Geo: 21.2647, -157.785I made a last visit to the beach a street away from where we were staying this morning. It was high tide again so the beach had mostly disappeared, but there were a few people swimming and one man snorkelling there. I don't think the snorkelling would have been any good as the reef was a long way out into the sea but I guess turtles may have appeared there.I took a few last photos then we were off to the airport again for the long trip back to Perth. We were lucky this time and the plane is not full so we have a couple of seats each to ourselves. The flight attendant has just given me a glass of French champagne and a bottle of sav Blanc so that should make the journey go ... read more

Geo: 21.2647, -157.785Last day on Oahu today and we woke to rain again, but decided to go check out the northern beaches. We headed out on the freeway and it started to fine up so we stopped off at the outlet stores to see what sort of sales they had on. It was all the usual designer stores and they were all advertising 40 to 50% off which would have been useful if we had needed any designer gear.Ross managed to get a couple of pairs of chinos but we couldn't find anything else to waste our money on.People started arriving by the bus load from Waikiki so off we went to see the beaches. You could see the back of the mountains that we rode through yesterday but you couldn't get anywhere near them because of the ... read more

Geo: 21.2646, -157.785It was raining this morning when we got up which was a bit disappointing as it was supposed to be fine all this week after they had awful weather last week due to a tropical storm that had caused some flooding in the area.We set off anyway for Dillingham field for Ross' flight in the biplane. When we got there the pilot, Bruce was just landing in his Waco biplane after taking a couple for a ride. He ended up talking us into going in that plane which allows for two people to sit side by side in the front, albeit rather squashed up.Off we went over the route that took us over where the Japanese had gone during the attack on Pearl Harbour. It was very windy in the open cockpit which made ... read more

Geo: 21.2647, -157.785It is a fine day today so we set off to see the leeward side of the island. We passed a few beaches and the rocky coastline. There were some crazy people fishing off the rocks with waves crashing around them which reminded me of Albany, where a King wave is likely to be your demise. After going along the coast we turned back up towards the mountains and stopped at a lookout which looked towards Koko mountain where there is a ridiculously steep pathway leading to the top of the grassy hill. We could see people traversing their way up and imagined that the view from the top would be rather good but you would want to take a lot of water with you. Some of the viewpoints we stopped at were crowded with tourists ... read more

Geo: 21.2646, -157.785Rising at 6.00am this morning we headed to Pearl Harbour to visit the Arizona memorial and see the battleship Missouri and the aircraft museum. We thought you had to get there by 7.00 am to get one of the tickets to the memorial as they take you out there by small ferry and there is a limited number of people allowed to go each day. When we got there just after 7.00 there was a long line waiting to get in and while we were standing in line I heard a young woman say that people got there early because the first 1300 tickets were free. So it wasn't the limited number, it was just that you got a free ride! Anyway we got through and got our tickets for the ferry which wasn't to go ... read more

Geo: 22.2241, -159.492Tomorrow we have to leave Kauai to spend a few days in Honolulu. I think the crowds there will be a bit of a shock to the system after the laid back vibe of here and the big island but it will be interesting to see where they filmed 'Lost' and check out the madness that is Waikiki. We went to Hanalei bay this morning and I picked up a T-shirt as a souvenir, then we went back to the light house which is a bird sanctuary as well and watched the red footed boobys and the majestic black terns soaring along the cliff face in the stiff breeze. There was a Monk seal lying on the rocks beneath the cliff but you could only really spot him with the binoculars.Hiding in the bushes around the ... read more

Geo: 22.2242, -159.492We had an energetic day today and began by trying to get a parking spot at the end of the Princeville road to get a look at the beach there. No joy on that one as it was chock a block again. I think you need to get there at the crack of dawn to get one of the limited parking spaces.Since most of the beaches along the road looked a bit rough due to the increased swell of the past few days we ventured on to Anini beach, which incidentally is only a few kms from where we are staying. The drive there from the main road held vistas of rather expensive looking homes on beautiful green acreage and when we got to the beach it was much calmer than the coast here.It ... read more

Geo: 22.2243, -159.492The rain held off last night for a change and it was relatively clear this morning. It did rain a bit on the way to the airfield but had stopped by the time we got there. There was us and another Australian family with 2 young boys on our chopper and our pilot, Trevor, who looked like a young Brendon Fevola. Unlike Brendon, he was able to fly the helicopter and was actually the son of the chief helicopter pilot for the island, and had been born on Kauai. We haven't really run into any other Aussies on this trip so it was quite a surprise to see the family on our flight. They were from Sydney and remarked that they had run into a lot of Australians, so they must have been going to different ... read more

Geo: 22.2242, -159.492Today we drove to the town of Poipu which is on the southern side of the island. It is a pretty little town and has lots of resort condos fronting the ocean and the usual half a dozen golf courses looking towards the mountains. We checked out the beaches and then went to view the 'Spouting horn' which is a blowhole at the base of the rocky cliffs. It was throwing up a bit of spray due to the medium sized waves but wasn't terribly spectacular. I can imagine it would be good in a large swell though.Haven't seen most of Poipu we went in search of a restaurant that we had seen advertised on the back of a magazine. The specialty of this place was called Hula pie and is an amazing dessert consisting ... read more

Geo: 22.2242, -159.492We had a lazy day today. I was going to go snorkelling in the bay below our condos but after all the rain last night the steep pathway was muddy and slippery and it looked a bit rough in the water so we decided to go on to Hanalei bay and check out the snorkelling there.Last night we had gone to dinner at a restaurant in the little shopping district in front of the bay. Most of the shops were shut but we found a nice pub type restaurant which looked out to the mountains. The fish and prawns in a coconut and pineapple sauce that I had was delicious and Ross enjoyed his fish and ribs dish. The rum and fruit juice cocktail that I had was even better! The weather was not great today and ... read more
