are so amazing, becoming fast friends with Cass… “Cassie, you think everything, ‘sooooo good!’” There we grabbed a shower, another free breakfast, and a complementary umbrella (really? Could they have been any nicer?), before we hit the streets for our remaining 8 hours in the city. Bumming, breakfast, and some last ... read more

A quick turn-around, literally like 4 hours in Hanoi showering at the guesthouse we weren’t even staying in that night (how nice of them!), and we were right back in a taxi heading to the train station for an overnighter to a small village in one of the farthest reaches of the country, Sapa. We had two days planned sandwiched in between to overnight train rides- really looking forward to sleeping on a rickety old train through the mountains of northern Vietnam. Regardless, we’ve been told it would be more beautiful than Halong Bay, which is a tall order, but in the end, seemed to deliver in the form of beautiful landscapes with huge terraced mountains and beautiful indigenous people “selling” their handmade crafts. We headed to the train station after meeting a wonderful couple at ... read more

We knew before getting to Vietnam, this place was absolutely breathtaking, but when you actually are immersed in the beauty in all directions, it is hard to put into words. Halong Bay is about 160 kilometers east of Hanoi and home to more than 2,000 Dr. Seussian shaped islands. We spent three days and two nights in the bay that could possibly be voted as one of the new ‘7 Wonders of the Natural World,’ and it sure has my vote. The trip started with a three hour drive to the bay with some interesting commentary on the Vietnamese culture from our guide, Ahn (procounced like aim, but ending with an N). This was one of the first times that we truly felt like we were on a tourist trail, rather than a travelers route. We ... read more

Well, more like Crazy (pause) Beautiful. Yeah, we made it… so... Happy (well deserved) Summer Vacation everyone (fist pump), and Gooooood Moooorning Viet... no, that’s just too cheesy, even for me! But seriously, It really feels great finally getting our well manicured plans underway when starting an extended trip like this. Not only have we been looking forward to this because of the marathon school calendar we just finished, but for us, being American citizens, we have a history with this country. It certainly isn’t, but is growing rapidly, the backpacker’s destination that Thailand is; it doesn’t boast the grand Angor Wat temples that Cambodia has, and isn’t the unspoiled off-the-beaten-track destination Laos is, either. Vietnam lies as the big spoon of SE Asia, cuddling these other three countries in what seems to be a ‘hiding ... read more

Jeju Island, Korea Honeymooners Island… Korea’s Hawaii… A Tropical Paradise… “Very Famous in Korea.” All those adjectives, and more have been used to describe Jeju no matter who or when it has come up in conversation since we’ve been here. Obviously curious to see what this tropical utopia is all about, my friend Tom and I, decided to take advantage of some time off of school to down to this island off the southern coast of Korea. We spent four days there, slogging through the misty remnants of the typhoon that has caused so much destruction to Taiwan and China. Somewhere along the journey, we realized that just about hit all modes of transportation possible, so, keeping in the theme of the trip (which is always a must) I’ll keep track here. 1 Bus, 1 Ferry ... read more
