What a day - we were headed for Intra, about 4 towns away in Verbania, for a local sim card because although the internet told me that there was a Vodaphone store at Malpensa/Milan airport, there seemed not to be, or perhaps it was in the Arrivals section. Unfortunately we got off the bus too early, so we tried the local tobacci shop (where you buy bus tickets, and phone recharges) but alas no micro sims for an iPhone! They sent us up the hill to the information centre, where we found a very nice Italian lady with good English who said, no, you could buy that at Stresa (where we had come from). So we said, can you give us there number and we will call and check first, so we don't go back then ... read more

Wed/Thursday – the start of 3 nights at Lake Maggiore Thanks for all your comments, we enjoyed reading them finally. After nearly missing out flight to Milan, even though we were at the airport 2 & ¾ hours before the flight time, somehow we were sitting one gate next to the one written on our boarding pass, and didn’t realise that the boarding gate had also been changed down one number, and we were lined up to board a flight to Hamburg at 9.05 which was the time our flight was due to leave. Lucky for us our boarding passes didn’t make the right noise and we could make a dash to the right gate where the flight was running a little late and there were still 2 people lined up to board! Just in ... read more

Oh my god, I could have cried today! We got to the Louvre for the first stop on our day of art, only to find it is closed on Tuesdays. Most galleries/museums in Europe close on Mondays, so we have planned our days around this. The only saving grace was that we were only a metro stop or two from the jeweler on the Rue de la Paix that we visited yesterday, Isabelle Langlois, so we made a trip back to have a look at a ring that was at an exhibition yesterday, so we were not able to see it in the shop, but they had promised it would be back today. I didn’t buy that ring, but found another beauty, and conned John into the purchase. This jeweler is an artist after my own ... read more

Today we enjoyed a morning at the Luxemburg Jardin (gardens) a most glorious spot for Parisians to take in the sunshine. Much like botanic gardens in Australia, but many more chairs for all to enjoy. Every time I hear a police siren, I feel in the middle of the Bourne Identity – that Ei Or Ei Or noise of the European sirens is very different to home. These crazy Parisian drivers, we had wondered yesterday how they get their cars in and out of tight parking spots, but today we saw first hand. You reverse until you hit the car behind, then you go forward till you hit the car in front, then you repeat this 5 times until you are suitably angled to get onto the street. They are not even perturbed if you stand ... read more

Our first day in Paris, we arrived exhausted at 6.40am local time (very obscene) as you are desperate for a shower and change of clothes before setting out exploring. Luckily our hotel thought they might have a room for us by about 10am, so we headed out to explore close to the hotel. Mark and another friend had referred us to the Hotel Du Pantheon, which is a fantastic hotel overlooking the Pantheon (photos below), and we have a lovely french provincial furnished room and an amazing view of the Pantheon. Quick surprisingly we have experienced a lack of gypsies that we remember from our first trip to Italy. There are many tourists with bags just asking for a hand to slip in and remove valuables, but there just haven't seemed to be the same concerns ... read more
